Sunday Feb 7

12 PM

Running (trail) 1:00:48 7.31 km (8:19 / km)
ahr:157 max:175 slept:9.0 shoes: Rory (Inov8 X-Talon 212)

Turned out I didn't have to go in to the base today and could work from the hotel. Which means I made the best use of my time and headed up to Big Basin, which should probably be called Big Ass Tree Basin. I think it's strange that they're called Redwoods, as if their most distinguishing characteristic is their color, not their size.

Figured my legs would be tired from the past two days so I headed uphill from the parking area. About 50, wet and cool, but no rain. Trails were pretty muddy and there were trees down (big ones) across the trail in many places, making it a bit sporty. Really nice.

4 PM

Hiking 45:00 [2]
shoes: Luke (Inov8 Terroc 308)

Afternoon hike with Lauren in Tilden. Out for about an hour. Really nice, again. If I were able to ignore the traffic - impossible - then I would consider someday trying to live in the Bay Area (again).

Saturday Feb 6

4 PM

Orienteering warm up/down 24:27 *** 3.79 km (6:28 / km)
ahr:154 max:183 11c slept:6.5 shoes: Rory (Inov8 X-Talon 212)

Met Rex and Tapio at Stanford after work for some fun O training. Rex designed a 'star' on the north end of the map, so I designed a warmup course to get us up there and Tapio a course to get us back. This was the warmup course, which we each took a turn leading, and was somehow much faster than a usual warm up.

Orienteering 16:56 *** 2.91 km (5:49 / km)
ahr:167 max:177 4c

Rex's star course, which I tried to run fairly hard, but I didn't really have it in me. Good thing it was flat.

Orienteering warm up/down 12:35 *** 2.02 km (6:15 / km)
ahr:164 max:176 5c

Tapio's course back to the start.

Running 1:14:41 13.04 km (5:44 / km)

Got the guys I'm here with from work to drop me off at Joe's office once we were done. Ran around near the bay for a bit, then over towards Zan's office and up the trash hill there, then back to Joe's. Interesting enough scenery for the run to go by quite quickly. Perfect running weather, cool and no rain.

Felt great.

I used to think that my caffeine consumption had no effect on my sleep, but this little experiment may make me think differently. I seem to be sleeping better without the ddp. We'll see.

On the other hand, I'm doing exactly what I was afraid I would do, which is to occasionally go for some other sweet beverage (usually juice) rather than a diet soda. This is certainly preferable from a general health perspective, but it's not going to help me from a weight control perspective. 200 calories from a bottle of juice is >> 0.

Note
slept:5.0 (rest day)

In San Jose for a few days, and today is a rest day that I've had planned out for a couple of weeks. Only now that it's here, I don't want to rest. Bummer. I will use the time instead to find the places to run for the next three days. :-)

Wednesday Feb 3

6 PM

Running (road) 30:00 [2] 3.4 mi (8:49 / mi)
slept:8.0 weight:145lbs shoes: Rory (Inov8 X-Talon 212)

Stupidly long day at work, so all I managed to do was get in a quick run on base after sunset. Luckily I had my stuff with me (I was planning on a trail run in the afternoon), otherwise I don't know if I'd have made it out once I got home. I would have been more likely to just collapse and sleep.

Misty and low 50s out, but no longer rainy. Legs felt surprisingly good, as if I hadn't run a bunch the last couple of days. Nice.

So far so good on the diet beverage deprivation goal and the CF goal. I have played some really terrible CF, though. And I keep getting stuck in things. Upgraded to the latest version, hopefully that will solve that.

Happy Groundhog Day!

(my favorite holiday!)

Also, the third sentence is so bogus it hurts.

5 PM

Running intervals (road/dirt) 1:31:09 9.72 mi (9:23 / mi)
ahr:162 max:191 shoes: Needs a name (2140)

WOG. It's been a while, but all the familiar faces were there!

Ran over to Reid as my warmup, + 1 lap once there
Then 6 strides (and I really did all six this time!)
Then 6x4:00, with a goal of negative splits.

I ran with Aly, Christie, and Michael, who I think were trying to kill me. I led the first one at a very amicable ~7:20 pace, leaving plenty of room for the rest to speed up. And speed up they did! A bit too much, in fact, and we weren't exactly able to get faster with each one, though they were all significantly faster than the first. A good, tough workout.

Cool down was the run home, joined for the bike path portion by Boone and Aly.

Highlight of the evening was the rain.

ahr:161 max:175 shoes: DJ (Asics 2130)

Very moderate drills and jumps.

Running (road) 49:06 4.05 mi (12:07 / mi)
ahr:144 max:176 shoes: DJ (Asics 2130)

Meet Me at Maynards with Melissa for a nice easy eveningjog. A few people we knew, plus a group of Melissa's co-workers. Good fun for all.

Note

Successfully avoided the temptation of DDP at work. A real accomplishment because I wasn't very busy and I knew there was DDP in the snack bar.

Played CF using the new philosophy, inspired by tombat, of playing to get better at O, not to get better at CF. I think it's a great idea and the right way to do it. But I have a CF learning curve to overcome - while actually orienteering I find orienting my map to be very intuitive and easy. It's one thing I know I can do. ;-) In CF it is a pain in the ass. It'll take a little practice to be able to do it quickly and focus more on the map reading, as I have always just used the 'r' key.

I was a bit surprised to find that trying to play 'realistically' resulted in a decent CF run (for me). I guess actually really reading the map and planning works on the computer, too. :-)

I probably won't write much more this month about CF or DDP, unless there is something particularly interesting to report...
