| This bed thing is getting ridiculous. I can't seem to sleep full nights, so even on a vacation day I woke up at a normal early hour (6:30ish)... but then conked out a few hours later. Slept until... 3:30! And didn't feel much better afterwards. Not a very good day. | ||

| WoG! Pretty chill today, but it was v. good.
Did one lap for warmup, followed by stretching, situps, pushups and newbie harrassment. Then 1 lap plus the Viola loop followed by strides and running drills. This whole bumping into people I knew thing is getting fun. Today I saw at least three other people from the UA Cycling team of 02-03. Crazy. And all these people and their friends live within about a 1-mile radius of my house. Crazy. Tucson is fun.

| Ride home, about 4 hours later than planned. I was really, really excited about the Workout Group starting up again tonight and of course that means that I ended up having to miss it. We got tasked with a real-world rescue mission at work and I happened to be the duty officer, which meant staying a bit late as we got stuff rolling. There could certainly be worse reasons for missing WoG. Hopefully I'll make it Thursday. | ||

| Ran in to work. I can tell that this is going to be way more fun in the winter. I love Tucson, but the area between my house and the base is not the most upscale and beautiful. Not to mention, it was warm and slightly humid, there was lots of cars and exhaust, and the dirt along the streets is strewn with trash. It could almost be Dakar.
I left almost everything I needed at work - uniform, shorts and tee, pocket-stuffing accessories, and boots. I ran with my Camelbak Flashflo, which was big enough to stuff my wallet, keys, phone, and clean underwear. Plus water, just because I can. But it's not very comfortable. It would be best if I could run without carrying anything at all, but I'm not sure how to pull that off. Gate guards looked at me like I was a freak and asked me where my bike was. Weight at 143.5 this morning. No indications that I was dehydrated so... new goal is 141 by the Relay Champs. Funny, I think my goal for the NAOCs last year was 140. Grr.

| Skated a lap+some around the golf course with Seabass, who wanted to do something outside this evening. It was actually pretty nice out, the sun blocked and almost set and a strong breeze. Tons of people. It's so awesome to see so many people out exercising, even if at least half of them are walking and they are all just getting in my way. | ||

| I would like to note for the record that any kind of insidious onset post-traumatic heat disease that I may develop should be entirely blamed on Seabass.
We planned for a hike today. In Tucson in the summer that means that you go up in the mountains. We didn't, despite my desires, because Seabass stepped outside at about 10am and said, "It's not very hot, let's just hike close by." It was cloudy. It wasn't cloudy when we rolled up to the trailhead. In fact, it was sunny and murderously hot. We passed one couple out on the trail that were using their car sun blocker reflector things to shield their heads. Very clever. The first thing they said to us was, "It is unpleasantly hot today." Yes, yes it was. And we are all stupid. We started up the Douglas Spring Trail with high expectations, quickly squashed as soon as we started moving. Just after passing the intersection with Carillo (~1 mile up) Seabass surrendered and we decided to loop back down to the car. Last time I tried to find Carillo I lost it and had to zip back down the way I came, but this time we found it and finished off the square, so at least we were productive in that way. AOWN: Saw a bunch of butterflies, approximately 319 lizards, and one snake. It was pretty sweet, a black coachwhip, on the hunt. Its head was high and it was coming down the trail towards a few tasty lizards, lizards who were saved by the fact that that was in our direction, too, and this snake didn't seem too keen on eating us. Not a dangerous snake, but also not particularly cute, either. Either today's weight is wrong or yesterday's is. I'm hoping for yesterday. :-)

| Stopped in on the way for squadron PT. Ran some warm-up laps on the track, then administered a practice test for a few guys (including running the last lap with one), then going for 20 min on the road. Felt pretty shabby, but that's to be expected after 9 days of the apparently not-quite-neverending cold.
I feel like the squadron needs a lesson on even or negative splits. Like, you know, if you want to run 1.5 miles in 10:30 (7 min pace), you shouldn't start at close to 6 min pace. Or if you find that you have started that fast, you should perhaps slow down a bit on the next lap. Or a lot. But if I tried to share information on pacing, or practicing your pace, etc., it probably wouldn't be well received...

| Forgot about the pushups and situps in the morning.
We (finally) had some more torrential rain, knocking out power at work and at home. Riding home would have been shady unless I'd waited a long time, so I got a ride with the plan of running to work on Monday. I just have to figure out how best to carry extra underwear with me. Rain (finally) allowed me to do some yard work. Had a good time with the Hula-Ho. I can't believe how much energy we have to expend to get rid of life in our back yard. We live in a desert and we don't plant things and we don't water it. Why is it covered in green stuff? No fair.

| Still sick. But I think this virus is on its death bed. Thankfully.
Went to the eye doc today to see about getting contacts. Seems that the visual acuity in my left eye has *improved* since March, though the astigmatism has increased. It's a trade-off, I guess. I also asked about PRK, since orienteering without having to use any corrective equipment is even better than having contacts. The whole lasers to the eye thing is sort of freaky, but I figured I should think about it. Pros: -very, very high success rate by the AF docs, which means -high chance of never needing glasses/contacts ever Cons: -slight risk of, um, blindness -have to spend 2 weeks in Texas for the procedure Toss-up: -will be on non-flying status for about 10 weeks So... yeah. Got to think about it.

| Well, this was almost a disaster. I had a lot of controls to put out (mostly near roads or trails) and planned to leave the house at 5am. I brilliantly set an alarm for 4:05pm instead of 4:05am and didn't wake up until 5:15am. I stared at the clock and thought, "5:15, 5:15.... what's wrong with this picture?" Raced up the mountain with Seabass and we hurried off to place controls as quickly as possible.
We didn't get back to the start/finish/registration meadow until 9:10 (starts were supposed to be 9) and I had mental images of the disorganization of the start of the Long Champs last weekend. Luckily most of the ~40 people standing around were totally chill and it went just fine, no revolts or refunds needed, even if it was a bit hectic for that hour. Since this was my first "real" course setting experience I found myself waiting nervously for the first green runner to arrive, worried that maybe I'd placed something in completely the wrong place, or something was really unfair, or it was a really stupid boring course or something. But Mark Everett came back without complaint and in the end it seems that the courses were well received. A few people had a gripe about one particular control (9 on the green), but I can't help it if they thought that the symbol for "southern end" meant "bottom" (the feature was a very very large cliff). So overall a positive experience, a pretty good turnout for a local meet, including many more beginners than usual - I had a little over 20 people in the beginner's clinic! For the curious, courses are up here. And for record, before I'm asked, I think Mook octupled the number of total words spoken to me yesterday. Maybe even more than that.

| One last trip up to Bear Wallow before tomorrow's meet. Set out streamers and controls and made a few notes about some more little map adjustments. Going to have to head up really early tomorrow.
It turns out that a lot of my control locations, especially for white and yellow, are also prime camping spots. On one hilltop I found a couple camping who had made themselves very comfortable. They'd basically taken over the whole top of the hill, and they'll be there for a week. It pretty much ruined the location AND they didn't seem too keen on the idea of people running through their campsite. So I went with the next hill, which wasn't actually on the map (damn those 40ft contours)... Nothing a form line can't fix. Then there was the guy camped on my spur. He was really big fan of Jesus and he was the opposite as far as attitudes were concerned... didn't matter what I did, we were both just enjoying God's land, he said. Besides, he won't be around tomorrow morning, he'll be at church. That worked well. Spent about 3:45 out, but some of it was driving and sorting through controls, etc.

| Drove to work today mostly because I had to be rapid-response ready for a furniture delivery. (I hope Seabass isn't reading this. Shhh...) But it was also a busy day at work involving a bit of driving around base. Part of the driving was to attend two separate presentations - one in the morning and one in the afternoon - on the same topic. I had to go to two of them because I hold two positions which are affected by this topic but for some reason involve different information. What was so important that they held two days of briefings on base? That took me away from my desk for two hours? That they needed to hire a Doctor/retired Colonel to give the briefings? You're going to love this. The topic was ... wait for it ... wait for it... a new form!

Started off pretty zippy, once I turned around and started going the right way from the start. Helps that it was downhill to the first control. Then I got tired. But it was fun, and I just had a few little bobbles, and I didn't mispunch. Sprints are fun, even at 9000'. Spike and Mary both successfully completed their courses, giving us a fine finish and achieving our goal of beating ebuckley's team.

| I finished my leg and went to the download station where Valerie told me that she didn't want to run the third leg for her team and asked if I would do it. I hemmed and hawed for a minute and finally decided to do it. So, after a small cup of Gookinaid I headed out for team.. um, I have no idea. I just grabbed the map from the person with the right number.
Quite unsprintly as far as speed goes, and I even managed to screw up one of the ones that I'd already been to - there was a different forking for the previous control so the approach was different, but I didn't realize that and tried to do the same thing as the first time, which meant I went down the wrong reentrant. Anyway, fun the second time, too, and this team did pretty well, whoever they were.

| Long Champs
Sometimes, half the battle is showing up and the other half is finishing. Today was one of those days. Long courses and Cristina don't mesh - I just can't get in to them mentally. Today, mediocre performance as it was, was actually better than usual for a long. No disasters, just slow, combined with plenty of inefficient route choices. No sense of urgency at all. By about the 8th control I realized that I wasn't having much fun. I couldn't run much, I imagine a combination of the altitude and the steep slopes. So that meant that I'd look at each leg and just sigh and realize that I just had to slog through it. It wasn't that there weren't any interesting route choices (though there could have been more), it's just that my body wasn't into it today. Anyway, finished okay, and that's all it took. First (of the US eligibles) on F-21+. And yes, it is neat to win a pair of US Champs, regardless of the circumstances. ;-)
| Note | ||
| I think this weekend should serve as exhibit 531 (or does it have to be a letter?) for making the US Champs system a bit more svelte.
Ditch the short and long (and maybe the night-o), ditch the two-day classic, and go with one, important, focus-of-the-season, hype it up weekend of Sprint, Middle, Long. Makes them *important*, makes them more competitive, results in slightly less strain on clubs to put on champs events, saves USOF money on medals, puts us in line with international competition, etc., etc. National Championship events should be a Big Dealˇ. It's easier to have one Big Dealˇ per year than several. Hm, maybe we could even get, oh, I dunno, sponsorship? Prizes? I just get all tingly thinking about it. Honest question: why is this such a hard sell? I want to hear the objections so I can formulate my attack. :-)

Today will serve as my (positive) reminder that I should never give up, even after a big boom. I totally blew the first control. Like, practically lost. I think I know what I did, though. I was actually pretty close to the control, to the right, but I thought I was left and went right. Found the first control for the Brown course, though I had no idea at the time that that's what it was. Ran around for a bit (getting even farther from my control) and finally decided to bail to a big open area downhill. On the way down I realized that I was on a very narrow ridge, just like the one between the first two controls. Turned to look over my shoulder and, wouldn't you know it, there it was. At least 8 minutes lost, probably more now that I look at the splits. And this is was a 4km course. Ouch! Put my head down and ran the rest as best I could, since you never know. Maybe everyone else blew the first one, too? (A lot of people did, though mine was quite spectacular). And it went just fine. I found myself "aiming off" a bit more aggressively than necessary, but the small amount of time "lost" by doing that was probably well worth knowing which way to turn. No significant errors and I ran fairly well. The result was first in F-21+ (of the US Champs eligible), surprisingly, and not entirely satisfying for a variety of reasons. But hey, a win is a win. Significantly behind the visitor from Halden SK, not surprisingly, though I did beat her on two splits. Take 'em where you can get 'em.

| Much better today. Almost clean. Almost.
I felt a lot better. Full night of sleep, no cramps, it was cloudy, and I guess a day of acclimation really helps with the altitude. I felt like I could actually run decently today. Not that running uphill was easy, but at least I wasn't bent in half, huffing my way up at a slow walk. Lost ~30 seconds, maybe less, on 13 when I re-folded my map for the next leg a bit prematurely and sort of lost track of where I was on the flat ridge-top. Other than that it was really quite nice orienteering - not terribly technical terrain, but neither was yesterday and I managed to goof that up for several minutes of errors. As usual, I feel like I can see where to improve much more from today's run than from yesterday's. The course was nice, definitely fun to run, but there weren't any of those major "holy crap" route choice decisions to make - probably explains why I didn't have any bigger issues. ;-) Obviously, on a course like this that allows for super fast running, I really feel out of shape. I've gained a bit of mass and haven't been running much over the summer. The latter is sort of on purpose but the former is entirely unacceptable. So, that hasn't changed - I need to get faster. WOG starts up again soon, maybe I can get the schedulers to keep from flying me every Tues and Thurs night! (ha! yeah right) The next observation is the difference in flow and concentration, both between yesterday and today (dramatic difference!) and between the great controls and the adequate ones today. I'll have to write up my leg comments to figure out why some felt really good and others were just satisfactory. First on F-21+ again. That doesn't happen very often.

| Day 1 Red. I was all ready to attack each control, but I'm not sure I really managed that. I was sort of huffing and puffing into most of the controls. I was tired and felt crappy but the orienteering went okay. Just okay, nothing great, nothing disastrous. Especially bobbled stuff at the end. I think definitely affected by the altitude, though I'm sure everyone else was, too. People also complained of "heat". I didn't notice that it was hot, but it was sunny and perhaps I was also affected by that.
Looking at the map now I see that I lost measurable time on 2, 3, 6, 11, 13, 16, and 17. Wow! Most were probably less than 30s, but that's over 3 minutes just with small silly stuff. First in F-21+, with Kissy only 45s behind, putting the pressure on for day 2. She started 4 min in front and I caught glimpses of her on some of the long, open legs, but never got close. This has nothing to do with bad behavior on Kissy's part, though rumors abound that there was much bad behavior to be had.

| Silly game of "ultimate football" against the OSS. Silly because I find it no fun at all to play games with no regard for strategy. Do people really think it's fun to just scramble around and throw hail marys?
Oh yeah, and never pass the ball the girl, either. Wait, that's right, I forgot. Women can't fly, and they can't catch, either.

| My phone and MacBook are still dead. Woe is me.
Really busy at work. I need goals for this weekend. Run clean? That's not very specific. I'll have to think about it.

| Oy. My phone is broken and my computer's HD seems to have died and Seabass is out of town (with her computer and phone), leaving me without communication at home. HD died conveniently just days after the end of my warranty. The same thing happened to my sister's MacBook a few days ago. WTF? And before people ask, I do backup my machine on an external drive... but not frequently enough.
Flying to Portland and back today, at least hopefully "and back" this time since I really don't want to miss going to CO this weekend.

| Ride home. Productive but long day. Would have stayed longer were it not for crew rest... not that I have any problems with crew rest! | ||

| Evening run in the Rincons. Got there as storms were building up on either side. Didn't plan on running much so I figured I'd have plenty of warning to turn around. Legs felt kind of dead, but what else is new? Ran up Douglas Springs and then attempted to take Bajada View on my way back. I don't know where the actual trail is but I seemed to have found a lovely wash that went for a ways in the right direction before abruptly dropping off several meters in a cool looking "seasonal waterfall". No sane way down, and at this point the storm was imminent, so I high-tailed it back to DS and down to the car.
On the way down I passed these three people that I'd passed on the way up. They were still going up, hiking leisurely in shorts and t-shirts and nothing but water bottles... I looked up as I passed them and said, "You guys gonna get wet?" What I wanted to say was, "Are you guys freakin' crazy? You're going to get hit by lightening or washed away in a flash flood or at least catch a cold and be wet and miserable! Turn around now!" All they said was, "I guess we might!" and kept going, obviously unable to read my mind and respond to my concerns about their well-being. Nasty critter report: saw one tarantula sneaking into a hole in the trail just as I ran by. I guess he was skerd.
