Sunday Dec 23

Note
Eugh, woke up with a sore throat. I love getting sick! Especially at the very beginning of a vacation. It's time for an experimental evaluation of Cold-EEZEŽ. I wonder how many I can fit in my mouth at one time?
Note
I made it to New England but my luggage didn't.

Shrek the Third (1)
because I'm a sucker for Donkey.

Saturday Dec 22

Running (road) 32:00 [1] 2.78 mi (11:30 / mi)
shoes: Gus
I spent the afternoon interviewing applicants to the U of R. It was interesting, but none of them wanted to go run with me so I had to wait until dark. Went for an easy run with seabass, most of the way around the golf course. It was actually kind of chilly out. We walked the rest of the way home once seabass declared the end of the running period and my hands were stiff and slow by the time we got back!

Everything felt normal, which means I will enjoy the holiday week as planned... as long as the snow cooperates.

Friday Dec 21

Note
Half an hour ago I knew nothing about water polo. Now I know a few things that surprised me:

1. You can only handle the ball with one hand
2. Only the goalie can touch the bottom of the pool
3. Water polo players are not all hot

Now, except for number 3, I'm not sure how to adapt this for my out-of-shape squadron. I have 15 minutes to figure it out! Full report later.
C • Not hot... 7
Swimming 40:20
Well, it turned out not to matter what the rules are. We didn't actually play water polo, we played a 20-on-20 juvenile male bonding game that just happened to involve a water polo ball and two nets, in a pool. And a surprising amount of physical contact for a group of homophobic frat boy types.

Wednesday Dec 19

Running (road) 20:00 [2] 2.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: Kayano XII (pink)
More successful than yesterday but there's still trouble. Went for a sunset run out to the golf course. Everything feels pretty good, so I wanted to do an easy 30 min, but my right Achilles kept flaring up. Stretched a little before and I was pain-free to start, but I ended up stopping every 5 minutes to stretch. And then it would flare back up. Feels like tendinitis, which shouldn't be a big problem. No reason to do much running these two weeks anyway... I just hope it doesn't stop me from skiing next week. (!)

But, that does remind me that I should send a nasty postcard or something to a particular doctor who, many years ago, after lots and lots of nasty tendinitis, told me that my feet were attached to my legs wrong, I should have had surgery as a kid, and that, sorry, but I'd never run a marathon. To him I say "HA" and "pbbbbbbbt!"

Tuesday Dec 18

Note
Seabass ordered me to drive to work today. Something about the combination of walking funny yesterday and having to get up at 4 to go to work. I complied. I may go for an easy run this evening, as I am still sore but not prohibitively so... I'll wish myself luck.
Note
I stepped out the door, ran about 30 steps, then turned around and ran back. Everything felt fine walking around, but as soon as I started running I had a pretty nasty tugging feeling on my right calf/achilles, enough that I was going "ker-plonk, ker-plonk" pretty heavily down the street. I don't think that another day or two of non-running will hurt me. But I am bummed.

Monday Dec 17

Cycling (road) 25:00 [1]
Ride in, a little slower than usual.

Sleep is a wonderful, restorative process. When I woke up this morning I was fully expecting my legs to feel worse today than they did yesterday. Amazingly, much to my delight and extreme joy, they felt much better. I'm still really sore, but I don't even think I'm walking funny any more!
Note
Addendum:

I spoke too soon.
Cycling (road) 20:00 [2]
Ride home.
