| 1.5 mile run for my annual fitness test. I only need to run 11:24 to max it out (50 points), so it's hard to motivate myself to run to the point of "hurts like death". I haven't been sleeping lately, and I've had very long days at work trying to get a good handoff from the guy who's leaving. So, I considered going for a 10 min run if that didn't hurt too much, and I started at that pace... but I wasn't convinced, so I figured I might as well save my energy for the situps and pushups to come.
400m splits: 1:40 1:43 1:41 1:42 1:44 1:46 All laps came up about 410m on the FR. Pretty consistent to be just noise, and I wasn't always in the inner lane, so it could be pretty close. An extra 60m (well, slightly less, since 1.5mi is actually longer than 2400m anyway...) should be worth a few extra points on the pushups. ;-)
| Strength/Core 2:00 [3] | ||
| Maxed the situps (only needed 47) but really caved on the pushups - only 31. Of course, that's 8.75 points, so not too shabby anyway. Another 10 pushups would have been max at 10 points, which seems like a lot of work for only 1.25 points.
Run: 10:18 = 50 pts BMI < 25 = 30 pts Situps: 47 = 10 pts Pushups: 31 = 8.75 =============== Total: 98.75 Some year I'll actually do some pushups to train so that I can get 100.

| Went to WOG and ran around. I didn't really think it was prudent to try to do a hard workout tonight, so I didn't. Ran a short viola loop fora warmup and then ran the 8x400 workout with Cheryl at her pace (about 2 min), which was a nice way to have company and do a not boring, varied pace recovery run. | ||

| Really light trotting around in the warm-up area with the map. I had a lot of energy this morning, feeling pretty pumped and ready to rock the long. I realized last night that I was totally over my fear and loathing of long courses. | ||

| A really nice day. Felt really good physically and mentally, and managed to stay focused and push through the course. I think the cautious approach from yesterday rubbed off on me, because despite the much higher visibility I didn't hesitate to pick good attackpoints, stick to them, and take the approach into the control as slowly as I needed to. It felt good to keep nailing the controls, and I had good flow transitioning leg to leg.
Had two small errors - not pushing high enough on 5 and pushing too high on 13, but they were little problems and quickly corrected. Started second, three minutes behind Pavlina, not expecting to see her ahead of me and hoping not to see anyone else behind me. Much to my surprise, saw her popping into the woods across the power line on the way to 8 and I'm pretty sure I did a double take. I probably had some kind of really confused look on my face as I searched my memory to see if I'd maybe skipped a control. Passed her on the way to 9 and didn't see anybody else until Hillary passed me with three controls to go. A lot of people seemed to really hate the woods today. I can't say it was awesome terrain, but I liked it. I guess I didn't mind the rocky ground, and I thought all the pockets of greener stuff and mish-mash of trails and the section of buildings and streets made it interesting. And often the woods were fun to run through. It probably helps that I was having a good run, and also that I didn't think it was hot. (Wimps.) Sam at the top again in 69:31... so I'm still a ways back. But third US today was a good reward for a run that felt good.

| Spent a lot of time thinking about how slowly I needed to go, and how I wasn't going to beat anyone on speed, and how important my compass was going to be... and I have no idea what happened on the way to the first control. I thought I was being careful, but I guess I was checking off features that were a bit too vague. I also did things like think, "there should be a permanent control marker up ahead to my right", then looked for it, didn't see it, and decided it was too small to worry about if I didn't see it. Then I saw features that didn't make sense - a small pond, for instance - stopped to figure out what was going on, but then just kept going without figuring it out. Somehow I ended up past the control but south of the 5th control, right near Angelica's trajectory towards the sixth. Went to check out where she had come from and used that to attack 1. What a mess! Six minutes lost at least, as while I was flailing about Viktoria punched and passed me.
That seemed to knock some sense into me, and the next few went fine. Caught back up to Viktoria around the 6th control and we were more or less together through 10, she mostly pulling ahead. Managed to spike 11 and 12, thought I'd been able to get ahead, but then bungled 13. So did she, so of course that's when Sam shows up and showed us up. Ran as hard as I could manage for the last two controls, but those two were way gone. Even though I did manage to navigate okay after the first control, even now looking at the map I have a really hard time visualizing much of the terrain. I think I spent a lot more time than usual looking at my compass and map, and so I don't remember that much of what I saw. Whatever it is, I need to orienteer in that kind of stuff a few more times before I can say that it doesn't scare me anymore. 6th in TT results, I think, with Sam first in 37:26.

| Well, no disasters, which is always a good thing, but lots of running arond things hastily and a few instances of gong right by the control. It wasn't so much speed that was the issue in this sprint as speed at which I can navigate cleanly. I haven't run very many sprints that were tricky enough to be that kind of challenge, but this was definitely one of those. Prbabky the most challenging.
A very nice map and a very good course, overall downhill, which means I had more energy for faster running... Which led to more small mistakes. Not the run I wanted to have today, but at least it was fair and fun. I feel like I've plateaued (is that how that's spelled?).

| On to base to the track for some fitness tests. It had been widely advertised that the gym would be closed today for a dedication ceremony (it will no longer be "the new gym"), but no one had mentioned that the track would be, too. Luckily we hadn't started the run when the cops showed up to kick people off - one guy was in the middle of his test and had to stop! So we moved to the road by the flightline instead. Couldn't understand why we couldn't use the track, especially two hours before the ceremony, until we saw that they were using the infield as a helo landing zone during the ceremony. They should have just said so... | ||

| Running home from work. First, the power went out while I was trying to wrap stuff up before the weekend. Then I discovered that I had a flat on my bike. No tools or tubes, and I was the last to leave to squadron, so I had no choice but to run home. Not a bad experience, especially since it's downright chilly for May. Almost got thunderstormed on, too, but that would have made it a triple-play, which is just too much luck for one day. | ||

| New levels of ridiculousness last night at work. The most important impact was that I was able to come home hours earlier than planned, which made it possible to get to bed early enough to get up and run this morning. Made it out to the Broadway trailhead by 6:30, and it was a gloriously pleasant 73... when I started running. Got a little warm by the end, but nothing like yesterday. Legs still feel heavy, though.
There is now a sign on the trailhead board about increased cougar sightings in the area. They've even closed segments of trails that appear to go through cougar habitat for safety reasons. My route didn't take me quite to those segments, but I still ran without music for the first bit. I like to at least pretend that I'd be able to hear one coming. I don't know why I'm so much more freaked out about cougars than snakes, wolves, bears, or anything else, but I think it might have to do with the fact that the idea of having my neck snapped by what is essentially a large kitty just throws my world view for a loop.

Not so great - it was already about 90, but it felt even hotter and my legs were pretty stiff and sore from Sunday's activities. I ran as slowly as my body seemed to want to, but it still wasn't fun... and I came back three pounds lighter than when I left. Yikes.

| Ride home after a long day and in some heat. I think I will call today the first day of summer for two reasons: 1) it was the first day we hit the glorious temperature of 100F and 2) it was a weird day at work for me, with an abrupt change in office jobs. I haven't yet determined whether or not this is a good thing, but it seems appropriate to start a new season mentally with the new job. First thing I did was check to see if there was a good place to park my bike in the new office. (There is.)

Mile splits: 7:08 7:12 7:15 :47 First mile: For the first time ever in a road race I didn't start out too fast. Steady for the whole mile, and the hoards of people who screamed by me in the first couple hundred meters didn't look so good as I passed them along the way. Still feeling pretty good for the second mile, thought maybe I'd be able to go a bit faster for the last mile+. Picked it up for the first half of the third mile only to crash for the last bit. Ended up with a 7:15, but that's deceptive, as the last half was certainly much slower. Finished with :47 for a 22:22. A PR on a warm day, so I am happy about that. However, all signs point to the idea that I should be able to run this distance significantly faster right now (under 22?). I dunno. Not much to do about it except work harder towards anti-slow. Also second in my age group, behind (probably way behind) Jess. This was totally and completely unexpected, but quite cool, especially since the prize (a tile) was unique and displayable.

| Green course at Bear Wallow. Steep. High altitude. Slippery. Lots of climb. Pretty fun anyway. Too bad the map stinks.
Since it's a really slow area and there's not much to the map, you don't have to think very fast. So not much to screw up, except I did. Minor goof in not seeing the left route choice on the third leg. I'm sure I would have taken that route had I considered it, but I don't think it would be that much better. Then muffed up six - a parallel confusion based on an amazing assortment of cliffs and boulders that are not on the map. I felt like I hadn't gone far enough to be at the feature, but there was my visual attackpoint: a cliff on the edge of a little spur, with a collection of boulder fields below. I wouldn't have put controls down there without adding a few dozen 2m+ rock features to the map, but that's just me. No other problems, and it was fun to be orienteering in the coolness of the top of the mountain. Map.

| Easy run around da hood with seabass (until she bailed after ~20 minutes). We didn't get out the door until 9, so it was a bit warm. We both felt very dead legged, probably because of all the sleep the past two days - or for me the past day. I got home from work at about 6 yesterday, pretty tired, but it really hit me when I sat down to get my boots off. I managed to stagger into the bedroom and then three hours later I woke up on my bed, still in uniform, wondering what had happened to my Friday night.

?Viola loop warmup ?4x strides ?6x200/200 - didn't take splits, but I them all in the low 40s ?Reverse Viola loop warmdown They're doing a controlled burn over on Agua Caliente. Neat to watch when the wind was blowing away from the city (all day while I was shooting the rifle today) but not so nice when the wind was blowing towards the city (during WOG). It shifted towards the end of the workout, so it wasn't too bad. In most excellent news, I appear to be un-sick and germ free. Detailed analysis of my ill feelings for the past week have led me to conclude that I most likely did have some kind of bug Fri - Mon-ish and that I failed to hydrate properly while sick and losing lots of fluids. Yesterday while flying I had a massive headache; unsolicited descriptions of my appearance included "pale", "terrible" and "really awful". When I got home I was going to run but felt sick again, so instead I took some more vitamin-I and drank a few liters of liquid. I felt much better this morning.

| Today's lesson: do not eat a Luna Bar immediately before a speed workout, no matter how hungry I am, even if I think I'm going to collapse if I don't eat it. Seriously.
Back to WOG for the first time in a while. Felt really nice to be there, although part of that might have been the remarkable weather - 70s with a cool breeze and the smell of rain! °2 laps warmup (~8:40) °2x strides (stopped to let my digestive system rest while people continued) °3x(200H + 200E + 600H + 200E + 200H + 400E) Pace not specific - just something quick. I did about 45s for the 200s and about 2:29 for the 600s. I successfully completed the heart of the workout, but really, really had to stop as soon as that was done. I stood around for a while to see if I'd be able to get in some easy running after a rest, but no way. Stomach is still churning two hours later. I don't know what I was thinking - I can eat a lot of things before running, but not if I'm going to run hard. Maybe some day I'll learn. Shot the 9mm today. My shooting was not very spectacular today, but the wildlife was - we had to pause during the practice round to wait for the instructors to shoo away a Gila Monster that had wandered into the range. I've never seen one in the 'wild' before... it's no wonder they're protected, they must be pretty dumb to hang out at the wrong end of a shooting range.

| Went to Estabrook and ran an old orange course. Practiced knowing what came ahead by deliberately describing to myself what I should be seeing (even if it was a really simple leg) and then looking for it. I bet if I did this out loud it would be even more fun.
Mami and sis came, too, and we all took maps. I was mean and took the 1:10 one because a) it had the hardest course on it and b) I like 1:10. Unfortunately, mami took a compass without a magnifier and forgot her reading glasses in the car, so she had a hard time reading the map and ended up out way past rendezvous time. Caroline did actually look at the map a bit, but mostly she seemed to just collect leaves and sticks.

| In Sudbury for the weekend for a wedding (and Mother's Day, of course). I'm running out of unmarried high school friends, which means we're going to run out of reasons to have these parties/reunions, which in turn means that the pressure is on. Next year we at least have grand plans for a joint 30th birthday party (well, no actual plans yet, I'm pushing for Buenos Aires!), but after that we'll need more weddings. We all had fun, but most of us were really tired and actually left before they kicked us out. (!) I think we're aging prematurely.
Felt more than under the weather on the flight out last night, but that seemed to be the worst of it. Not sure if it's a bug I picked up in Honduras or what, but that explains why I felt off on Friday morning. This morning took two different I medicines and called myself good for a workout. I felt okay; not great, but not really sick. Then met Sam, Ross, and Jeff at Prospect Hill for some o training. Jeff drew up a control-picky course and we ran five controls at a time. I didn't feel like I could orienteer - most of the time I had no problem getting to the control, I just felt like I had to do it really slowly in order to read and understand the map. Too much time on simple and easy to read maps and not enough harder practice.

| Next weekend is the Tucson 5000, a road race that I have planned in advance and would like to run well. So, I decided to use today's monthly D-M Fitness Center 5k as a pace trial. I've been having trouble with pace, so my goal today was to run the first mile in 7 minutes and see how I felt after that. The idea was to give me a feel for what would be appropriate next week and I thought 7 would be a good starting pace.
I ran the first mile in 6:58, so at least I did what I'd set out to do. Second mile was 7:07 (hmm) and the last split was 8:22, which is about 7:35 pace - I was dying. I didn't even have any zip for the last few yards to the clock, no finishing kick at all. It didn't feel as painful as I thought it should, but I just couldn't move any faster. Today, at least, 7:00 was too fast for the first mile. So, I'm not sure what these means for next weekend, the 'real' race. I believe I was not optimally prepared for today - not much warmup, digestive troubles before the start, poor hydration, lots of travel recently, etc., but I'm not sure how much faster I could expect to run if I am physically well rested in a week. It seems like 7's are too fast, even though I find that hard to believe. I'll have to think about it. (And yes, this is just a fun diversion from TT prep... duh) On the positive side, this is a PB for 5k and I was the first woman and about sixth or seventh overall (out of around 100). Obviously it was an overwhelmingly male crowd, this being an Air Force base, but apparently not a very fast crowd. Unfortunately, I didn't win a pedometer in the post-race raffle draw.

| Got up a little earlier today and ran basically two of the loops that I did the other day with the perimeter road. It rained last night but didn't stick around long enough to make the run cool. It was cloudy though, and that helped. I think a little bit of rain just makes the burning stuff smokier. Today the haze and smoke was worse - or at least I felt it more than I did the past few days. I guess the farmers stop burning when the rains really start, which means if it's not one thing for visibility, it's another. At least this time of year.
Later that morning three of us took the bus to Tegucigalpa. The bus drops you off at a mall, which isn't really what we were interested in. So we stopped by the Intercontinental, stole a map, and then tried to figure out what to see. Turns out there's not that much to see in Tegus, which became apparent when the boy at the hotel and the eventual taxi driver/guide we hired said as much independently. Didn't matter much since we just had the one day, so we got a little tour of the main points in the city as well as a look at the giant Jesus on the hill and the adjacent national park. It was good to get out and see it, though next time (if there is a next time) I think I'll take their advice and head out to one of the smaller towns to see what the rest of Honduras is like.

| We flew early in the morning to get more stuff to El Salvador. We took a bunch of stuff over for a disaster relief exercise - a solar-powered water purification/power station thing and a massive amount of MREs.
Waited until sunset and then went for a quick run around the populated areas of the base. Not too many places to go to at night, but at least it was fairly pleasant. I mean, it was hot and muggy, but at least I wasn't being burnt to a crisp.

| Ended the run at the gym, which is not air conditioned. Again, better than being fried by the sun. Did some upper body work, making some attempt to at least appear to care about my PFT score. Took it pretty easy since it's been a really long time. Still found it difficult to lift my arms in the shower. | ||

| Got up at a reasonable hour (7am) in an attempt to avoid the heat and went for an exploratory run. If I avoided any heat, I{m really afraid of what it would be like to run in the middle of the day. I don{t think it was actually that hot, but the humidity in combination with the smoky haze made it much less pleasant than a Tucson run in the heat. Certainly not the worst I{ve run in, but not exactly fun.
One of the local military types had suggested running along the east perimeter road, so I went looking for that. It's a dirt road that runs along the wall of the base, and it was completely deserted. We're not allowed to run along the western perimeter road, or maybe we are during certain hours when it's guarded and only if you have a buddy - that's not really clear. I guess there have been some scary incidents over there. Needless to say, that made me a little nervous running along the road and not seeing anyone except for one Honduran guard crouched in the shade of the wall. Eventually I got back to buildings and realized I'd done what was probably a pretty common run, but I should just do it earlier. So far so good here. After landing yesterday I went into town with Leah, who was the only other person from the crews who wanted to go off base. The rest preferred to stay in the hooches and drink, even though Leah's crew was only here for a night. Unfortunately, May Day isn't the best day for eating out, apparently, but we did find a place that was open, tasty, and cheap. Today we flew some cargo to El Salvador. It was a long and frustrating day with only a little bit of flying (El Salvador isn't very far...) and I anticipate more of the same in the next week.

| Flew from DM to Soto Cano, Honduras. Long day. And this keyboard is a little funny.
Been depressingly busy the past couple of days and hardly slept, so no workouts. Major suckage.
