Other Cardio 30:00 [2]
weight:144.5lbs
Circuit training workout as part of the Physical Training Leader class. I had been dreading this class because I'd heard from the other PTLs in the squadron that the instructor really gave them a brutal workout at the end of the class. I think they're just a bunch of wimps.

My legs (quads especially) are sore from yesterday.
Skating (inline) 35:00 [3] 5.7 mi (6:08 / mi)
ahr:153 max:169
Skated around the bike path a couple of times. All I can say about the state of my legs is "oof". I'm sure the 'wimpy' PTL workout didn't help, with those lunges and bleachers and skips (and lions and tigers and bears).

It was really busy tonight on the bike path. I counted over 120 (different) people on my second lap. Craziness! This includes Mike and Lazslo, so I think at this point I can't consider it a coincidence if I see them at Reid on a weekday between six and seven...

Sunday Mar 30

Running (trail) 2:24:00 [3] 10.4 mi (13:50 / mi) +620m 7:16 / km
shoes: Asics B&Y
Seabass and I headed over to the other side of the Tucson Mountains for a go at the Hugh Norris Trail. I ran, she hiked, me to the top of Wasson Peak. I didn't think I had the energy to run, especially up a mountain, but it was just fine. It was quite lovely out, about 80 and lots and lots of flowers blooming. I'm no good with flowers, but I do know that the Ocotillos (red flowers) were at the end of a bloom, many creosote bushes were going (yellow), and what appears to be brittlebush (also yellow), not to mention wildflowers in blue, purple, and white.

Took Hugh Norris all the way to the top (4.9 miles, 78 minutes) and then headed back down the way I came. I meant to take it all the way back to the car, but I took a wrong turn. I found myself switchbacking down the wrong side of the mountains and realized I'd taken the Sendero Esperanza trail. By then I wasn't about to go back up, mostly because I had just talked to some fellow who was also on his way down and I was in a giddy mood, running fast and jumping off rocks, as I left him. I didn't really want to go back up there and have him ask me if I'd made a wrong turn.

I figured this was just a good way to get another new trail in, and that I could just take the SE trail to the (dirt) road and then run it back to the car. Then I pulled out my map and realized that would be an extra ~5 miles or so. Luckily, there was another trail cutting off most of that distance. Unfortunately, it was more of a wash than a trail. Fortunately, I was going downstream. Headed back on the road and got scooped up by seabass just before getting to the lot.

This was a good run. I picked Hugh Norris because it's the longest way to the top without any significant descent, so it seemed the most runnable. Probably even better earlier in the day (or in the winter).

Totally different topic: I dumped Firefox today for Safari 3.1. It's fast. Me likey.

Ran from the sq to PT, then two laps of the golf course track (each 1.5 mi). Then we "played" football for half an hour (totally unloggable) and then I ran back to the squadron (it's really close), beating just about everybody who had driven...

WOG. Legs felt like lead to start with, not surprising at all given the quality and quantity of my sleep lately. Quite fitting that I am to participate in a sleep/fatigue survey for the flight docs the next couple of weeks. I wish they could have nabbed me two weeks ago - I could have shown them crazy sleep and flying schedules.

- warmup (reverse Viola)
- 4x strides

- an extra lap of the golf course to warmdown

I did the hard minutes at 6:30-7:00/mi pace with the recovery minutes at around 9:30 pace.

Okay, so apparently artefact and artifact are both acceptable spellings, though I'm not sure that they are used interchangeably in all settings. Artefact came naturally to me when I typed, even though I'm sure I see artifact more often. Strange.

Strength/Core (DH Skiing) 1:30:00 [3]
Skiing at Arizona Snowbowl. It was sunny and warm and the snow was nice. I can see why people always rave about spring skiing.

I spent a few hours with seabass on the easier slopes while I practiced my telemark turns. This was a fair role reversal from yesterday, except that there was no getting back at her for the ice-slamming. In fact, she didn't fall even once, despite my duplicitous lift selection. Seabass called it a day early and I headed up to the top for a few more runs. You can see the North rim of Grand Canyon from up there, but it's crazy because the actual canyon is not visible at all. If that was the first glimpse you had of it, you'd be in for a real surprise once you got there.

It was really bright out and, despite the fact that I was wearing sunglasses the entire time, I seem to have sunburnt my eyes or something. They stung like hell for about 6 hours after I stopped skiing, to the point where I was even wearing sunglasses in the dark because the light of oncoming traffic made them hurt more. They only hurt a little now, and I'm hoping that they recover overnight. AZ is not the kind of place that's easy to go around if you can't stand sunlight.

XC Skiing 1:15:00 [2]
ahr:138 max:165
Morning ski at Flagstaff Nordic Center with seabass. I'm not sure how many times snow has to get mushy and refreeze before you can no longer call it snow, but whatever it is the stuff today would qualify. Cold enough in the morning that it was pretty solid, but only an hour later (about 10am) sunny spots were already getting soft. It was nonetheless very nice to be out in the cold and on skis once more this year.

It would be nice to get in some skiing of the more vertical variety tomorrow, just so that I can remember what it's like to go down without being scared silly. I don't think I can convince seabass, even as a special birthday favor.
Skating (Ice) 45:00
Skated at the rink in Flagstaff in the afternoon. Got some instruction from Coach Trout, until she threw me to the ice with what she claims is a precision skating maneuvre. I think she is just hiding unknown mad phat hockey skills.

Midday run at Sabino Canyon, Bear Canyon Trail. Felt okay, but I had an awful time trying to sleep last night (again). Got to the first stream crossing and hadn't hit the pre-briefed turnaround time so turned around at the second one. Caught up to seabass right before getting back to the parking lot, which was surprisingly full. On a Thursday! That's pretty neat.

Three days in a row doesn't sound like an outlier.

In to work. I had a sort-of surprise check ride last night. I got us to the drop zone 14 seconds too late (which *can* mean you fail the ride), marring what would otherwise have been a fine (but not fantastic or great) performance. At least the drop scores were good.

This morning's weight value is almost certainly an outlier.

I managed to drag Elithe (from the relay team) to WOG tonight. Randy wasn't there for the usual new-person hazing, so she got off easy. Which means the chances of her returning are a little higher, I think...

A lot of people raced this past weekend (a local half marathon, mostly) so not a too many people were doing the hard workout, and apparently no one my speed. So I was alone, which is probably why this felt hard. It also felt a little tough because I was a bit too ambitious with the pace, I think.

We did a reverse Viola loop for warmup and then strides by the path. Menu:

? 2x800 @ 10k pace w/400 R (3:31, 3:32)
? 1x1mi @ 5k pace w/400 R (6:53)
? 2x800 @ 5k pace w/400 R (3:31, 3:29)

I did the first two 800s too fast, which meant I tried to do the mile faster (to at least be consistent with the stepdown intent of the workout). I succeeded, but then I couldn't do a second mile (a suggested variation) and had to push it for the last two 400s... and didn't manage to do them as fast as the mile, which means I was too fast on the first stuff. Or that I should have run with someone to help push the pace, preferably someone with different political views that piss me off.

It's "cold" and rainy in Tucson today, but I managed to catch Saguaro East during a brief moment of sunshine. Broadway trailhead, felt pretty good. I managed some terrain running when it seemed prudent to do so in shorts. Only one case of poor judgement. It did start to rain at the end, but I needed some cooling off as I had worn a long sleeved shirt. (!!!)

It's now hailing at my house, so I think I managed the timing well. And I may just drive in to work tonight.

TSN meet at Ironwood, a new (and not quite finished) map. Driving in to the meet site I was a little worried about runnability, but it was actually pretty good. Not quite as easy to dodge around prickly stuff as in Arthur Pack, but good enough. It's also mostly quite flat - almost as flat as AP - but is sans mapped saguaros. Instead, the key visible features are the green washes, which stand out because they are filled with trees. Since they are linear features rather than point features they are easier to see than single saguaros. However, they're really long and don't make it as easy to know exactly where you are...

Red course was a good test of concentration. I passed the test, though I am still in need of further improvement. I started moving very carefully after 4 because I could see that relocation would be a real bitch. Worked great, nailed the next few, and then I got to 9... I started going straight like I had on the rest, and then realized that there really wasn't any attackpoint or good way of fixing my position that way. Then I got confused by a patch of green that made me think I was way right of the line, decided to cut way back to the left, and then was lucky enough to see the yellow patch and hit the control from there.

Had real difficulty keeping my concentration on the next few, too. No big mistakes, but I had trouble with the de facto plan of going in a straight line and checking things off. I was moving more like a bowling ball in a bumper lane, catching myself on major linear features off on the sides instead of looking ahead to keep the line.

In all only a couple minutes lost, but I should be able to run here much faster. My FR wouldn't turn on, so I have no splits, HR, or QR. I also had a major failure of the cactus needle proximity sensor, getting cholla'd on both legs simultaneously when I picked a particularly bad moment to read the map.

Feeling pretty tired again today. Slept again in the afternoon, even though I had a good night's sleep last night. Maybe it's the weather...

I feel like there might be something wrong with me. I got home from work yesterday at about 4pm and was I was pretty beat. Enough that I couldn't concentrate on anything serious at all, so I crawled into bed with a book. I read for a bit, then fell asleep and woke up 12 hours later. The only word that comes to mind is "absurd". That happened to be just in time to eat breakfast with seabass before she left for work. However, I was *still* tired, so back to the book and 2 whole more hours of sleep. The last time I slept that much was after pulling an all-nighter (or two).

Once I was finally up and settled I went for a run in Saguaro East (DS trailhead). You'd think that with all the nice rest and timely food and three days off of running that I'd be able to run for an easy hour as planned, no problem. But after five minutes I was considering just making it 20. I did force myself to go out a bit farther so that I'd have to come back, walking if not running. Just after 40 minutes of running I felt completely drained. Luckily I was right by the horse trailhead and decided to bail to the road the few minutes back rather than around on the trails. I was exhausted.

I guess it could feel like this from the stupid schedule last week in combination with not ideal food/drink, but this seems a little extreme. Hopefully that's all it is and not the beginning of some virus or something.

Off to work for a bit so that next week won't suck. I love it!

I ate a decent snack before going to WoG because I figured I was in for a tough Tuesday workout. I wasn't disappointed. We ran a "hill" loop for a warmup, then did the hill loop four times for a "hill" workout (about 30 minutes, with 32 total small hill surges). And then, to make sure we're getting our money's worth, we were to do 1 or maybe 2x mile.

We started out and I was feeling pretty weak. I started to worry that I hadn't been eating enough these past few days and figured I wouldn't do very much of a workout. Then we started the hills and the guys I was running with started talking about the health care industry. I had a strong urge to, ahem, voice my disagreement with their ideas. Politely, of course. Instead, since we were supposed to be surging up hills and not chatting away, I dropped them. I felt better then.

Shooting for 7:15 for one mile. Ran a 7:06 and then decided to do another, since that felt pretty good. Rested for a couple of minutes. Surprisingly, coming back felt even better (it is slightly more down) and I clocked a 6:58. Yeah, I have no idea where that came from. Could be all this WoG stuff is really working. Ten minutes easy to warm down.

On the way home we stopped by a different grocery store to buy Naugle a cake for his going away lunch tomorrow. It's the grocery that was local to us in grad school. Back then it was really ghetto. Now it's, like, totally posh.

So, that was really awesome. We all show at 0500 for a flight that... isn't on the schedule. At least, not on the one that counts. We don't find this out until *after* I've already done all my mission planning, but that's minor on a day like today. Mostly it's just amusing.

Over to Saguaro East in the late afternoon, with seabass, from the Broadway trailhead. Absolutely gorgeous. Seabass did a smaller loop than I did so that we'd meet up towards the end. Worked great. I carried the trail map, but the trail intersections are so far apart on that side that it's not that interesting. At least it's a step in forming the habit.

Saw one jackrabbit and several jillrabbits. Or whatever you call the normal ones. Also heard what I assume to be a pretty big pack of coyotes just over a hill. They stopped howling as I got closer. It was a little freaky at first because I was starting to have this weird panic feeling of, "What if I really *did* run into a mountain lion? What if it mauled me and seabass came up on my remains? What if it mauled seabass?" Sort of stressing, and then I hear all this weird howling and barking. Would have been really wild in the dark.

Shockingly low HR for the effort.

On the way home we stopped at a grocery store in a newer part of town and I was forced to realize that our local grocery is a little ghetto. But just a little.

I had the Phoenix local meet on the schedule for today. Decided this morning that driving all that way for a score-o on a cruddy map really wasn't the best way to spend the day, especially since I'm not feeling very vroomy.

So, seabass and I headed over to Sabino for a run instead. I ran up Phoneline and down the road (!). I had pulled out a water bottle before we left and was going to bring it, but then I figured less than 2 hours running, not very hot (about 70), why would I need water? Of course, that was pretty stupid and I was pretty thirsty on the way down. Wanted to drink from the stream (it was very cold wading through and very tempting) but figured at that point (on the way down) I was close enough to the end not to bother.

Very nice run, anyway. The flowers are blooming in full force up there. Lots of people out, except for the last mile or so of Phoneline. And I will definitely bring water next time.

Yeah. We were going to go skating, but then time slipped by. As it was we were still late meeting Naugle for dinner.
Note
Finally got around to installing QuickRoute. Windows hurts. But QR is neat. Played around with the min/max for the pace colors but not sure what would be the best range. Guess it depends a bit on the terrain. Anyway, here's my first QR map, from Day 1 of the Tucson meet. I think it will be more instructive in trickier terrain. One thing that does come through on this map is how very slowly I go uphill.

Altitude function isn't useful unless there's a way to make it go over 1000m...? And the HR stuff doesn't strike me as useful for me, since I seem to work over such a small range. Anyway, plenty of time for more playing...

We did some stretching, crunches, and pushups and then lined up for a "last airman up" run around the track. I wasn't excited because I like Friday's to be easy, and sprinting up the line over and over again didn't seem like it would be easy... but we had to move so slowly to keep everyone together that it was like a nice recovery run with some pickups.

WOG, completely sans Randy, which meant a very short and non-entertaining stretch/warmup and maybe more people wimping out on the harder workout than usual. The Tuesday workout was 3x1 mile (probably good that I couldn't make it, it wouldn't have been pretty) so today was either the same or 8-10x 1 min hard/1 min easy. Most people were tired from Tuesday and opted for the minutes. I didn't really want to do the miles on my own and wasn't sure they'd feel good. Then one of the guys I recognized as being a little faster than me (Andy) said, "I'll do miles if someone will do them with me". He said he'd already run 9 miles and would probably do 7:15s, which sounded just fine.

-~10 min warmup (reverse Viola loop)
- 4 x strides
- 3x1 mile w/ 3 min easy: 7:04, 7:06, 7:08 (yeah, a little faster than advertised...)

And then we finished up with a cooldown lap around the golf course and some interesting conversation about work and academia and teaching, etc. Turns out we have vaguely similar jobs, as he's an engineer who works with the navigation system on missiles or something over my head like that.

Anyway, by the book I'd say that the miles were not really fast enough to be intervals, but I sure couldn't have run that last one much faster. I guess that means it wasn't a bad workout. Felt good.

Early afternoon run at Saguaro East. Seabass came too but she realized when we arrived that she had forgotten her shoes. Turned out ok, she was a little low anyway, so she just walked in her sandles. Then I discovered that my FR's battery was dead and neither of us had a watch... And we had to watch the time so I could get to work. So... I borrowed her shuffle and estimated time based on song length. Not a bad music selection, except for all the country songs I had to skip.

We looked briefly for barb's bike lock key. No luck.

Still feeling pretty beat up from the weekend. That's pretty amazing. I think it's best if I skip the road race this weekend and just do some casual o.

Mid-day run from home. It was nice and sunny but not hot (about 70), which is a nice change from the weekend's early spring warmth. Walked and ran with seabass to the bike path, then we went in opposite directions so that we could run our own paces. Caught up to her at the top left corner and ran a bit but then she just wanted to walk back. I scurried home so I could catch a shower and lunch before work.

First it was a bike lock, then it was clean undies, then it was mail I had to send, and so on. I was finally all set to go and tried to get on my bike and realized that Gabe had left the seat really high when he was here (shows how long it's been since I've ridden it...). So, back in to get a tool to lower the seat and finally off.

Before lunch I went to get a haircut at the BX and pulled out my bike lock, which turned out to be not actually my lock since my key didn't work. I must have grabbed Melissa's instead. Luckily there seems not to be much bike thievery on base, as it survived outside for the duration of the cut and a long stop at the Wing.

Tried to pick up and pay for a bunch of uniform items for the squadron only to see that they had a power outage and couldn't do anything. Then I got pinged for a urinalysis. Again. It's almost too bad that I have nothing to hide, might be a quick way out of the AF if I did.

Came back and wanted to flight plan for tomorrow's flight but the power's out in that building, too. All in all, a very productive day. Love it. (Your tax dollars at work!)

Ride home. I had two u-locks in my bag. I'm a doofus.

But not as much of a doofus as the AF sports people who are thinking about sending people who have *never* orienteered before to an international competition.

This was tougher than usual. I guess I'm still tired from Ragnar. Or I'm just weak. And chubby.

Note
We finished the race at about 12:45, 23 hours and 45 minutes after starting. We were only the 4th team to finish, so we had a lot of time to wait to see how we placed and for the awards ceremony. It turned out to be a really long time and the awards ceremony was a total cluster. The rest of the organization throughout the race was very good, it was too bad that they screwed up the results so much - the had all the right elapsed times, but they had everyone in the wrong categories, so they were trying to give prizes to female corporate teams who were male and not corporate and the like.

In the end we were 23rd out of 152 teams overall - I'm pretty happy with that, I had no idea we'd be that competitive. We were also the first "Public Service" team out of 5. If we had run in Open Male we would have been 6th of 25. Not bad for a team with two missing runners (people had to double up legs to make up for it) and 4 women.

Since this seems to work, here are photos. I didn't take any at night, and the videos are still coming.

Might be obnoxious, but it's my log. ;-)

Leg 24. I think I managed a little bit of sleep in the back of the van while we waited for the runners in the other van to finish their second set. Once our runners started it was pretty fat paced because everyone had fairly short legs. I set out just before 5am for my "moderate" 5.4 mile leg that had the same amount of climb as my hard 7.3, only in several short, steep doses. It really got tough at the end.

When I finished there was only one runner ahead of us, and we just heard that our first leg runner finished closing the gap. Starts are based on estimated speed, so three are still several teams who started after us. But we have passed everyone who started between 9am and 1pm, which is most of the teams. Go us!

Leg 36, last leg of the race. Surprisingly brutal.

I did manage to get a little sleep in the morning at exchange 31. Then one of the Google team vans parked next to us and we found out that they were only about 45 minutes behind us, and they started at 6pm! We were getting spanked by these guys, but then again, they were a) all guys from b) all over the country and c) fully supported by their employer. There were only a few teams ahead of us, we were still doing well.

The sun was coming out strong and some of the people in my van (like me) were now going to have to run in the heat for the first time. Tony had a brutal uphill 5 mile run, but ran strong, followed by a great double-leg run by Diane. Josh, running only 1 leg for the first time, was at least as tired as everyone else and managed to "only" run miles in the mid-6's. Elithe, the accident-prone member of our team, made it through with nothing worse than a fall that split her hands open and hurt like hell - at least she was able to finish running! Then I was off for the last leg of the race. I had been looking forward to it because it was short and flat, but it was also hot and my legs were pretty sore and stiff. I pushed, but there wasn't anything to push! The heat and the fatigue made this the toughest run of the race for me.

I did have a really weird route that involved, for the third time, some running *with* traffic, as well as a u-turn! I managed to follow all the signs and not get lost. I did get almost a minute rest at a traffic light which was sort of welcome. It's a good thing I didn't get stopped too long at the other, because the next team behind us in the final results was only 58 seconds back!

I got to the Riverside Park and was happy to see Josh there to get me through to the finish chute, were the other 8 team members (and 2 drivers) were waiting to run in with me. Pretty sweet finish! I was glad to be done, also quite tired and thirsty, but the first thing I did was get my free massage at the massage tent. The second thing I did was go get some pizza. :-)

Route map for the last leg (boring) and route map for the whole relay.
