Red course, day 1. Hm, what to say... I guess this was a decent run. I would say I didn't make too many mistake mistakes, but I certainly lost 30s-1 min a couple of times from what I might call lollygagging or poor decision making or trudging when I could have run. I did pretty much come to a screaming halt about 2/3 of the way through the course. I bet I'm not the only one, because you can push pretty fast here. But I think some of it is definitely due to my recent lack of quality training.

So this was an okay day, but I want to be smoother tomorrow. It's easy to just sort of aim in the right direction here because the vegetation boundaries and streams make for good catching features. But I want to feel more like I am actually navigation directly to the control, not just to the circle.

Sprint in the afternoon. This was a good run. Just a few 5s bobbles. Okay, maybe one weird route choice, but that's 5-10s. I started fast and.... faded fast. Last few controls I was not moving very quickly at all. I'll be very curious to see the splits. The result is that I wasn't nearly as close to the speedsters as I would have hoped for an almost clean run. Guess that means I should train more...

Interestingly, lower average and max HRs for the sprint than for the morning's run. I thought it was a matter of my HR tending to just keep increasing over a long run, but the graph says differently. I guess I was a little worn out! :-)

Fair Hill Goals:

Obviously I've been in a bit of a spring slump. I predict changes in the near future. But, with the recent past in mind, I don't feel like I'm going to be super sharp this weekend. I have been looking at Fair Hill maps (my scanned copies, since all my map binders are already in Tucson) and I think what I should focus on this weekend is route execution. There will likely be legs with several route possibilities - not necessarily major differences, but things I'll have to think about before I barrel ahead. I am going to try to make a choice quickly, stick with it, and execute it as planned. That's the goal. Plus, of course, not making many mistakes. ;-)

Evening run in the foothills with my new shoes (!). Shoes felt great. Plus, they're green!. My hammies are a little sore, I'm not sure why. I didn't stretch after the last few running outings, but I rarely stretch my hamstrings, anyway. Maybe my lull in training has been more of break than I thought and I strode it out a bit too much? Seems odd. A bit chilly today (30s in the morning) but it was warm enough by the time I got out that I was okay in the only running clothes I still have here (shorts and tee).

Pretty hectic day today. Spent much of the day in the squadron trying to find people, call people, or fax people. I think we've made a lot of progress and I might actually leave for Tucson on Monday. Or Tuesday. The amazing part is that I can actually go to the DVOA meet. It took a little bit of finagling of my flight and local transportation plans, but it'll work.
Note
My exciting moment of the day concerns security forces and my lack of a line badge. In order to access the flight line (ie, where all the planes are, and where the squadron is) you need to have a line badge. There are all these pictures of people with their face on the pavement and various security forces members' boots on their backs because they don't have their line badge.

Well, I turned in my badge because I'm done with training and am all out-processed. For the most part I've been very good about waiting for an escort or at least scoping out the area to make sure there aren't any security forces dudes around. Today, on my way out, I was a bit giddy because it looked like things were going to all work out and I threw caution to the wind and busted out towards the parking lot. And then I saw a pair of security forces airmen in full gear with their M16s. My initial thought was that perhaps they were just guarding some visiting high-value asset. Then I noticed that their course was very close to an intercept trajectory of my course. That's when I thought, "Oh shit."

Thankfully, these young, admirable airmen were of the 'ask questions first, face to the pavement later' variety. So rather than a mouthful of asphalt all I get is, "Ma'am, could we see your line badge?" This is where I turned on my inscrutable charm. A quick explanation, an admission of guilt, and a few quick but effective jokes and I was on my way. In fact, they were so charmed that they offered to give *me* their M16s so that I could escort *them* off of the flightline. I refused, of course, because I was in a hurry. But, it was certainly a moment to remember.

Nice day. Afternoon (arduous) run in the foothills. In Albuquerque. Because I'm still here.

I should clarify. I don't mind that I'm still here. Being in Albuquerque, in general, is just fine with me. What I do mind is having been told no less than three times that everything is good to go, only for that to have been something of a fib each and every time. I was told today to "relax and enjoy the free time off", which is great. If there's anyone who's an expert at taking advantage of "free time off" in the Air Force, it's me. Except I would have liked to have heard that before I had packed away all my bedding and thrown out the last of my perishable food and spent the entire day hanging around the squadron waiting for mysterious phone calls from Texas. But hey, I have a comfy couch and plenty of granola bars and I'm still getting paid. Being flexible is part of this job, but to me that means I can expect to hear something like, "Well, we don't know how long it will take to fix this, so standby to standby!" Not, "It's all set! Come in tomorrow morning before you head out!"

I hope I have conveyed my frustration without sounding too whiny.

Ran down to the 4th Ave Street Fair, late morning. Nice day. (Do I need to write that anymore?) Running was exhausting. We ran down, walked around for a while, looking but not buying (!), and then walked most of the way back. Just a little running at the end. Oy, not good.

Off to unload the car and fill up the storage unit, then back to ABQ. Yesss, I love long drives. By myself. On beautiful days.

Winged Victory

I have no idea who did it, but I strongly suspect someone closely related to me.

...

Okay, so it's gone now, but my sister had added the following text to the "Notes" section:

US Air Force Navigator Cristina Shelby Luis was famously nick-named the Winged Victory after she landed an HC-130, on ground, even though its wings had fallen off because the pilot, a fat, greedy Texan, got hungry and really likes wings. She was actually already called Winged Victory for her ability to orienteer without using her head or arms. This is an amazing skill, considering that Cristina Luis is not a robot; she's just *really* good at orienteering. But the airplane story is kind of more exciting, no offense to orienteering (Grass, Speed, Ecstacy).

Sweet, another run! Felt pretty much like a drugged slug the whole way. And that's even though I feel 75% healthy. Sleep and lingering hacking are the problem, I guess. Once again, crazy high heartrates for moving at a shuffle.

It was nice out, overcast but warm, and started to rain as I was headed back down to my car. It wasn't raining much but it *smelled* like rain, which was awesome. Trying to chill out and be relaxed for my check ride tomorrow night. THE check ride. Not that I'm worried about it. Not at all.

Red course on the Chimney Rock map, local Tucson meet. I'm feeling about 50% better than I was during the week, which is great... but I started running as if I were 100% healthy and it hit me after about 5 controls. Walked much of the second half of the course. Also blew two controls, one because I saw a freakin' mylar balloon straight in front of me, looking just like a control for a silly parallel error (control was in the next reentrant to the left). Pretty nice area, never been there before. Very nice map. Too bad I had such a slow day!

At least when I was feeling good I was also orienteering well, had some very nice 'flow' at the beginning.

It's hot in Tucson. Hit 94 (!) yesterday, a new record for the date by 6 degrees! Too bad I'm going to get here after the heat starts to pick up. I guess I'll just have to find a way to make lots of orienteering trips to get some relief. Finland sounds good. ;-)

Just checked HR and I'm really surprised at how high it was. I think it was a combination of the heat and the rough terrain, so that even walking and slow jogging was strenuous. Oh, and I almost forgot - saw the usual ranch animals - spooked a few cows, saw one horse and... a gray fox! S/he was extremely cute, despite being a member of the dog family.

Note
I feel like less of a wimp - I really am sick! It's not just allergies. It's just a cold, but now I feel like it's reasonable for me to feel sluggish.

Pretty interesting time in the HC-130 world last night - both my flight and a buddy's flight in Tucson. Both involved potential ground egress (ours for a possible fuel leak, his for a possible failed nose gear) and both involved really impressive bird strikes! Talk about a coinky-dink!

Felt like I needed a shower, so I had to figure out a way to earn one. Ran to Walgreens and back. It's hard to run with a 12-pack of DDP in your hands.

I've slept 16 of the last 30 hours and feel like I haven't slept at all. Awesome!

I also used the trip as a trial run of my new glasses that arrived yesterday. Now I have an up-to-date prescription pair of lenses that aren't BCG-style flight glasses. Being gov't lenses they aren't exactly stylish, but they're free so I'm not going to complain. I've been wearing an old back-up pair of glasses for a couple of months now. Hey, maybe all of a sudden I'll be able to see controls from even farther! ;-)

Ran up a bit of Embudo Canyon. I was feeling pretty weak but still managed to go uphill fairly well on the sandy stuff. Then I got into the canyon itself, which is pretty cool. There was water in the stream and lots of little waterfalls along the way. Sort of like a tighter, more bouldery version of Pima Canyon, only without the horny bee. But it was too bouldery and covered in slippery mud to make it a "run" rather than a "hike", and I felt like running, so I turned around and ran around the foothills for a bit longer.

Unfortunately, I felt entirely unenergetic and had to cut my plans short. Most of the typical allergy symptoms are gone, I feel much better in that respect. Plus I slept well, I've eaten well, I'm rested, hydrated, and I wanted to run... so obviously something's still wrong. Maybe I just have a really nasty reaction to all this Juniperus. Maybe I've got some strange New Mexican blood disease. Whatever it is, it's the suck.

Wuhu, logging some training!

Went for a sunset run in the foothills. Like summer today. Okay, not quite that warm, but maybe like a Canadian summer day. Felt pretty awful all day but running actually felt pretty good. Didn't have a watch on and I was bummed when I got to the car and saw that I had been just short of 40 min. I guess I could have run around the parking lot for a minute.

Gave my 30-day notice for my apartment today. I hope that's a good guess!

Well, I thought I was just allergic to Texas but apparently I am also allergic to New Mexico. This is what I get for making fun of all those kids with the bad immune systems and allergies all the time when I was in elementary school.

I can handle the sneezing. The itchy/watery eyes and scratchy throat are fairly unpleasant and a bit sleep-depriving. But the faucet for a nose is the worst. This is ridiculous. I like pollen! Why does it have to be so mean?

Easy evening loosening run in the foothills with Melissa... though she might object to the word 'easy', especially with the emphasis on 'hills'. Felt really good today, guess next time I should run another course or two to make sure I get tired out.

Nice day, warm (around 60) but sort of hazy, which made for an awesome sunset.... in shorts and a t-shirt, of course! (Just trying to make the northeasterners jealous of my NC-like weather.)

My shin still hurts from running into that log yesterday. No biggie. Seems I got off easy on the weekend compared to others!

Yeah, not much of a warm up. I figured with a 10km course there was no rush. The first few km would do the trick.

Not a bad day, but certainly not better than yesterday. For the most part I paid close attention to what I was doing, even if that meant moving more slowly. I had my moments of faster running (especially on the roads), but I was generally move much slower than yesterday (more than the difference in length would dictate.)

My one big disaster was to number 7. I was being very slow and careful on the way to the circle to prevent something like yesterday. Then I ended up blowing by the control and bailing out to the nearby trail to approach it from the "safer" low side. It was slow moving through there, making a costly mistake even costlier.

On the positive side I think this is probably the first time that I have done a longer/long-style course without it feeling like a slow slog. It felt a little more like real orienteering. I also find it comforting that I can run a 10km course without feeling hungry or thirsty (at least at this temperature). I certainly had plenty of energy to move faster, which means I shouldn't have a problem picking up the speed on longer courses as I gain navigational confidence on them. I did try to break the longer legs into shorter segments, which seems to help me quite a bit, I just need to do it faster and with a bit more conviction.

Finished well, though I was slow to 11 after bashing my shin on a log and limping to the control. That was the second time that I swore on the course, the first being after examining the lack of options for routes to number 8.

Fun course again. (Thanks Vlad!)

Given my "goal" and low expectations this ended up being pretty good. But, realistically, pretty good is not enough to really feel satisfied, regardless of what I expected.

I felt good and ran well and fairly carefully to 1 and 2. Saw Viktoria leaving 2 as I approached. I've gotten very good about ignoring other people's routes and doing my own thing. In this case I successfully avoided being influenced by another runner as far as route choice... but not as far as speed or desperation. Thinking that she'd get stuck in green and that this was a chance to blast ahead I tore through to the road as fast as possible, not paying attention to my direction. Ended up making a beautifully ridiculous parallel error, blowing through two "this doesn't seem right...." moments. It was awesome. By the time I saw 3, Sarah and Angelica were just punching, so I figure 4 minutes lost.

The rest of the course went much better. Made it to 4, punching quite a bit ahead of Sarah (didn't see her again) and ahead of Angelica. But she caught me again on the way to 5 and we yo-yo'd for the rest of the course. Good to be pushed.

I liked the course. (Thanks Peggy!) And I continue to like middle.

Later in the evening each of my family members found a new friend. Mine was attached to my stomach and was getting plump.

Snuck in a very quick run before one last dinner with Stacie. Quite windy and felt chilly at about 40. Basically just ran an accelerating run, starting at a modest pace and ending at about 7 min/mi for the last few minutes. So not a typical tempo workout but it's something. And I can't believe I had any energy whatsoever after today, especially with the aggravating possibility that today's flight won't "count". It stinks that people waste their puking on flights that don't end up getting anybody any closer to graduating.
