| Note | ||
| The plan today was to go hiking for a few hours in the afternoon once Seabass was recovered from her night shift. Sometime before 2pm I seem to have fallen asleep and did not wake up until I got a phone call at 6:45. Wow. I guess I needed it. A few hours of jazz and now I'm ready for bed again. Yikes.
I'm thinking Pahoehoe and Mica as kitty names, but Seabass has already gotten used to Rose and Clem so... yeah. Who knows.

| Running warm up/down (road) 5:00 [2] | ||
| shoes: Kayano XII (pink) | ||
| All I managed for a warm-up because it was quite warm enough, thank you very much. No cool-down because I'm quite sure running more would have necessitated puking. | ||

| Damnit damnit damnit.
This was a great race, it's unfortunate that it involved such shitty running on my part. It was not nearly as hot as expected - about 93 at the start, but that's still pretty warm. So I drank perhaps a little too much liquid a wee bit too close to the start. I actually had a good start, for once. At least as far as not gunning it from the gun. After that I guess I went a bit crazy. Paced myself well and checked my watch for speed after about a 1/4 mile - 7:25, perfectly reasonable. I decided to just hold that effort and not look at the watch again until the mile marker. I didn't take into account the hill (small incline, really) at the beginning of the course and I ended up running something like a 7:05 for the first mile. Felt pretty fast but I figured it was still a salvageable race. I started fading soon after and then the water consumption gods got their revenge and the stitch set in. Close to 8 minutes for mile 2 and just over for mile 3. Nothing left for the finish (50 sec) and I almost puked in the bushes in the plaza. I obviously need to try running a 5k where I forget about the time and really start easier. Probably end up being much faster. On the bright side, very cool event. Inaugural "Meet me Downtown" race, part of an effort to revitalize downtown Tucson. Sat evening race through downtown, where no one ever goes. Finish in the plaza with free food and live band followed by the awards ceremony in the Fox theater... followed by a free movie viewing. It's too bad it's such a hassle to put on races downtown because this would make a great monthly event. Saw yet another person that I recognized from 4+ years ago, which is the second in three days. The trend continues. Met up with some friendly WOGgers for the movie. Got a Club Congress glass for coming in 3rd in my age group. Too bad they messed up and I was actually 4th. Some schmuck missed out on free stuff.

Wore a white shirt. Different gate guard.

| So there's a drive-in movie theater in Tucson. I just realized that I live within walking distance. I felt excitement. And then felt stupid for feeling excited about the thought of being able to walk to a drive-in movie theater. | ||

| Cycling (road) 20:00 [2] 4.5 mi (4:27 / mi) | ||
| Ride in to work.
I've been riding in wearing the clothes I wear under my flight suit - typically mesh shorts and a black t-shirt. Today the gate guard (usually very friendly) told me I needed to start wearing a brighter color. I guess the bright, reflective messenger bag isn't enough for the daytime (at night I go all out - reflective vest, reflective pieces on my bag, bright bike lights). Guess I'm going to have to start packing one more thing.

| Rocky-style workout. I ran while Seabass skated. Now I know how she feels when we run together. She was just doodling along, chatting it up, and I was huffing and puffing to keep up. The good news is that that was the most pleasant hard workout in a long time. Not sure if it was quite fast enough for tempo, but it was a good hard steady run, and I haven't done much of that lately. | ||

| Ride home. Did fly but we broke at absolutely the most perfect moment and had to call it a day.
Usually I round down my commute time to 20min (from ~23ish) to account for lights and such. But today it actually only took about 17 to ride home, even with a bunch of lights. Crazy! Playing with kitties!!! !!

| Tired from a productive house weekend but desperately wanting some outdoor activity, we dragged ourselves up Mt Lemmon for a little hike at altitude. Nice and cool up there, must have been in the upper 70s at about 7500'. Hiked Sunset - Marshall Gulch - Aspen - Sunset loop. Most of the burn areas are growing nicely and there's a section of the Aspen trail that looks more like a rain forest than Arizona alpine. I hauled some extraneous weight and still couldn't convince Seabass to run at all. Maybe that's because it was a taunting kind of pleading. Next time.
After the hike I pulled out of the parking lot, threw the car in neutral, and coasted down the mountain to the first stop sign - approximately 17 miles. There was one small rise that I almost didn't make it over. Got down to about 2 or 3 mph before clearing and cruising down the rest of the way.
| Note | ||
| Not much training this weekend but quite productive otherwise. A sampling: painted the roof, fixed the dryer, installed a closet system, acquired and placed an entertainment center, unpacked essentially everything that was left and, perhaps most importantly, adopted two kitties.
No pictures yet as they don't come home until tomorrow (minus their ovaries and what not). They are from the same litter, two black females bottle-raised by a volunteer foster mom. She gave them satisfactory names (Rose and Clementine) but of course we are going to give them a chance to get ridiculous alternative names. And then change them again if their personalities suggest something striking. Rejected name pairs include: Bill and Al; Picard and Janeway; Apples and Oranges; Green Eggs and Ham; Sam and Hill; Boojum and Jabberwock. Suggestions welcome. All namesake bribes will be considered.
