| Day 1 at Morgan Territory for O in the Oaks. Really quite nice terrain, and I had a nice run - probably my best effort at a left-coast club meet. Goofed the first control (~30s) then had some continual ridiculousness on the second (1.5-2 min). Snapped out of it (or into it) after that and worked the rest pretty well.
This was a middle-style course and a lot of fun. I definitely found that I was able to handle the sections where the terrain was peppered with rock detail much better than I have in other places in the past. Legs felt pretty good and I was moving well the whole time. Probably should have pushed up just a few more of the hills: the first three were Penny and Marie-Cat somewhere over 47 and Ellyn (Alaska) just 30 seconds ahead of me.

| My glasses broke today (again), just before we started class. I squinted a lot. I think I have a "normal" backup pair and won't have to rely on a pair of BCGs for the weekend. I'm just glad they snapped today and not tomorrow!
And, in more significant news, it seems that somebody high up decided that I should not be in this training class. You know, the one I've been in for two weeks. I'm going to be in the next class, which *starts* on Nov 28th. It's not clear yet what I will be doing (no one has even officially told me this yet) but hopefully I'll have lots of time to play in the mountains. I'm just really glad that they lacked the foresight to delay me *before* leaving Texas.

| Ran with Melissa on the Rio Grande river trail, working on the run/walk thing. We did (basically) 5 min run, 30 sec walk. Thirty seconds is not very long, I feel like if I were going to run a long race with walk breaks, I'd want to do a long enough run to give me at least a minute or two of walking... 30s just flies by. We'll see what she comes up with.
Total time out about 64 minutes - one longer walk break after about 40 minutes. I was surprisingly not tired, despite getting up at 3:30am for 7 hours of class (done by 11:30!). First run in my new shoes. Felt great. Beautiful day, 60 and sunny. The river trail, at least up here, isn't as scenic as one would expect, but it's still a lot nicer than the road.

| Hiking 2:00:00 [1] | ||
| slept:6.0 shoes: Asics Trail | ||
| Hike up on top of the Sandias with Melissa. Original plan was to tram up for a hike and then tram down, but the tram is closed for fall mnx. So we drove all the way around to the 10k trailhead (so called because it roughly follows the 10,000' contour line, not because of its length). Took 10k south to the crest trail, up to the peak and back across and down to the car.
Not too strenuous except for the bit when we first got on the crest trail. Yikes! Going up steep stuff that high makes me feel quite out of shape. We did have awesome views from the crest, though, making it quite worth it. Weather was sweet, mid-30's until the sun went away, then it seemed to get colder quite quickly. Total time out there about 2:45. Came ridiculously close to hitting a deer on the way out. I drove very slowly the rest of the way down. Another yikes! At least now I'm tired enough to get to bed for my 3:30am wake up time tomorrow!

| Orienteering 1:01:00 [3]*** | ||

| Popped over to Cienega Canyon to retrieve some controls from Sunday's mini-rogaine. Since I was only doing a handful, and since I had "rest" time at each control as I untied them, I could move faster than on Sunday. So I used the time to practice reading on the run. Really nice afternoon, but getting a bit chilly up near ~8000 ft.
I've been contemplating getting a wrist/thumb compass, because when I started using a thumb compass I found it hard to "thumb" the map. So I ran a leg without a compass and found, much to my surprise, that my thumb is much bigger than the tip of my compass. I guess in the past couple of years I have learned well enough how to "thumb" with the tip of the compass, enough so that it's more precise than my thumb. Doesn't seem like I'm that good at keeping my place, but I guess I've gotten much better at it. Also confirmed my suspicions about the (mis)placement of two of the controls. Two out of a gazillion isn't a disaster. This weekend's BAOC event is possibly my last big O meet of the year. I'll have to come up with some super motivational goal to bring out the pUre aNiMAl EnErGY!!!! Yaaar!

| A failed attempt at trying to ride to and from base. Had a few little issues on the way down, including a non-cooperative front derailleur and some dude yelling, "Get a car!!" at me as he sped by at a particularly hairy intersection. I resisted the temptation to flip him off only because I didn't want to stoop to his level. But really I just wanted to kick the shit out of him.
The real problem was that I was not smart enough to bring a pump or spare tube or patch kit or anything with me. Ever since I started riding with these armadillo tires I just take a bike tool and a cell phone. Two flats in 3 or 4 years will help instill bad habits like that. So I got a flat about 2 miles onto the Rio Grande bike trail and had to call Jen to pick me up at the parking lot, which meant walking the bike trail back to the road. Some nice guy stopped to give me some air and I made it about a half mile on the bike before having to get off again. No big deal, but I was looking forward to the ride back up to the house. Hills! I think this was nature's subtle way of telling me that I haven't been careful lately. Going out to the Sandias for a several hour jaunt - alone and without telling anyone where I'm going - is not a good idea, especially as winter approaches. Getting stuck on a bike path with a flat is a very benign warning. I'll be a little more careful in the future about the mountains (and take bike supplies when I ride, too). Hamstrings (esp. right) sore from yesterday, as well as my upper back for some reason. Also feel constantly dehydrated or on the edge of sick. Maybe it was a good thing that I didn't ride for 3 hours.
