XC Skiing 1:20:00 [1]
Went skiing with mami, sis, and seabass at Great Brook. We just took it easy.
Note
My foot got a test tonight - running through Northampton to snag some First Night buttons so we could catch the Nields (and The Kennedys). It felt fine!
Note

Switched languages for the last movie of the year. One of mami's favorites.

Sunday Dec 30

Strength/Core (Yoga) 1:00:00 [2]
Morning yoga session at the hotel with my sister. It was a good class, the instructor gave us a good mix. She's obviously really into yoga, because she's getting married later today and still taught the class! (She'd already had her hair done.)
XC Skiing 45:00 [2]

Went out for some skiing with the whole gang. Unfortunately, the mushy stuff from yesterday had frozen well overnight and it wasn't so great today. My mom and dad bailed after only a few minutes, and my sister and Lauren headed back up shortly thereafter. I thought they had bailed completely and returned their skis, but apparently not since they just walked in... I guess they found a flat meadow and goofed off for a while. Anyway, I figured it would be good HTFU training to hit the icy trails for a bit. I seemed to be the only one on skis, which makes sense. It really wasn't very good.

Foot felt fine, though I did whack my head with a ski after a particularly graceful faceplant, so it's not like it was a totally pain-free session.

Saturday Dec 29

XC Skiing 1:35:00 [2]
ahr:154 max:180 (injured)
A tiny bit more snow last night, so today's ski started out pretty nice. Went out with mami again but I wanted to be able to go more, so we had a plan and she took a map so that I wouldn't have to yo so much on the yo-yoing. Kind of worked. I did still have to stop any time there was something mildly treacherous to make sure she'd get by, and then it turned out that the map is pretty bad.

We were the first skiers on most of the trails, which would have been great had the snowshoers stayed home, too. Those guys plodded all over the place. Really awesome. Mami skied for about 50 minutes and then headed in, I went out on the other side of the hotel and found the trails to be much worse off. And then it got pretty warm (close to 40) and the snow got mushy and I thought my foot was starting to bug me, so I went in. I think the foot thing was a figment of my imagination, because it didn't bother me at all once I got back to the hotel. I guess I'm just worried about it.

Cold is lingering, but not an issue anymore.

Only orienteering related activity today was the Swedish massage. I think that counts. Actually, I have been thinking about goals for next year, since it is almost that time again. First, though I'll have to face up to a critical examination of went right (and, more painfully, what went wrong) over the past year. It should be entertaining if nothing else.

But first, time to watch the Pats make history.

XC Skiing 52:00
ahr:148 max:180 (injured) (sick)
Got up to NH a little later than planned, but early enough to get out before dark. It snowed up here in the past day so there was actually fluffy stuff on the trails. Not a lot of it - lots of little streams that weren't covered - but plenty to make it fun. Yo-yo'd with mami again.

Foot felt just fine. It was bothering me a lot yesterday, when I didn't do anything except stand around and walk at the MFA, but today it feels pretty good. I've been taking more vitamin-I and I guess it's helping. Maybe? That would be really nice.

I think I should earn mad bonus points for being good and resisting the urge to play StepMania these past couple of days. Right now my mom is playing in the next room and I really really really want to play. Does the amount of will power required to rest count for anything? I think it should.

XC Skiing 57:00 [2]
(sick)
I didn't feel terribly awful this morning and I was basically fed up with not doing any exercise, so I went skiing. My mom and I went to Great Brook for some really not great snow... but the weather was awesome and it was skiing. I yo-yo'd in front of my mom for about 45 min, trying to help her with going up and down more comfortably (she can go on the flats just fine!). She was dead beat after that and went back to the car. I squeezed in another 10 min.

My foot bothered me for the first few minutes but after that I didn't really notice it. It doesn't seem to be so bad now. Maybe skiing is okay? Should I stop doing stuff?

Les Diaboliques (1)
Good good good.

I played a little bit of StepMania today with my mom and sis (we got my mom a dance pad) but not much because doing so aggravated the top of my right foot. It hurt a lot after the VFM, but so did everything else so I didn't pay too much attention to it. The pain went away almost completely with rest, just like all the soreness, and then came back pretty noticeably after walking around a bunch yesterday. It only hurt when the foot was flexed up, but now after some DDR it hurts all the time. I guess it's tendinitis in a brand new place. How exciting! At least it is very bearable pain... and I'm still sick and the snow stinks anyway, so I doubly don't feel like I'm missing out on anything.

Eugh, woke up with a sore throat. I love getting sick! Especially at the very beginning of a vacation. It's time for an experimental evaluation of Cold-EEZEŽ. I wonder how many I can fit in my mouth at one time?

Running (road) 32:00 [1] 2.78 mi (11:30 / mi)
shoes: Gus
I spent the afternoon interviewing applicants to the U of R. It was interesting, but none of them wanted to go run with me so I had to wait until dark. Went for an easy run with seabass, most of the way around the golf course. It was actually kind of chilly out. We walked the rest of the way home once seabass declared the end of the running period and my hands were stiff and slow by the time we got back!

Everything felt normal, which means I will enjoy the holiday week as planned... as long as the snow cooperates.

Friday Dec 21

Note
Half an hour ago I knew nothing about water polo. Now I know a few things that surprised me:

1. You can only handle the ball with one hand
2. Only the goalie can touch the bottom of the pool
3. Water polo players are not all hot

Now, except for number 3, I'm not sure how to adapt this for my out-of-shape squadron. I have 15 minutes to figure it out! Full report later.

Swimming 40:20
Well, it turned out not to matter what the rules are. We didn't actually play water polo, we played a 20-on-20 juvenile male bonding game that just happened to involve a water polo ball and two nets, in a pool. And a surprising amount of physical contact for a group of homophobic frat boy types.

Wednesday Dec 19

Running (road) 20:00 [2] 2.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: Kayano XII (pink)
More successful than yesterday but there's still trouble. Went for a sunset run out to the golf course. Everything feels pretty good, so I wanted to do an easy 30 min, but my right Achilles kept flaring up. Stretched a little before and I was pain-free to start, but I ended up stopping every 5 minutes to stretch. And then it would flare back up. Feels like tendinitis, which shouldn't be a big problem. No reason to do much running these two weeks anyway... I just hope it doesn't stop me from skiing next week. (!)

But, that does remind me that I should send a nasty postcard or something to a particular doctor who, many years ago, after lots and lots of nasty tendinitis, told me that my feet were attached to my legs wrong, I should have had surgery as a kid, and that, sorry, but I'd never run a marathon. To him I say "HA" and "pbbbbbbbt!"

Tuesday Dec 18

Note
Seabass ordered me to drive to work today. Something about the combination of walking funny yesterday and having to get up at 4 to go to work. I complied. I may go for an easy run this evening, as I am still sore but not prohibitively so... I'll wish myself luck.
Note
I stepped out the door, ran about 30 steps, then turned around and ran back. Everything felt fine walking around, but as soon as I started running I had a pretty nasty tugging feeling on my right calf/achilles, enough that I was going "ker-plonk, ker-plonk" pretty heavily down the street. I don't think that another day or two of non-running will hurt me. But I am bummed.

Ride in, a little slower than usual.

Sleep is a wonderful, restorative process. When I woke up this morning I was fully expecting my legs to feel worse today than they did yesterday. Amazingly, much to my delight and extreme joy, they felt much better. I'm still really sore, but I don't even think I'm walking funny any more!

Recovery day 1. Got a good night's sleep and woke up with pretty stiff and sore legs. Definitely walking funny. I hobbled along with Sandy (not hobbling) for about an hour out in the rain, checking out many of the TNT haunts that I read about each week. I had to yell at her to slow down several times. Well, not really yell, just sort of plead or state clearly that I was slowing down.

I lucked out on the trip home - no one next to me on either flight, so I could stretch my legs out.

Wuhu! Done! This was fun. I do hurt, but that's part of the fun.

Perhaps I will be motivated later to write a detailed description, like maybe tomorrow afternoon when I get snowed into PHL while trying to get back.

I will say a few things - first, that an orienteering marathon is obviously far superior to a road one because it is far more interesting. I think I settled into a good pace, nice and reasonable, I think just fine. The first two hours flew by and it wasn't until about the 3:20 mark that I started to notice time. My hamstrings were pretty sore then and by the 4 hour mark I was hurting all over, even my abs! I was able to keep running through to the finish, though, which I was not necessarily planning on being able to do. It helped to run the last 1/4 of the course with Jeff, I think we kept each other from making some silly mistakes and it certainly helped me to move a little faster.

I thought Wyatt did a fantastic job with the maps. Two cases and five maps was a bit unwieldy, but that was just one more mental distraction to stop you from thinking about the pain, something a little bit fun.

I really missed the ice pellets.

Wednesday Dec 12

Cycling (road) 20:00 [2]
Ride in. The nasty weather has passed through and we're back to blue skies and sun... and shorts. Looks like the mountains got a good dumping of snow, at least over ~6500'. Too bad I won't get a chance to get up there soon.

I didn't intend for this tapering to involve so little running. I don't think it will much matter, as I don't think Saturday will be about running. It'll just be about deciding that I want to keep going for 5+ hours in the cold and not changing my mind.

I can't believe I waited so long to see this. If I'd paid any attention to what it was about when it came out I probably would have run to the theater to watch it. I can't believe that the 3 names on the front didn't make me do that, but I guess I do have *some* standards.

Cycling (road) 20:00 [2]
Ride home, after waiting a few minutes for a big nasty storm to pass through, hail and all! There were big puddles almost the whole way (really little lakes that took up exactly the width of the bike lanes) until about 1/8 of a mile away from home. Then it was dry. Neat.
Strength/Core 30:00 [2]
I convinced seabass to join in on some hard core stuff... but the power went out somewhere near the end so we didn't quite finish.

Orienteering race 1:24:00 *** 7 km (12:00 / km) +135m 10:57 / km

Phoenix meet at First Water, on a "contour only" map. No roads or trails (there are quite a few of them) except the big main one as safety... but there were fences and pits, which came in handy. First part of the course went through a fast and flatter section and then we headed into some gnarly rocky stuff with more intricate contour detail. It was a good course, and since Max started 2 min ahead and Ludwig a few behind we had some good head-to-head. The terrain, when flatter, is pretty runnable, though definitely thicker than Arthur Pack yesterday. Had a lot more leg to cactus collisions than I would have liked.

I had a few pretty significant goofs. A couple of minutes on 3 (not paying attention and drifting) and a couple more on 4 (bad plan). Seems I had slightly less efficient route choices than Ludwig to 7 and 9, and then lost another minute on 10 (momentary complete and total disorientation) and bits here and there. That's lots of minutes. When I left I think I was still second, which means I beat Max, Windy (barely), Dave, Erik and Ron...nice set of names, but I was a whole 10 minutes behind Ludwig. I guess we all stunk it up a bit.

As far as good stuff, I felt very in control on the first two controls, just like it should be, and felt like I was okay on 6-9. Those were in the slower section, and I certainly have trouble keeping the intensity up when you can't move fast and you can't look at the map well while trying to avoid tripping over a rock into a cactus. Just gotta keep doing it.

The map.

Saturday Dec 8

Orienteering 1:10:00 *** 6.7 km (10:27 / km)

Went up to the site of the club's newest map at Arthur Pack and ran the red course that Ludwig set for next weekend's meet.

This was really neat. The park is quite small and would be a pretty boring map if it were normal. But it's mapped at 1:6000 with 4 foot contours (a little weird, but it works) and detailed vegetation that includes all mature saguaros. Immature saguaros aren't mapped, which I thought might be a bit confusing on the run, but it turns out to be brilliant. (Mature saguaros, in this case, are the ones with arms.)

The courses are control-picky in character, which I think is great use of this terrain. It's almost completely flat, but the slight dips and dry washes and washlets are also mapped very well. It's a nice change from the terrain we have that are essentially contour maps with almost no additional detail and very high visibility. On those maps you can get lazy - just look off in the distance to see the ridge or reentrant you're looking for and run. You have to pay attention with this stuff. I guess it will be easier with actual controls instead of the teeny tiny flagging Ludwig used.... and I predict some really fast times.

Anyway, about my orienteering - okay. I had plenty of good legs where I did all the things I wanted to do, but goofed a few, too, and that's no good. When things went well I was preparing for what I'd see ahead and adjusting on the run. Things didn't go well if I just tried to go in the right direction. Of course, part of that is my inability to actually go in a straight line, but that's even more reason to be looking ahead. This was good practice, I'll have to go back for more.

I wanted to go for a nice run at Sabino Canyon this morning but Seabass drove to work so I was carless. Instead I worked on the family calendar, version 2 (Le Calendrier Luis 2008) and went out at about noon for a quick jog around da hood. Over to the bike path and back in my new shoes. I've decided to follow feet's lead and give my shoes names, starting with those of ex-boyfriends, because there are so many similarities between the two kinds of relationships.

Seabass and I hiked up to Mt Wasson today, the highest peak in the Tucson Mountains. I know, it sounds so treacherous - going to the top of a mountain in December, with the winter weather warnings barely expired and no special mountaineering equipment to our name. Who knows what kind of wintry assault awaits those foolish enough to make the ascent, especially with all those nasty storms all over the country. Luckily, this is Tucson, and Mt Wasson is only 4687', so it was actually quite gorgeous.

Lots of other people on the trail today, including Margrit from the O club. Crazy! We made our way up at a nice pace, ate lunch on top and then scuttled back down. Trip up took us ~1:45 and the way down ~1:35... but we basically didn't stop on the way down, unlike the way up. I think this would make a good running trail, especially the bottom half. I'll have to come back with less stuff on my back and give it a try.

Proof that we aren't crazy and that it really was nice:
