| First leg of the Venla relay. Royally screwed up the first control, was 821st or thereabouts at the first radio control. Spent the rest of the course passing people and progressively orienteering better. Ended in 691st, setting up Team DVOA for some more increases. ;-)
The navigation was fun, not nearly as difficult as the stuff we saw earlier in the week... but quite different because of all the people and trails. The rest of Team DVOA is gone now, but I think they may have succeeded in converting me permanently.

| Orienteering 1:30:00 [2] | ||
| One more model map. Jogged and walked around part of the course, meeting up with Sandy and Sandy at most of them. I think my legs would have been better off with rest, but it's nice to get in more practice. I took it really easy, but after 2 races and 2 model maps stints yesterday my legs feel pretty used.
Running the first leg for Team DVOA Venla tomorrow. Wuhu! I gather there's some way to watch/keep track from home. I have friends who don't have any clue what I'm actually doing over here in Finland, so it might be nice to give them an idiot-proof link to follow along. Any help?

| First World Cup wrap-up:
I'm obviously happy with my runs, since my goal was just to finish them and have fun, hopefully learning from the experience. I'm very surprised that I never felt nervous at all. That's nice, but maybe some nerves would be beneficial. For the qual I was really pleased with my flow, though there is some room for improvement. Mostly it's speed, and some route choice. For the final I was definitely not at the same level. I could not keep up with my running speed, not with route choice decisions nor with actual continual navigation. It's a miracle I was able to go as fast as I did and not screw something up royally. There's a lot of gain to be made on a course like this, so it's a good point for improvement. Time behind the winner in the qual (~43%, I think... is my math right?) was much better than I could have hoped for. WRE points for the final are better than I've ever earned, though still not very high... Okay, time to go away again.

| Running warm up/down 10:00 [1] | ||
| Warming up for the qualification race. The staging area was basically a small patch of gravel next to what appeared to be the local illegal dumping grounds. I ran circles around trash and stretched a little. Oddly, still not at all nervous. I never did feel at all anxious. I think there are several reasons for that. | ||

| WC Sprint qualification race. I met both of my goals... but not without a bit of drama.
First, about the course and my run. It was mostly urban, lots of controls and quick map reading, very fun overall (goal #1 was to have fun). I felt very good orienteering, I stayed focused and read very well on the run. I wasn't clean, I'm sure I lost several seconds in many places, but it was a solid run (goal #2 was to have a run I could be proud of). Things were going well for me... then I looked at my Emit brick around control 14 and noticed that I was one split behind. I will not transcribe the thoughts that went through my head immediately. Needless to say, I had a quick moment of panic. But I knew that I had punched each control well and that the pin pricks would show through on the paper and there was nothing else to do just then. I put it past me and finished the course fine. At the finish I downloaded and I got the dreaded "come this way". They said I had missed a control, number 10, and showed it to me on the map. The spectator control, at the corner of a building, which I had most definitely punched. They then checked the paper and determined that I had *not* punched it. Obviously I was pretty upset because not only was I certain that I had punched it, but I knew that the entire North American cheering section could vouch for me but that that would mean squat in the rulebooks. I moped over to the crowd and Vadim demonstrates that he captured my punch on camera. [Photo should be inserted here sometime...] I shrug, because I know it's not going to get me reinstated. But he insists and shows his picture to the fancy IOF official and all the important people huddle and consult rule books and say "Nope, your sorry ass is disqualified." Only they said it in Finnish so this is a loose translation, at best. I continue to mope until I have an idea - I find someone else who ran the W3 course and look at her paper card. She seems to be missing the same prick, even though she clearly punched (she had a split). So we take it back to the officials and they insist that they see a teeny tiny little point on her paper. She says she doesn't, and if it was there it was pretty damn hard to see. My argument was that there may have been something wrong with the mechanical backup at the control, but they seemed to be afraid of the idea and I stayed DQ'd. So I mope back over to the spectator control to see if I can get a look at the damn thing from a distance. While we're there one of the officials comes over and tells us that I have been reinstated - the looked at the paper again and could see it. I'm happy again and stay so for a while, checking the results board for my time. About 30 minutes of this and they still hadn't changed me from DQ. I investigate and it turns out that when they told me that I had been reinstated they were just lying. In actuality it was a British runner who had been reinstated (same problem, different control) and the official got us mixed up. I can see how "USA" and "Great Britain" might look the same on the back of a uniform, so I forgive him. I'm DQ'd once again, though of course since I had never been reinstated in the first place it was only "again" in my mind. While explaining the rules to me (again) they pulled out my paper punch to show me that there's no prick. They say, "don't worry, you can still run the B final." And I say, "I don't care about the B final, I just want a finish time." I ask to see my paper punch and point out a faint prick. One of the young officials takes a look (squinting) and says, "Yes, it's there, and it's in the right place." This seems to have prompted the head official to look a little more carefully and, eventually, concede that there was a faint prick. Imagine that, evidence that I punched a control that no one argues I punched! Justice at last. I have a finish time. Phew. This whole thing took place over perhaps an hour, so it was a bit of a rollercoaster. I'm glad it happened today. Now I've got my international race horror story out of the way. ;-)

| B Final. Time is correct now - much faster than I had thought originally. This was much harder than the morning's race. Especially in the woods. I was not running at full speed but yet was quite definitely running faster than I could read the map. ;-)
I also spent a long time at each control punching. I'm sure I would have been in under 23 min if I hadn't, but I wasn't going to take any chances!

| As gluttons for punishment, we went back out for more of Jagge's course this morning. Walked through a bunch of the controls with Sandy. Of course, we were reading a lot more of the detail than I would do on the run, but at least we were finding the controls without much problem. It's still tough stuff, but I think seeing it was good preparation for this weekend. | ||

| Up in Lapua now for the true festivities - tomorrow's World Cup sprint and Venla+Jukola on Saturday. I walked (and jogged a bit of) the model event for the WC qualification course with Sandy and Vadim. I felt much more in my element on that urban terrain... though of course I have a history of running circles around buildings and getting stuck behind uncrossables, so it's still not perfect. ;-)
Not nervous yet. Probably because I can't help but think that this is some sort of joke we're playing on the IOF... As in, "Teehee, look who we sent to compete!" (I'm kidding... mostly.) Picked up Chris today in Tampere, so now we're 6. Veronica continues to be our best orienteer.

| Clem and Dasha abandoned us for Sweden, but Vadim and Veronica joined us from Lithuania, so we are still 5. Training on a map not too far from our hotel today. First time on a Finnish map and I think I'm in deep doo-doo. I couldn't find shit. (Er, I guess I can't be deep in it if I can't find it, but you know what I mean.)
Okay, so I did find a few controls. But not without a lot of trouble. The first one was pretty simple and I could go straight and read all (the few) features and found it pretty quickly. I think that was a bad start because then I tried that technique on the next few and it failed miserably. Things I learned today: -there are only subtle differences between bare rock and knoll -there are only subtle differences between cliff and sloped rock -there are only subtle differences between white and marsh -there are only subtle differences between white and bare rock The take home lesson? Simplify and use contours and big features (large marshes and ponds, mostly) as much as possible. Duh. I think NOT using my magnifier is a better idea, even though then I can't really read on the run. It forces me to look at the bigger picture AND to slow down to read... which I should be doing anyway. I should note that Jagge set up the training for us, which was very nice. I think it was excellent training, and I wouldn't have it any other way, personal suckage included. We all decided that we wanted another crack at this before heading north tomorrow. And then I should probably start mentally preparing for that World Cup race thing that I'm supposed to run on Thursday.

| Evening run along the water near Helsinki. (Yes, we're in Finland now.) Ran towards the city with Sandy and then she turned around a few minutes before I did... almost didn't catch her! Tom ran around wildly for a many extra minutes.
I don't know if this is typical Finnish summer weather, but it was absolutely divine. Nice to see trees, too.
