Event: 2006 North American Championships (Golden Leaf Orienteering Fest)

Orienteering race 19:15 [4]*** 2.7 km (7:08 / km) +15m 6:56 / km
ahr:187 max:197 spiked:13/16c slept:6.0 shoes: Asics Trail
I was looking forward to the sprint because I know that I have gotten faster, especially in this flat, urban terrain, and felt confident that I could handle the sprint navigation at that speed. And I did feel very good physically today. I started hard, and I expected to feel like I needed to slow down a lot by the end, but never did. In fact, I'm sure I could have pushed even harder, I guess I need to adapt to my growing speed (?).

At the beginning and the end of the course I was able to keep in total contact with the map and orienteer well. The problem was in the middle, when I ran twice around a building that I shouldn't have even run around once. I got distracted and momentarily lost track of buildings and ran past number 8, one extra building. I ended up hitting number 9 on the other end of it. Thinking that I must have just missed 8, I ran back the way I came (which was still the wrong building) and all the way back around it. The whole time I was trying to force myself to make the map fit. It didn't. When I got around to the other side of the building I saw what I had done and snagged 8. Thinking that 9 shouldn't be a problem, since I'd already been there, I just raced out and ran to where I remembered it to have been. Only I ran right past it to some other control and had to turn around to get it. Between the two, probably almost two (2) minutes lost!

The interesting thing is that even with that atrocious mixup, I'm pretty sure this is the fastest that I've ever orienteered (both in min/km and in actual sustained running+navigating speed). Keeping the few smaller mistakes but throwing out those 2 minutes gives me a time of 17:15, which I would have been happy with (the top three were around 15 min). I can live with one bad route choice (to 1, which I thought was on the other side of an uncrossable wall) and the hesitation on the way to 5 (thought the wall was uncrossable). It's really, really frustrating to do something so out there when I felt primed to do well. This was probably the most disappointed and upset that I've ever been at the end of an orienteering course. Pissed probably covers it well. Angry and wanting to do really well tomorrow in the middle!
Running warm up/down 15:00 [1]

Split between before and after. Legs felt good before, during, and after, so I'm not sure that more warm up was necessary even though it seemed too short.

Sprint 3 - Splits

Thursday Oct 5

Running (road) 29:20 [2]3.0 mi (9:47 / mi)
ahr:166 max:182 rhr:54 slept:9.0 weight:141.5lbs shoes: Kayano XI - white
Blerg. Morning run to the water tower. Legs felt like I'd raced on them yesterday. Did one 20s pickup in the middle to see if I could wake them up, but no dice - just tired me out. After the run my hamstrings were all sore, as if I had just raced a 400 or something. I hope I don't feel like this tomorrow. MHR was on the high side this morning, too, though it's been a while since I checked so who knows if 48-50 would still be "normal".

141.5 is the official number from my digital scale. However, in an act of true desperation, I weighed myself on an analog scale that I haven't used in a year, just to see if maybe my dig scale was stuck or something. (Can you smell the desperation?) And I clocked in at exactly 140 pounds. That doesn't necessarily mean anything, but it makes me feel a little better. I definitely feel as if I have been quite diligent at this for several weeks with little to show for it. I'm willing to chalk it up to the famous weight-loss plateau phenomenon, and I'll keep at it...after this weekend.

A little clarification: yeah, I made progress, but most of it came at the beginning (which is to be expected) and I've been especially diligent the past 3 weeks, with almost no change. I'd be happy with 2-3 lbs every 3 weeks, but maybe that's too much to expect? I don't think my body should be so uncooperative when it's still lugging around over 20% fat. ;-)

At least it's consistent.

Despite not really changing anything from the past two weeks, I am really totally physically exhausted and hungry. So I think that means that maybe I *should* change something. I think it's best to totally relax today. And go out for dinner.

Tuesday Oct 3

Running (road) 40:00 [2]4.2 mi (9:31 / mi)
ahr:154 max:169 slept:5.0 weight:142lbs shoes: Kayano XI - white
Another night run, east flightline. Basically the same as yesterday, just not as late. No crazy woman this time. And definitely did not feel as zippy tonight. Downright worn out. Stayed up late last night to finish some homework and then a busy day today. Just felt really tired.

17 days, and only 4 of those are work days!

Two more days until the NAOCs and, barring any dehydrating runs the night before, it doesn't seem possible for me to hit 140. Nor a good idea to actually try. We'll see how close I get. And then I'll have to find a new challenger for the next 5 pounds. :-)

Monday Oct 2

Running (road) 28:30 [2]3.0 mi (9:29 / mi)
ahr:171 max:186 slept:6.0 weight:142lbs shoes: Kayano XI - grey
Yuck. Icky morning (t=73, dp=72), legs felt heavy, didn't get much sleep. That's what I get for arguing with people about sexuality education. It gets me so riled up, and it's such a stupid reason to lose sleep. I should probably give up and agree that the "we bought you at Toys 'R Us" approach is appropriate for young kids. Argh. 4x30 second pickups.

18!

Running (road) 34:00 [3]3.9 mi (8:43 / mi)
ahr:162 max:180 shoes: Kayano XI - grey
Late night run along east flightline. Warmer but (slightly) drier than this morning, and legs felt great. Went a little quicker than usual, just for kicks, but mostly because I'm not planning on doing anything too tough before the weekend.

On my way back some lady driving from the stables slowed to my speed to yell, "It's dangerous to be out here without a light!" To which I replied, "Okay, thanks!"

She continued to drive at my pace and said, "I'm really serious, we hit rattlesnakes out here all the time!"
"Thanks!"
"You really shouldn't be out here without a light, it's dangerous!"
"Thanks!"

I'm not sure what she wanted me to do, pull a magic flashlight out of my foot? I appreciate her concern for my safety, but two things made her seem silly. 1) The moon was crazy bright and lit up the road like gangbusters. 2) I run or ride on that road almost every day and I have never ever seen a snake, alive or dead. She must be hitting them and then taking them home for the grill.

That was the entertainment for the evening. Also on a positive note, the run cured the headache that I had. I'm almost certain it was from exceeding the recommended daily allowance of DDP. I won't do that again any time soon. (Or maybe at least not until tomorrow.)
Strength/Core (stretching) 12:00 [1]
Very much needed.

Sunday Oct 1

Cycling (road) 1:10:00 [3]18.75 mi (3:43 / mi)
ahr:158 max:173 slept:8.0 weight:142lbs
Randolph x 1.5. Evening, typical wind from the SE, about 88 and 63, felt pretty good. Went a little faster today - same route and conditions as Wed, but 5 min faster. The consistency of riding a few times a week, even if all easy, certainly pays off. I want bike commuting to feel effortless...

Getting in to the teens now, 19 to go! It's a good thing, too, because "fall" is showing no signs of arriving, what with more 90+ degree weather forecasted all week. Canadia should be refreshing.

Hot diggidy. I thought I was going to be a little high this morning (based on how I felt), but instead it seems that the week's efforts have decided to wait until Saturday to show themselves.

Off to Bastrop for some setting/vetting.

Orienteering 2:15:00 [2]***
shoes: Integrators (Red)
Putting out bags and checking others at Bastrop. About half the time walking, the other half running, and all the time involved paying very careful attention to the map, so a useful session, to be sure. Pretty warm out, about 90F and stickier than it should be (dp about 70?). I was excited to be in the pine woods because it makes you feel like you're not in Texas. But all you have to do is trip over a prickly pear and fall into some wait-a-minute vines to remind you that you're not actually up north. That place is thicker than it seems like it should be.

20 days! If all goes as planned, this should be my last Sat in Texas. snif.
C • Lucky you! 3
