Sunday Aug 5

Note
This is why I don't like running in the mountains with storms in the area... and haven't run at Sabino at all during the monsoon season.
Orienteering race 1:22:47 *** 9.9 km (8:22 / km) +210m 7:34 / km

Much better today. Almost clean. Almost.

I felt a lot better. Full night of sleep, no cramps, it was cloudy, and I guess a day of acclimation really helps with the altitude. I felt like I could actually run decently today. Not that running uphill was easy, but at least I wasn't bent in half, huffing my way up at a slow walk. Lost ~30 seconds, maybe less, on 13 when I re-folded my map for the next leg a bit prematurely and sort of lost track of where I was on the flat ridge-top. Other than that it was really quite nice orienteering - not terribly technical terrain, but neither was yesterday and I managed to goof that up for several minutes of errors.

As usual, I feel like I can see where to improve much more from today's run than from yesterday's. The course was nice, definitely fun to run, but there weren't any of those major "holy crap" route choice decisions to make - probably explains why I didn't have any bigger issues. ;-)

Obviously, on a course like this that allows for super fast running, I really feel out of shape. I've gained a bit of mass and haven't been running much over the summer. The latter is sort of on purpose but the former is entirely unacceptable. So, that hasn't changed - I need to get faster. WOG starts up again soon, maybe I can get the schedulers to keep from flying me every Tues and Thurs night! (ha! yeah right)

The next observation is the difference in flow and concentration, both between yesterday and today (dramatic difference!) and between the great controls and the adequate ones today. I'll have to write up my leg comments to figure out why some felt really good and others were just satisfactory.

First on F-21+ again. That doesn't happen very often.
C • Nice work! 3

Day 2 Red - Splits

Saturday Aug 4

Running warm up/down (trail) 12:00 [2]
shoes: Integrators (orange)
Warming up before the start. Mostly this was running to the finish and back to get an e-punch stick from Valerie since I seem to have forgotten mine. Busted phone, paperweight for a computer, and no e-stick. Awesome.
C • I don't think that's what awes... 5
Orienteering race 1:18:42 *** 8.5 km (9:16 / km) +210m 8:14 / km

Day 1 Red. I was all ready to attack each control, but I'm not sure I really managed that. I was sort of huffing and puffing into most of the controls. I was tired and felt crappy but the orienteering went okay. Just okay, nothing great, nothing disastrous. Especially bobbled stuff at the end. I think definitely affected by the altitude, though I'm sure everyone else was, too. People also complained of "heat". I didn't notice that it was hot, but it was sunny and perhaps I was also affected by that.

Looking at the map now I see that I lost measurable time on 2, 3, 6, 11, 13, 16, and 17. Wow! Most were probably less than 30s, but that's over 3 minutes just with small silly stuff.

First in F-21+, with Kissy only 45s behind, putting the pressure on for day 2. She started 4 min in front and I caught glimpses of her on some of the long, open legs, but never got close. This has nothing to do with bad behavior on Kissy's part, though rumors abound that there was much bad behavior to be had.

Day 1 Red - Splits

Friday Aug 3

Event: 2007 USOF Convention and Colorado 5-Days

Running (road) 13:00 [2]
shoes: Kayano XII (pink)
Group (with a capital 'g') run as part of Group PT. How freakin' thrilling.
Other Cardio (Ultimate football) 30:00
shoes: Kayano XII (pink)
Silly game of "ultimate football" against the OSS. Silly because I find it no fun at all to play games with no regard for strategy. Do people really think it's fun to just scramble around and throw hail marys?

Oh yeah, and never pass the ball the girl, either. Wait, that's right, I forgot. Women can't fly, and they can't catch, either.
C • the girl 3
Note
My phone and MacBook are still dead. Woe is me.

Really busy at work. I need goals for this weekend. Run clean? That's not very specific. I'll have to think about it.
C • How about "attack each control" 1

Thursday Aug 2

Note
Oy. My phone is broken and my computer's HD seems to have died and Seabass is out of town (with her computer and phone), leaving me without communication at home. HD died conveniently just days after the end of my warranty. The same thing happened to my sister's MacBook a few days ago. WTF? And before people ask, I do backup my machine on an external drive... but not frequently enough.

Flying to Portland and back today, at least hopefully "and back" this time since I really don't want to miss going to CO this weekend.
C • I hope the "and back" part wor... 4

Cycling (road) 20:00 [2]
Ride in. Office work today. I like that.
Cycling (road) 18:00 [2]
Ride home. Productive but long day. Would have stayed longer were it not for crew rest... not that I have any problems with crew rest!
Running (trail) 38:00
shoes: Asics Trail Attack III
Evening run in the Rincons. Got there as storms were building up on either side. Didn't plan on running much so I figured I'd have plenty of warning to turn around. Legs felt kind of dead, but what else is new? Ran up Douglas Springs and then attempted to take Bajada View on my way back. I don't know where the actual trail is but I seemed to have found a lovely wash that went for a ways in the right direction before abruptly dropping off several meters in a cool looking "seasonal waterfall". No sane way down, and at this point the storm was imminent, so I high-tailed it back to DS and down to the car.

On the way down I passed these three people that I'd passed on the way up. They were still going up, hiking leisurely in shorts and t-shirts and nothing but water bottles... I looked up as I passed them and said, "You guys gonna get wet?" What I wanted to say was, "Are you guys freakin' crazy? You're going to get hit by lightening or washed away in a flash flood or at least catch a cold and be wet and miserable! Turn around now!" All they said was, "I guess we might!" and kept going, obviously unable to read my mind and respond to my concerns about their well-being.

Nasty critter report: saw one tarantula sneaking into a hole in the trail just as I ran by. I guess he was skerd.
C • Tarantula 3

Tuesday Jul 31

Note
About the time I was getting ready to go in to work (afternoon) the sky got all gray and the radar picture filled with all kinds of pretty colors. So I drove. Good thing, too, because riding would have been pretty stupid. Most base roads flooded over the edge of the curbs. We lost power after I'd only been in 45 minutes, so it was only a slightly productive afternoon. Did administer another fitness test, on the indoor track. It's tiny - 11 laps for 1 mile, so 16.5 laps for the 1.5 mile test. Ran the last few laps with him and then tried out running at 10 min 1.5 pace myself. It's really hard to go around those tight corners that fast. I think I'll stick to the outdoor track.

Cycling (road) 20:00 [2]
In to work. I think it's a bad sign when you want to be hit by a car so that you don't have to go to work.
C • is it bad that it sounds like ... 7
Cycling (road) 18:00 [2]
Ride home. Late/early. Prettyfasteventhoughitwasthelongway. Not many cars, not that'd I'd want one to hit me on the way *home*.
