Orienteering 1:01:00 [3] ***
8c slept:7.0 shoes: Asics Trail
Popped over to Cienega Canyon to retrieve some controls from Sunday's mini-rogaine. Since I was only doing a handful, and since I had "rest" time at each control as I untied them, I could move faster than on Sunday. So I used the time to practice reading on the run. Really nice afternoon, but getting a bit chilly up near ~8000 ft.

I've been contemplating getting a wrist/thumb compass, because when I started using a thumb compass I found it hard to "thumb" the map. So I ran a leg without a compass and found, much to my surprise, that my thumb is much bigger than the tip of my compass. I guess in the past couple of years I have learned well enough how to "thumb" with the tip of the compass, enough so that it's more precise than my thumb. Doesn't seem like I'm that good at keeping my place, but I guess I've gotten much better at it.

Also confirmed my suspicions about the (mis)placement of two of the controls. Two out of a gazillion isn't a disaster.

This weekend's BAOC event is possibly my last big O meet of the year. I'll have to come up with some super motivational goal to bring out the pUre aNiMAl EnErGY!!!! Yaaar!

Cycling (road) 38:00 [1] 9.0 mi (4:12 / mi)
slept:10.0
A failed attempt at trying to ride to and from base. Had a few little issues on the way down, including a non-cooperative front derailleur and some dude yelling, "Get a car!!" at me as he sped by at a particularly hairy intersection. I resisted the temptation to flip him off only because I didn't want to stoop to his level. But really I just wanted to kick the shit out of him.

The real problem was that I was not smart enough to bring a pump or spare tube or patch kit or anything with me. Ever since I started riding with these armadillo tires I just take a bike tool and a cell phone. Two flats in 3 or 4 years will help instill bad habits like that. So I got a flat about 2 miles onto the Rio Grande bike trail and had to call Jen to pick me up at the parking lot, which meant walking the bike trail back to the road. Some nice guy stopped to give me some air and I made it about a half mile on the bike before having to get off again. No big deal, but I was looking forward to the ride back up to the house. Hills!

I think this was nature's subtle way of telling me that I haven't been careful lately. Going out to the Sandias for a several hour jaunt - alone and without telling anyone where I'm going - is not a good idea, especially as winter approaches. Getting stuck on a bike path with a flat is a very benign warning. I'll be a little more careful in the future about the mountains (and take bike supplies when I ride, too).

Hamstrings (esp. right) sore from yesterday, as well as my upper back for some reason. Also feel constantly dehydrated or on the edge of sick. Maybe it was a good thing that I didn't ride for 3 hours.

4-hour mini-rogaine at Doc Long on the east side of the Sandias. Nice map (a Tatyana product), though in need of some minor updates, really pretty nice area, though it seemed steep. Not sure if that's because I made silly route choices and climbed more than I had to in steep places, or because of the altitude or whether it really is steep.

Pretty decent accuracy for all but a few controls, but I wasn't moving very fast. I figured, with four hours, what's the rush? I ran on trails and when it wasn't steep or too rocky and nasty to run. After about 2.5 hours I started making silly decisions. But I did make a good move at the end - I passed through the finish with less than 15 minutes left, dropped my camelback and raced out for three more 30-point controls. Got back 2 minutes late for a 2 point penalty, for a 28-point net gain.

Did pretty well, the only people who beat me were dudes named Morten or Jan, so that's a respectable showing.

Had lunch afterward with a very nice crew of NMO people. It was great! And they're not weird!

Strength/Core (climbing) 20:00 [3]
Okay, here we go. Snuck off to the climbing gym during lunch for some quick work - 30 mins bouldering. I'm pretty sure most of that time was spent actually on the wall (or falling off the wall, or getting up off the crash pads) and not just standing there looking at the ridiculous routes that have been set. A little sore from yesterday, and now my upper body is quite fatigued from today. *Much* better than lifting at the gym!

Went to the track after class for light-hearted intervals. Not sure if the altitude here is a significant factor, and it was hard to tell if it was harder than it should be because there was a nice, steady ~25 mph wind. I guess going in circles is a good way to deal with wind. Did 200H, 200E, 400H, 400E, 800H, 400E, 400H, 400E, 200H, 200E, with 1 mile warm up and cool down. Splits for hard:

52, 1:44, 3:35, 1:45, 50
Swimming 15:00 [1]
In the category of "little things that make Cristina giddy", this base not only has a climbing gym and a track, but also an indoor pool... that just so happens to be right next to the track. I'm a sucker for convenience, so in I went! Just wanted to get in the water, so it was a quick swim. Something around 700m (I lost track), mostly just ez, some pulling.
C • Giddy?! 13

Note
Still wildly sore. Hit the climbing gym on base (!) and went ahead and got the wildly cheap membership. I have to do *something* that involves the rest of my body, and this is the most fun solution. But I'm not sure that I can bring myself to log it.

Note
Okay, I was walking really funny today. My quads are like jelly. And I thought Sunday's "little hike" would be a piece of cake. Anyway, no running today. Or other activity. First day of class, getting things spun up. Should be a good time. Except, unfortunately, my commute... which is bloody long. I don't know how people handle trafficky commutes. Making tentative plans to try to ride one-way four days a week. Ish. We'll see. It's a long way.

Trail run from the Indian School trailhead with the Albuquerque road running crew. Awesome. Really neat little trails along the foothills, and good group of strong runners. They push a good pace but stop to wait every once and a while. There was one guy who was always bringing up the rear, which means that I can try to keep up with the front crowd because I get little rests. My legs were toast from yesterday, and I had some nice quad-quivering moments. This'll be a great thing to do regularly. They're doing mile repeats tomorrow, but I don't think my legs will be up for it.

Went to base today to scope out the recreational opportunities. Crikey, quite a lot going on at outdoor rec. Good times ahead.

Hiked up the Pino Trail up the W side of the Sandias. Hadn't actually planned to do the whole thing because I didn't think I'd make it back before sunset. Decided to push it and try anyway. Good workout, couldn't have moved faster even if I'd tried to "run" it - HR often around 180. It's a nice trail, pretty sweet views and it ends in a saddle on the top of the Sandias where it crosses the Sandia Crest Trail and leads to the Cienega Trail. I think the Cienega Trail leads right to where the NMO mini-rogaine is next weekend.

Starts at about 6400' and ends at about 9200', which is pretty chilly in the evening. Took a map and followed along, which ended up being very useful when I was decided whether to go all the way up or not. I thought I had a lot more to go based on my watch (I started it at the FS boundary rather than the initial trailhead), but looked pretty doable on the map. And it was.

Saw a lot of hikers in the bottom half, and one runner, but not a soul for the top 2 miles, except two ginormous deer.

... then ran back down. Mostly. After about a mile and a half my stomach threw a fit and I had to walk slowly (and make some pit stops), but eventually I was able to run again. Because of the slight delay I didn't get back to the car until after sunset (whoops) but luckily I wasn't locked in the lot!

Cool little trip. I think I'll be doing a lot of hike-ups, run-downs in the Sandias in the future.

Wuhu, running in Albuquerque! Made it in before midnight last night because of an awesome route choice. Unfortunately, in my excitement at crossing the border I seem to have been caught going a bit too fast. Whoops. At least I'm here! TX departure pictures to be posted soon.

Went for a quick run at Pierdas Mercadas Canyon in Petroglyph. Turns out most of the Petroglyph Nat'l Monument areas are gated shut at 5pm. But not this one! Pretty neat little area, basalt escarpment and open desert scrub, with a fantastic view of the valley and Sandia to the East. Saw lots of jackrabbits, but not much else as far as aminals are concerned. Most of the trails are sandy wash deals, so it's all on the slow side. Good workout. Closest trails from Jen & Will's (~8 min drive, bikable), so I'll probably be stopping by regularly. w00t!

Note
Last day! I wish I knew how to express my enthusiasm with something other than exclamation points! Wuhu! (!)

There was a snafu at my final, last, ultimate outprocessing stop, so now I'm stuck here for another couple of hours while they figure it out... so I'm not sure that I'll make the border before dark! It would be a shame not to actually be able to *see* the border as I cross it.

I'd been thinking that my attitude about Texas was very negative and that that's not typical for me. So I thought I'd write a list of the good and bad things about being here (in San Antonio in particular), to have a more realistic perspective.

Bad:
-flat
-covered in concrete
-hot+humid
-lack of activities
-ridiculously large hats
-ridiculously large churches filled with mean people
-ridiculously large... people
-far from everything
-hot+humid

Good:
-Austin

Yep, that about covers it. Guess I was okay all along.

Not quite verklempt yet.

Last run (ever?) at Randolph. Cold front finally made it here, so it was pretty pleasant. To water tower and golf course and back. Felt pretty good, but had to keep it easy because dinner was still digesting. Totally exhausted from three days of packing and outprocessing, finally out of the room today. I didn't quite manage to fit everything *in* the car, but that's what bungee cords are for.

Supposed to leave tomorrow morning, and I'm not stopping until I reach New Mexico. One. More. Night.

"Green" course at Box Canyon, south of Tucson. I'm still feeling sub-par, so I decided against running the blue (my original plan). A few minutes into my jog I didn't think running at all was a good idea and let out a "jeezus!" at the effort. But it go better, I took it easy and it was great! I was never working very hard but continually passing people and made almost no mistakes. (I'm sure I made some, I just can't think of any now.) Of course, the two go hand in hand. So, aside from the massive amounts of grass seed all over me, and the really impressive 3-roll fall towards the end, pretty uneventful.

The terrain is neat, but probably much more enjoyable without the seeds. Mapped mostly as open and rough open, but barely any of it is fast. Good visibility, mostly contour features.

Saw lots of animals - a crowd of about 5 javelina on the road as we drove in; a massive yellow + black spider whose web I almost ran through; and a bunny that scared me as much as I scared it. It also rained while I was out there! I think that's a first for AZ O for me.

Melissa and I went for an afternoon hike at Sabino Canyon. Absolutely gorgeous. It turned into a sunset hike, however, since I hadn't checked the sunset info and Melissa just said, "It's dark at 7." She's right, it is dark at 7. But it's also dark at 6:15, and I planned for a return by 6:30. No big deal, the last part of the trail was wide and flat, but she won't live that down for a bit. Actual time out there was 2 hours, and I think about 1500' climb? (That's a guess.)

Today was awesome. Arizona kicks ass.

Wow, obviously still sick. Ran to the water tower for the "Warrior Run", waited for the gaggles to start, then ran the run and just kept going after the finish all the way home. Cool morning (mid 50s, windy). My flight wore black t-shirts, which means I wore cotton (gasp) and I feel gross and sweaty now. Today was one of those runs where I remembered what it felt like to run before I liked running. You know, when running was really uncomfortable and every mile was a painful accomplishment. I'm so glad it doesn't feel like that every day. Though I'm not sure about O this weekend if I feel like this.

Of course, I can't complain, because today is my last day of work at 19th Air Force and I have only one week left in Texas! Chizz.

Night run, east flightline. Felt awful this morning, but progressively better throughout the day so that by about 2130 I felt good to go! Legs didn't feel great, but it was more like stiff and unused rather than used and tired. Temps mid 70's, not too humid. Felt even less sick after the run.

I noticed something while standing around looking at my HR values. It seems that I can easily change my HR significantly (while standing still) by varying my breathing rate. Not too surprisingly, except it didn't work the way I expected, and the changes were more significant than I expected. Slower, deeper breaths results in a high HR (upper 70s) and quicker, shallower breaths resulted in a lower HR (low 60s). I could come up with some psuedo-scientific sounding hypotheses for this, but since I'm sure someone knows the real answer I won't bother.

Wine-O. Mass start with three loops, first two forked. This was a lot of fun. The terrain was similar to the weekend's, but with bigger features (and 5m contours). The "just for fun" feeling meant that I tried running faster and reading this stuff. Eventually I think I got the hang of it, after I completely blew the first control. Well, that was partially because it was a mass start and I did the stupid not-reading not-following thing. I was in a group of 4 and we ran around wildly until we eventually relocated and found it.

Spent the first loop trying to get ahead of the others. Didn't really drop everyone until midway through the second loop. Started to get some distance in and then totally blew the "go" control of the second loop. I ended up way past the control in the field by the parking lot (with two silly dudes following me! what were they thinking!). By the time I made it back to the right place, the girls I had dropped were all just leaving it. Stuck right behind them for most of the last loop, trying to cut them off with a break through the woods on one of the last controls, which only resulted in just catching them rather than passing. Pulled ahead with one control left and then took the Mother of All Spills. At least, it was probably really cool to watch. Luckily there is a lot of moss and I just sort of slid. But now they were ahead of me again! There were two with a big lead for the final sprint and I pushed as hard as I could - just barely inched ahead of one (about 2m before the final punch... is that rude?) and just behind the other.

It was fun to run fast and actually feel like I was racing head to head. Oh wait, that's what the sprint finals are like, right? I guess I shoud do those next time...

Much better today. Still not very good, but at least I learned something yesterday.

Some route choice today, lots of trail options. I pushed hard on the trails because I was spending a bit of time really, seriously moving slowly in the trickier stuff (rather than half-assedly moving slowly like yesterday). The walking and slow jogging was plenty of recovery. No real problems switching from the hard trail running to the slow tricky stuff. Had plenty of gas left at the end, I don't think I would have had a problem going faster on the trails (either physically or navigationally) but maybe that would have caused me to screwup later. Who knows.

I don't feel like today makes up for the other two days, but at least it wasn't as humbling and embarrassing. In other words, a neutral day rather than a negative one. :-) Tomorrow should be fun.

Spent about an hour walking and jogging around the model area. I was scared when I walked out of there. Pretty tricky stuff, and the ground is quite rocky much of the time, making the footing iffy. Valuable time, though, I'm glad I did it.
Orienteering 1:01:38 [3] ***** 3.6 km (17:07 / km) +50m 16:01 / km
spiked:0/13c slept:8.0 shoes: Integrators (Red)
After this morning's training I knew that I was not going to be redeeming myself through speed. I was going to have to go slow enough to be totally sure of where I was and keep contact. I definitely did the "slow" part. I never really moved faster than jogging, and for much of the time it worked out okay. And then I visited 10 before 9. Yikes! It's not like they're close, either. The surprising thing is that I'm not the only one who did that! Pam and MC did the same thing, and many people screwed up 9 or 10 in some other way. I guess it was the switch into the green area which some have characterized as the "vague" part, but I don't know if that's really accurate.

Again, I'm pretty disappointed, though not as much as yesterday (even though the result is much worse). I think doing a lot of orienteering in this terrain would make me a much better orienteer. For the most part I kept a pretty high level of concentration, looking ahead to make sure I had some obvious or major features along the way. One thing that I did discover is that often I would drift quite far off (50m+) of my desired direction on my way to an intermediate feature that was only 200m or so away. That's pretty far off! I've always known that I was no good on a bearing, but now I know for sure that I can't rely on that until I've gone out and practiced it... a lot! I mean, just feature hopping is all I need to be able to do.

In any case, tomorrow's the long on the same terrain, only with longer legs and route choice and some trail options. I'll take it slow again, focusing a little harder on actually going the right way...

I was looking forward to the sprint because I know that I have gotten faster, especially in this flat, urban terrain, and felt confident that I could handle the sprint navigation at that speed. And I did feel very good physically today. I started hard, and I expected to feel like I needed to slow down a lot by the end, but never did. In fact, I'm sure I could have pushed even harder, I guess I need to adapt to my growing speed (?).

At the beginning and the end of the course I was able to keep in total contact with the map and orienteer well. The problem was in the middle, when I ran twice around a building that I shouldn't have even run around once. I got distracted and momentarily lost track of buildings and ran past number 8, one extra building. I ended up hitting number 9 on the other end of it. Thinking that I must have just missed 8, I ran back the way I came (which was still the wrong building) and all the way back around it. The whole time I was trying to force myself to make the map fit. It didn't. When I got around to the other side of the building I saw what I had done and snagged 8. Thinking that 9 shouldn't be a problem, since I'd already been there, I just raced out and ran to where I remembered it to have been. Only I ran right past it to some other control and had to turn around to get it. Between the two, probably almost two (2) minutes lost!

The interesting thing is that even with that atrocious mixup, I'm pretty sure this is the fastest that I've ever orienteered (both in min/km and in actual sustained running+navigating speed). Keeping the few smaller mistakes but throwing out those 2 minutes gives me a time of 17:15, which I would have been happy with (the top three were around 15 min). I can live with one bad route choice (to 1, which I thought was on the other side of an uncrossable wall) and the hesitation on the way to 5 (thought the wall was uncrossable). It's really, really frustrating to do something so out there when I felt primed to do well. This was probably the most disappointed and upset that I've ever been at the end of an orienteering course. Pissed probably covers it well. Angry and wanting to do really well tomorrow in the middle!

Blerg. Morning run to the water tower. Legs felt like I'd raced on them yesterday. Did one 20s pickup in the middle to see if I could wake them up, but no dice - just tired me out. After the run my hamstrings were all sore, as if I had just raced a 400 or something. I hope I don't feel like this tomorrow. MHR was on the high side this morning, too, though it's been a while since I checked so who knows if 48-50 would still be "normal".

141.5 is the official number from my digital scale. However, in an act of true desperation, I weighed myself on an analog scale that I haven't used in a year, just to see if maybe my dig scale was stuck or something. (Can you smell the desperation?) And I clocked in at exactly 140 pounds. That doesn't necessarily mean anything, but it makes me feel a little better. I definitely feel as if I have been quite diligent at this for several weeks with little to show for it. I'm willing to chalk it up to the famous weight-loss plateau phenomenon, and I'll keep at it...after this weekend.

A little clarification: yeah, I made progress, but most of it came at the beginning (which is to be expected) and I've been especially diligent the past 3 weeks, with almost no change. I'd be happy with 2-3 lbs every 3 weeks, but maybe that's too much to expect? I don't think my body should be so uncooperative when it's still lugging around over 20% fat. ;-)

Two more days until the NAOCs and, barring any dehydrating runs the night before, it doesn't seem possible for me to hit 140. Nor a good idea to actually try. We'll see how close I get. And then I'll have to find a new challenger for the next 5 pounds. :-)

Yuck. Icky morning (t=73, dp=72), legs felt heavy, didn't get much sleep. That's what I get for arguing with people about sexuality education. It gets me so riled up, and it's such a stupid reason to lose sleep. I should probably give up and agree that the "we bought you at Toys 'R Us" approach is appropriate for young kids. Argh. 4x30 second pickups.

Late night run along east flightline. Warmer but (slightly) drier than this morning, and legs felt great. Went a little quicker than usual, just for kicks, but mostly because I'm not planning on doing anything too tough before the weekend.

On my way back some lady driving from the stables slowed to my speed to yell, "It's dangerous to be out here without a light!" To which I replied, "Okay, thanks!"

She continued to drive at my pace and said, "I'm really serious, we hit rattlesnakes out here all the time!"
"Thanks!"
"You really shouldn't be out here without a light, it's dangerous!"
"Thanks!"

I'm not sure what she wanted me to do, pull a magic flashlight out of my foot? I appreciate her concern for my safety, but two things made her seem silly. 1) The moon was crazy bright and lit up the road like gangbusters. 2) I run or ride on that road almost every day and I have never ever seen a snake, alive or dead. She must be hitting them and then taking them home for the grill.

That was the entertainment for the evening. Also on a positive note, the run cured the headache that I had. I'm almost certain it was from exceeding the recommended daily allowance of DDP. I won't do that again any time soon. (Or maybe at least not until tomorrow.)

Randolph x 1.5. Evening, typical wind from the SE, about 88 and 63, felt pretty good. Went a little faster today - same route and conditions as Wed, but 5 min faster. The consistency of riding a few times a week, even if all easy, certainly pays off. I want bike commuting to feel effortless...

Getting in to the teens now, 19 to go! It's a good thing, too, because "fall" is showing no signs of arriving, what with more 90+ degree weather forecasted all week. Canadia should be refreshing.
