| Morning run with Bishane. Out to the water tower and past, turned around at the 1 1/4 mark by the golfcourse. A little speedier than an easy run, but this was actually probably brutally slow for him, so I think I did a decent job reigning in the speed.
I didn't realize that they had the "Warrior Run" this morning instead of tomorrow, so we ran right by my entire squadron all getting ready to run. Whoops. As a grad, it shouldn't be a big deal that I wasn't there, but I still love the fact that I ran right by the commander as he arrived and he just smiled and waved as I headed home. Ha.

| A little tight from all this non-easy running.
I spent my stretching time trying to convince myself that I really am leaving for Senegal in two days. So far I haven't really believed it. So my next thought was about how messy my room had gotten and how I better hurry up and clean up before I leave. I hate getting home to a mess.

| Balmy evening, about 80F, strong southerly wind. Ran two miles really easy to the water town and past (into the wind) then three miles tempo, one mile cool down. Felt pretty good today, had a lot it me.
I meant to run at 2 or so, but (good) stuff kept coming up so I didn't get out the door until 9:30. (!) And that was right after making running plans with someone for 7 tomorrow morning. Really smart.

| Went to Comanche Lookout Park to run up the hill - the fourth highest point in Bexar County (as I'm sure I've written before). Takes about 90 seconds... Warmed up for about 10 minutes, then ran the hill 4 times, and finished up 4 miles from there. Didn't work so well as far as finding my max. Couldn't get over 195, and the last one I only hit 193. Don't think it was a good day to try it (legs felt dead, couldn't push hard, despite the rest yesterday) and maybe I need to reevaluate my procedures. Good hill workout, though. Legs were toast afterwards. Obviously I need to run more hills. | ||

| At Mac with Becky and Scott. Becky needed to do 4 miles so I lead them around the maze for 4 and then pointed them towards the car and did 2 miles hard (tempo-ish) with a mile easy to cool down. Felt good. No pain, felt really fresh at the end of the run. Cloudy and a bit breezy today. | ||

| From just before the 5 mile marker to just past the 1 mile marker. (Directly between the two is not two miles because there's a little dogleg that I don't run that goes to the parking at the start/finish of the trail.) Felt good. This is faster than what I want to run at the Prickly Pear this year, so it was good to feel like I can go that fast on these trails. | ||
| Strength/Core (stretching) 6:00 [1] | ||
| Quick stretch, we were eager to get to quiznos. | ||
| Note | ||
| Today during our run, Scott was continually bewildered at my HR values. He seems to think that we have similar max HRs (somewhere just over 200), but says that he's working wicked hard in the 180s, and puking in the 190s. Obviously not my experiences. So I want to do a max HR test sometime this week. Maybe it's really 230 or something and I'm continually running way below my potential. ;-)
Anyone have any suggestions on a good max HR test? How rested should I be?

| Easy run at McAlister. Ran on the cooler half of the loop, with an extension in the skinny northern part at the end. It's really disorienting up there. Teensy weensy bit of bothersomeness again on the right hip. Saw 34 deer, with no less than 25 of them all in one tiny little field. It's a good thing deer don't attack. Yikes. Also, 2 cardinals and three unleashed dogs (grrrr)...and I smelled one skunk and could swear I heard one dillo.
Meant to run earlier and go to Gov't Canyon, but on a whim I spent a few hours picking out something to drop a paycheck on as a snazzy birthday present for myself. It's beautiful, and its companion is very nice, too. Major ego boosts (like I need those) when a) the salesdude asked if I played anywhere (!) b) the entire sales staff gathered around to watch me play and c) I was invited to play tomorrow at a jam session down the road. Chizz.

| Early morning birthday run in Pensacola before heading out. I would say that it was a beautiful morning (of course, just for me), but that would be a lie. It was beautiful to look at from inside my room, but outside it was quite chilly. Upper 30's (! in Florida! Spring Break week!) with quite a nice biting wind. Had I checked the temps before heading out the door I may not have headed out. I didn't bring anything except shorts and skimpy running tops. Luckily, except for my hands getting numb, it didn't really seem *that* cold.
Run felt good. Realized that my drivers license expires today. Whoops. My dad had been incessantly reminding me to get the extension for "temporary" out-of-staters and I kept forgetting.

| Beautiful day today, and a really nice run. Same route as yesterday, but more energy (and a little quicker on the way back). Outside right hip a little buggy, but that's no big deal, I know how to silence that. Wha-pow!
The morning out by/in the water was pretty draining. Tomorrow we're spending the whole day on/in the water (gettin' paid to go parasailing, baby), so I imagine I'll be beat. Good timing for a shorter run tomorrow. Or maybe even just hitting the gym (blergh).

| HuMiD! Yuck. Found the Real" woodchip trail today. Now I know what everyone was raving about - it's really nice, and goes for many miles, exactly along the route I was going to run on the road. Wonder why more places don't have them. Perfect for a quick local run.
Took a little over 10 minutes each way there and back. I about died at the 20 min mark, so I get a 3 today for pushing through for another 40 minutes. Not sure what happened. Humidity definitely not cool, plus maybe I was going a bit faster than I realized for those first 20 minutes. Legs felt decent today (better than yesterday), the problem was energy level. Do old people have that problem, too?

| Exploratory run around NAS Pensacola. Started with the woodchip trail (too short) and headed down to the beach, then investigated my dinner options (not so hot). Legs feel way less than stellar. It probably would have helped to have had a good warmup and cooldown for my PFT on Friday. I wasn't running 100%, but it was still pretty hard running, with no stretching afterwards. Lesson learned.
NASP seems to be recovering pretty well from Ivan, though the building I'm in still has no roof. It's funny that Navy people make everything on land resemble being on a ship. As if months at sea weren't enough. Weirdos.

| Knee hurt on and off throughout the day yesterday. No running today. Off to Pensacola tomorrow for the week, try to do regular light running there.
On another note, I just realized that yesterday's PFT was pretty significant in that I'd never before even run a mile in under 7 minutes. So running 1.5 at under 7 pace is a good milestone to check off. I wonder how soon before I can do 3 miles that fast... Edited later to add: Whoops, guess I ran a 6:49 mile, just for fun, back in Oct. So much for milestones.

| Spent almost three hours hiking at Gov't Canyon with Melissa. It was also secretly a scouting mission to see if the place would be good for orienteering. Verdict: probably not. Almost no runnable woods - it's thick. Plus, seems unlikely that they'd be keen on having people off trail and running around. Oh well, 8,000+ urban acres... | ||

| Moe's Better Half Marathon, San Marcos, TX.
Overall positive experience today. Ate too soon before the start (10 or 15 minutes) and had mild stitches most of the course. Which was, by the way, hillier than I expected. I knew I was going to really have to make sure not to start too fast because it was pretty humid, which is just not good news for me. This is where I ask myself if there actually are any advantages to Texas. It is, apparently, not at all flat, even where you think it is, and it's only humid on race days. I didn't take good splits, though I know about what I ran for each mile, or at least every pair. I kept up just about perfectly steady 8:45 pace for the first 10 miles (with one measurably quicker and one a bit slower). The course was gently rolling with one "killer hill" at mile 3.5. I took it easy through that hill, thinking that it would be a piece of cake after that, only to be greeted with a not-quite killer magnitude headwind on the other side. This is beginning to sound like the stories of having to walk to school uphill both ways... but it's true! The next three miles were into the wind, and I remembered my promise from Monday to back off if I had the wind. And I did! And I think it was just right. The rest of the course was cross or tailwind, so I didn't have to think about it again (and maybe it even helped me out a bit). Ate a blok and walked through the water stops every 2 miles. At mile 10 I felt much better than I did at that point in my previous half marathons and was on pace for 1:54, which was fine with me. At this point my left knee was screaming at me (why don't I listen to myself and stop running on the road so much?), but I still felt like I was cranking a pretty good pace into the finish. Nope, apparently I was running slow 9's, and thus came in at 1:56. It was good enough for third in my age group (of 13. 16/94 overall female), which was a nice surprise. The awards came in boxes that looked like pizza boxes. Which made me smile and crave pizza... mmm...pizza. I'm pleased with how I "raced" the course, controlling my pace based on how I felt rather than trying to run the pace that I had planned on. Pushing for that pace probably would have been disastrous at any point during the run. New neighbor Peter was just ahead of me for the first 8 or 9 miles and ended up pulling away, much to my surprise. My legs were pretty stiff at the finish, but rather than stretch I got a 20 minute massage. My legs feel great (except for the knee, of course). I really think those 20 minutes were way more effective than any stretching I could have done. Today was fun, but no more signing up for half marathons on a whim. I'll feel better if I actually train for one and run it with a good, solid plan and preparation.
| Other Cardio (kayaking) 1:00:00 [1] | ||
| Kayaking in a double with Melissa - Town Lake, Austin. Mmmm, Texas' land of milk and honey. This was hard work, muscularly. I'll probably be more sore from this than from the run tomorrow. | ||
| Note | ||
| This has nothing to do with training or racing, but I was so thrilled (just ask Seabass) and my mood was affected so positively that I had to note it.
After the race Melissa and I headed up to Austin for lunch with Jeff and Aim. Ate Cuban food and, just as we were finishing up a pair of guys came in (the only other people there) and I instantly recognized Markos of DailyKos.com fame, and co-author Jerome Armstrong of MyDD.com. I was one of the 2000 people crazy enough to pre-order the special "progressive partner edition" of their book Crashing the Gate. So, being a big fan, on the way out I stopped by their table and said, "I've got a copy of your book sitting on my night table!" and they were thrilled and we chatted for 10 or 15 minutes about various subjects. It was great! I'm kicking myself now for not thinking to have my picture taken with them. Or at least getting them to sign my bra. Maybe next time.

| Resting up for tomorrow. Rest meant going to the Riverwalk for lunch with Melissa and Becky, which meant eating a lot of food (good) and getting a lot of sun (bad). Hot day in San Antonio (low 90s). Fell asleep instead of eating dinner (not so hot). | ||

| Really nice morning. Ran to and from the squadron run (3 miles r/t) at a really easy pace. Figured the squadron run would be easy, too since it was supposed to be in formation today (which usually means 11 or 12+ min/mi). But the scraggly group of grads doesn't really make up a flight, so we just started as the very last group and the commander was like, "see alpha flight way down there? go get 'em!" And he was kidding, but Sean and I just kind of kept a good pace going and passed them all anyway, catching the lead flight just before the end of the 2.4 mile loop.
I stayed easily "conversational" the whole time (literally, since we were actually talking) and was surprised by the high HR. At one point while chatting I checked my watch and saw 195. Seemed to stay in the low 190s for most of the loop. But it felt pretty easy. Either conversational != easy, or this HR stuff is too complicated for me.

| Good stretch, probably the first of a several over the next two days. Also threw in a couple sets of pushups and crunches. Gawd I hate pushups. I was hoping that all the gym lifting would keep me well prepared for my PFT, but I dunno if I'll be able to max out the pushup score... especially if they're picky on form. Need 41 in one minute. Yikes! | ||

Rode around the east loop. Really flew around the south side of the runway, and then instantly slowed to a hideous crawling pace on the east side, into the wall of wind. It was so strong that even the T-38s were having trouble. Really!

| Went over to Comanche Lookout Park in the middle of the day for an easy but "hilly" run. About 81F and sunny, but I think I'm fine with warm now. I also think that the park is bigger than it was the last time I was there. I learned that the lookout hill is the fourth highest point in Bexar County, which says a lot about how flat this place is. Made two trips up to the tower, covered basically all the developed trails. Legs were tired, but not dead or sore.
Saw several extremely large flying insects, 2 really skinny deer, and smelled one skunk. The plants must think spring is here, because several members of the Agavaceae family have already "got the urge", as my palynology professor used to say.

| Ran three tempo miles at my planned pace for this Sunday's half. Supposed to be 8:20 min/mi. Legs felt heavy. Killer south wind today, so a strong headwind on the first mile, cross for the second, and tail for the return. I think pushing hard into the wind wore me out a bit for the return. Splits:
8:16, 8:05, 8:24 Pushed hard on the first two, stitch on the last one probably served to slow me down. It didn't feel easy but it's hard to tell if it was too fast. I should feel fresher on Sunday, and the first two were a little too quick. But I still felt that I could go quite a bit further at that pace. I dunno about 13 miles. There's always the race day adrenaline to help, but I guess I'll just have to see how I feel on Sunday. I should note that my watch ticked off exactly 1.0 for each of the three marked miles. How convenient!

| Red course at the QOC Greenbelt meet: DNF. Last night I neither took advantage of the intoxicating beverages at the open bar, nor was I struck by lightening upon entering the church, so I really have no excuse for my poor brain activity levels today.
Felt okay as I got going on the course, sort of not concentrating well but making it okay and moving pretty quickly on 1-6. Control 7 was one of those ones that I tend to approach kind of broadly - it was sort of ambiguously placed near the end of a spur, so I just ran to the spur, aiming a little right, with the intention of running down it to the control. It was a narrow spur, so it's not like I'd miss it. What I didn't count on was the wall of brambles and overall thicketness. Ended up wandering around swearing at the vegetation and then attempting to re-attack from a trail a long way away (~300m?), but I kind of curved off to the next (very broad) spur. Saw a control in a ditch, which I knew wasn't mine, but I also knew it had to be on a mapped feature. Took me a minute or so to figure out which one (I was further away than I thought) and then approached the control successfully from that direction. When I got there I saw that I had only been about 20m away from it the first time, just on the wrong side of a particularly nasty thicket. I lost well over 20 minutes on this control, the kind of mistake I haven't made in a long time. And I can't really blame the map or the course setter, despite the deceptive light green on the map. Obviously at this point I wasn't really enjoying myself, and the thickness of the woods didn't help. But I calmed myself down and kept going, figuring I could leave that mistake behind and finish the course strong. And then I left the control in totally the wrong direction. Once I realized it I was fine. And then just wasn't reading the map on the way to number 9. My brain just wasn't in to orienteering today. At this point I was as far from the finish as I could be, and with the way things were going I didn't think I could finish the course and easily make my flight. Nor did I think it would be beneficial to try. I just wasn't having fun. So I jogged it in on the trails and used the 25 minutes or so that that took to calm down and stop swearing and think happy thoughts. It worked, I think, since I didn't punch or kick anything at the finish and managed to smile. On the one hand, I have noticed a recent huge increase in my confidence to navigate near the line. On the other, I still feel like I suck. I need some positive O experiences soon to help keep my motivation up. Oh, and just to round out the weekend, I was bit by a dog yesterday after all. Figures.

| Nice and easy morning run in Bal'more with Melissa at Wyman Park. Must be nice to have some dirt so close to home, though I can see not wanting to run there alone so much. Mid-30s and breezy, but sunny, so it was okay that I only brought shorts. Lots of unleashed dogs, but not a single one bit me! Not even a lick or a sniff! Maybe I have somehow made myself less attractive to dogs.
Ditching the post-wedding brunch tomorrow, so rest and O on the agenda (as long as Seabass stays away from the open bar tonight!)

| Note | ||
| This should have been a log entry for some road riding, but my attempt was thwarted by my own forgetfulness. Turns out I left my nice pump in my bike locker in LR. Backup (frame) pump broken. I'll probably buy a new pump after the weekend trip to the East coast. (They found it, but I'm just having a friend take it, can't imagine it's worth shipping.) In the meantime just another chance to wear spandex in public... wasted.
Two more notes: 1) I feel like I'm starting to get sick again. This is getting old. 2) I'm not going to Pensacola til the 20th, so I went ahead and signed up for Moe's Better Half Marathon next Sunday. I obviously haven't been training specifically for this kind of event, but I've been itching to a half for a while now. So I'll "race" it, but with milder expectations that I would otherwise. I think 1:50 is a reasonable goal. (I think I'd have been training for closer to a 1:45 goal were I focusing on a road half.)

Late night easy run, same as I would have done had I ridden. Felt good. Water tower and back. Slightly faster on the return, last few minutes were creeping into "3" range. Actually, I'm lying. It didn't feel good, it felt really good, because I could tell that I was running significantly quicker than I used to for this loop, but it still felt really easy. And that's with not fully fresh legs. I guess that's called "progress". I won't be slow forever!

| Another 85F day, so I waited for dark. Ran easyish to the golf course, with 5x1 min surges in the middle, finishing at the gym.
I forgot how flippin' flat this place is. That's not cool. Plus, there's no way my legs are going to let me run on the pavement like this every day. I'm going to be doing a bit of driving. I'll have to reinvestigate the couple (tiny) parks nearby. I'd rather drive and have to do 4 or 5 loops on dirt with some climb than step out the door for flat pavement.
