Happy Newtonmas, everyone!

Remember to decorate your apple trees, give intellectually stimulating gifts, and then procrastinate.

Cycling (trail) 1:45:00 [2] 11.8 mi (6.7 mph)
ahr:137 max:179

Early release today, so a midday ride on the AZT from Pistol Hill Rd. Sunny, low 50s. First I rode towards Utah. I didn't quite make it and turned around after about 4 miles (past Rincon Creek, and apparently past where the trail is well-defined and beautifully smooth). Got back to Pistol Hill Rd and decided to continue going towards Mexico. Didn't make it that far, either, but I did discover that the first ~1.5 miles S of Pistol Hill are even sweeter than the ~3.5 miles N of Pistol Hill. Nice riding and stunning scenery all around.

Note

I checked some maps and AZT info and it turns out that the reason the trail stunk after crossing RIncon Creek is because there is no trail there. Or at least there isn't supposed to be. The National Park boundary isn't obvious but I suppose I had reached it. Someone's tried to get to Hope Camp from the creek, because there were at least obvious switchbacks out of the creek, but in less than a half mile it's impossible to follow.

Cycling (trail) 1:00:00 6.0 mi (6.0 mph)
ahr:156 max:180

Afternoon mountain biking in the Tucson Mtns. It was distinctly cooler today than past days because of the, um, cold front. Go figure. About 50 and breezy, but the rains were long gone and it was sunny again.

According to my training plan I am now in a relaxed period of 'anything I want' for training. After seeing so many people mountain biking while setting at Cat Mtn I had an itch to go myself. Dusted off my bike and headed over. I'm a bit rusty and the first mile or so was downright sad. I can say with confidence that I have never ridden so slowly and timidly. The first bit, from 36th St to the bowl, took me longer than it does to run the distance. But once I was past there it smoothed out a bit and I was able to relax, clip in, and let go of my death grip on the brakes. Definitely better on the way back.

Running (trail) 58:00 [2]
shoes: Rory (inov8 X-Talon 212)

Running on the AZT in Colossal Cave Mountain Park. Visited the cave first.

Cold front coming in, it was very windy, some clouds starting to pick up, but warm enough around 60.

Very nice.
