| Orienteering race 1:10:08 [4] ** | ||

| Tucson O club Hash-O meet at the U of A. This was approximately 5 zillion times more fun than I thought it would be. The course consisted of "hashing" legs that each led to a map with a control location circled (but not your current location). You copied the location on to your map (or memorized it) and then orienteered to the control. From there you followed the hash marks to the next map and so on, ten times. Since it was a staggered start event, the social and collaborative aspects of hashing were missing (though obviously people passed each other and clumped up a bit). It also added an element of luck, since you could end up going quite a ways down a bad trail all by yourself and have to turn around while the next guy makes a good guess or sees you coming back.
I didn't think I'd like it because of the luck element, and there were a few times when I said, "bastard!" under my breath at the end of particularly long bad trail (especially the ones on the top of parking garages), but it was still fun. It was also more fun because of the fact that your current location wasn't marked on the map, so you had to pay attention to the map the whole time. And it was a hell of a running workout, as it was long and you could run hard often. I started 2 and 4 minutes ahead of Brucker and Ludwig and they caught me pretty quickly in the beginning, as I tested out basically every bad trail. Eventually I had a streak of good guesses and dropped them both about halfway through, gaining a good 5 minutes on Ludwig and more like 10 on Brucker by the end of the course. Really pushing it at the end when I realized Ludwig was close to 4 minutes back and I had a chance to beat him. Knowledge of the campus certainly helped sometimes, especially with keeping track of where you were during the hashing legs. I was a little rusty in that respect, but couldn't have hurt. I think I ended up 2nd, only ~18 seconds behind Mark Everett. That's not likely to happen again soon, so I should make sure to celebrate hard now. ;-)

| Late evening run with Seabass around D-M, learning me the base a little bit. Really nice out (70s), though the whole darkness thing made it a little harder to see where stuff was.
Everything felt a little twingy, especially right hammy and left knee, but not in a bad way. Just in a "I feel neglected and you've been sitting in a car too long" kind of way.

| Hiking 45:00 [1] | ||
| shoes: Asics Trail Attack III | ||
This morning I called my new BFFL, the airman in San Antonio who's working out my paperwork issues, and he said my orders would probably be ready tomorrow, not today. So, realizing that I had another day to kill, I looked in my fridge. I saw this:
and decided to go out for a little adventure. Cranked up the Arctic Monkeys and headed up to the Jemez Mountains. I made several short stops at National Forest trailheads and picnic areas, Jemez State Monument and Valles Caldera National Preserve. And then a longer stop + hike at my final destination, Bandelier National Monument. I'd driven through here before from Los Alamos, but mostly in the dark. What I saw today was some pretty spectacular scenery (everywhere) and some really neat ruins (at the monuments). It was too bad that it was freakin' cold in the caldera. And that my right knee is tweaky, probably from that second running trip last night (no warm up, ran fast). I took some pictures. Stopped at Rudy's for dinner and watched the end of the tragic Red Sox game.

| Two separate evening trips out to the foothills with my camera. Not sure how much I actually spent running. A little chilly today, quite windy. Did lots of short spurts. | ||

Now you can see what I mean when I say Running in the foothills. Largely inspired by Spike and his O videos.

| Update: Almost had a fit today when I raced over to the squadron to pick up the (finally) new paperwork fax and saw that it said... "You have been selected for reassignment to Moody AFB, GA".
Okay, I did have a fit. Started making phone calls and everything. And then, as I shakily re-read all the forms again, I realized that the first six pages were the original screwup from before Fair Hill... and tucked away in the last page was a correction form, changing "Moody" to "Davis-Monthan" and "GA" to "AZ". So I *think* this is finally the right paperwork. I guess I have to actually sign the blasted thing that says I'm going to GA so that they can then officially change it. How screwed up is that? Anyway, have to call TX tomorrow morning to make sure. Only a day or two left, it seems... Chizz.

| Afternoon run in the foothills, after the rain cleared off... since I have no jackets or long-sleeved shirts here.
Pretty nice out, 50s and not too too much wind. Legs were a little unzippy today. Flat? I guess from yesterday. That would be cool. Felt okay to run, it was just like my legs were ignoring my brain inputs to move faster. Almost exactly the same HR info as yesterday, which makes me feel justified in "just" hiking up and down that ridge. :-)
