| Well, this was almost a disaster. I had a lot of controls to put out (mostly near roads or trails) and planned to leave the house at 5am. I brilliantly set an alarm for 4:05pm instead of 4:05am and didn't wake up until 5:15am. I stared at the clock and thought, "5:15, 5:15.... what's wrong with this picture?" Raced up the mountain with Seabass and we hurried off to place controls as quickly as possible.
We didn't get back to the start/finish/registration meadow until 9:10 (starts were supposed to be 9) and I had mental images of the disorganization of the start of the Long Champs last weekend. Luckily most of the ~40 people standing around were totally chill and it went just fine, no revolts or refunds needed, even if it was a bit hectic for that hour. Since this was my first "real" course setting experience I found myself waiting nervously for the first green runner to arrive, worried that maybe I'd placed something in completely the wrong place, or something was really unfair, or it was a really stupid boring course or something. But Mark Everett came back without complaint and in the end it seems that the courses were well received. A few people had a gripe about one particular control (9 on the green), but I can't help it if they thought that the symbol for "southern end" meant "bottom" (the feature was a very very large cliff). So overall a positive experience, a pretty good turnout for a local meet, including many more beginners than usual - I had a little over 20 people in the beginner's clinic! For the curious, courses are up here. And for record, before I'm asked, I think Mook octupled the number of total words spoken to me yesterday. Maybe even more than that.

| One last trip up to Bear Wallow before tomorrow's meet. Set out streamers and controls and made a few notes about some more little map adjustments. Going to have to head up really early tomorrow.
It turns out that a lot of my control locations, especially for white and yellow, are also prime camping spots. On one hilltop I found a couple camping who had made themselves very comfortable. They'd basically taken over the whole top of the hill, and they'll be there for a week. It pretty much ruined the location AND they didn't seem too keen on the idea of people running through their campsite. So I went with the next hill, which wasn't actually on the map (damn those 40ft contours)... Nothing a form line can't fix. Then there was the guy camped on my spur. He was really big fan of Jesus and he was the opposite as far as attitudes were concerned... didn't matter what I did, we were both just enjoying God's land, he said. Besides, he won't be around tomorrow morning, he'll be at church. That worked well. Spent about 3:45 out, but some of it was driving and sorting through controls, etc.

| (sick) | ||
| I feel like I've been hit by a bus, or maybe a C-130. Yessss!
In a stroke of real cuteness, Kitty is sick, too! Well, at least, there seems to by some sympathetic puking going on.
| C • Poor Kitty! 3 | ||
| Running warm up/down 5:00 [1] | ||
| Morning PT, basically on your own aside from some completely asinine group stretching. Jogged around to get a little warmed up. | ||
| Strength/Core 35:00 [1] | ||
| About 30 min of serious stretching/yoga and 5 min of some pushups and situps. In a quiet spot, by myself, in the shade. Away from the asininity. | ||
Thursday Aug 16 | ||
| Note | ||
| Sore throat. Argh.
And I'm definitely sick. Awesome! Speaking of sick, and of being killed by dangerous critters, this is pretty gross.
| C • Ugh! 4 | ||
Wednesday Aug 15 | ||
| Running (road/dirt) 40:30 [2] 4.1 mi (9:52 / mi) | ||
| slept:7.0 shoes: Kayano XI - grey | ||
| Morning run, stiff, cursing my bed the whole way. Not too hot, upper 70s, but still sweating like a sugared strawberry.

| Cycling (road) 20:00 [2] | ||
| In to work.
Yesterday when I drove up to the gate "my" gate guard was there (the one who told me to wear brighter colors when I ride). As I pulled up he said, "LT, no bike today? Are you slackin'?!" To which I said, "Yep, slackin'." He seemed happy today that I was on my bike again, restoring order to his world.
| Cycling (road) 20:00 [2] | ||
| Ride home. Pretty warm out, though apparently not as hot as St. Louis. | ||
| C • are we famous now? 8 | ||
Tuesday Aug 14 | ||
| Note | ||
| Drove to work today mostly because I had to be rapid-response ready for a furniture delivery. (I hope Seabass isn't reading this. Shhh...) But it was also a busy day at work involving a bit of driving around base. Part of the driving was to attend two separate presentations - one in the morning and one in the afternoon - on the same topic. I had to go to two of them because I hold two positions which are affected by this topic but for some reason involve different information. What was so important that they held two days of briefings on base? That took me away from my desk for two hours? That they needed to hire a Doctor/retired Colonel to give the briefings? You're going to love this. The topic was ... wait for it ... wait for it... a new form!
I couldn't make this stuff up.

Monday Aug 13 | ||
| Cycling (road) 22:00 [2] | ||
| Dropped my car off at the brake shop (yep, that's broken, too!) and then rode in to work from there. Legs pretty shot, and there was a headwind. Got in late last night and didn't sleep much. But still, life is good. | ||
| Note | ||
| In the official rules of Aeronautical Pentathlon, from the section governing shooting:
3.2.4.4 Clothing Clothing is optional. All team members should wear the same type of clothing. The competitorīs contest number must be fastened to his back.
| Cycling (road) 18:00 [3] | ||
| From work to the brake shop to pick up my car, going as fast as my little legs would push me to get there before they closed. Didn't get there before closing time but did get the car back. Phew. Life is still good. | ||
