GPHXO meet at Coon Bluff.
I dragged Sam up to the Valley of the Sun for the Phoenix meet at Coon Bluff. Very nice day, sunny and low 70s.
I could tell during the short warm up jog that I didn't have much in my legs. That meant that it was a good opportunity to practice being careful while tired. It worked, more or less, though I was a little off going to 1 (getting used to the map?) and quite confused on the way to 9. It seemed worse at the time than what the track shows, probably because even the slightest incline made me feel like I should be at home on a recliner rather than trying to run. And there were lots of inclines.
My watch died on the way to 11, so that's all I have for track. The rest went just fine, I was just moving very slowly.
I realized while talking to Sam afterward that these USGS+ maps are good for making sure you are reading the map first and then looking for the features in the terrain. If you try to go the other way then you spend a lot of time wondering why stuff isn't on the map...
Sam had a nice lead on everyone else at about 70 minutes, which is about 50 minutes faster than the predicted winning time. ;-) Ludwig got me by about a minute, keeping the boys safe from being swept by the girls.

Picacho Peak with Sam. Beautiful day, low 70s and sunny, though there was some kickin' dust in the west, clouding the view.
Original plan was to run Phoneline this morning, but Sam got stuck in Dallas overnight, an experience that I'm sure was made much more pleasant by some last minute Carr hosting. So, rather than arriving in Tucson last night, she made it to Phoenix this morning. Picacho Peak seemed like the best way to break up the ride back and run with little hassle.
The first and last two miles of the trip are nice and runnable, and then you get the middle mile(s) with the near vertical cable climbs and the hordes of people slowly making their way up and down. Provided for a nice rest, at least...
A lovely time, and we had many comments from hikers who seemed to think we had tons of energy. I guess we do. :-)

Saguaro East after work. About 60 out, sunny. Melissa ran a smaller rectangle than I did and it would have worked out perfectly had she not taken a wrong turn at the end. ;-)
Felt great, had to reign it in to keep it Friday easy-peasy.

Morningjog, lethargically.
I was in bed for a suitable amount of time last night but I'm not sure how much of it was spent sleeping. I know I spent a fair amount of it sweating and waking up from disturbing dreams. Eugh. Not feeling very peppy, probably because of the sleep and the fact that I'm still catching up on water consumption after yesterday.

Note
I may need to end this experiment. I'm a bit overwhelmed at work, and my usual coping machanism in such situations is a ddp or dc. This afternoon, rather than a ddp (I was being good) I ate a package of cookies (not being good). Ddp may be toxic, but eating packages of cookies right before lunch certainly won't help me in the greater cause. I just need to figure out where the 'moderation' line is.

After work at Saguaro East. The 'winter storm' has cleared out and it was a nice clear, cool evening - about 50. Got there about 30 minutes before sunset and got a bit carried away. Started up Douglas Spring and decided to make a loop out of it: Douglas Spring - Carrillo - Three Tanks - Garwood - DS. It was awesome! I felt great. Must be all of that water I drank today. And the cookies.
A few of the trails have had work done since I was last here. The top of the initial climb on Doug Spring is nicer now, and there are some crazy switchbacks on Three Tanks, making it silly fun to run down. And I ran down them as spritely as possible, because the sun had already set and I wasn't exactly sure how far it was back to the parking lot, and I'd set a rendezvous time with Melissa. I was about 12 minutes late, which isn't too bad, but it's not nice to make people wait.
There was water in several of the streams but no sign of snow. Doesn't look like any of it survived below ~6000'.

slept:5.0 weight:146lbs (rest day)
I hadn't decided whether to take today or Friday as a rest day, but today turned out to make a lot of sense for no activity. Terrible sleep (5 hours is a very generous estimate), long day flying, and totally unpleasant weather. Time for an early night's sleep.
Running (road) 24:19 4.06 km (6:00 / km)

Morningjog, just after sunrise. Upper 30s and clear, nice morning. I listened to music on my Shuffle, which seems to be the same music I had on it in Djibouti. Thankfully, my tastes haven't changed.
Running intervals (dirt/road) 1:20:56 14.36 km (5:38 / km)

WOG. Nice evening, mid-60s when I left home. Ran there, then one lap for the rest of the warmup (~24 minutes), then 4 strides. Same workout as last Tuesday, 6x4:00.
Faster on the last three (by far!) than the fastest interval last week, and I didn't feel like anyone was trying to kill me. The last two were tough (covered about a km) but I survived. Not much of a group tonight, people are getting sick and chose to run more slowly or run less reps. By the last one it was just me and Greg in my group, and Greg was flying ahead.
Had company for about half of the run home, and Chia-Chi and I planned a partial itinerary of wicked workouts for Sam next week.
Running (road) 46:32 6.47 km (7:12 / km)

Back in Tucson in time to go to MMM with Melissa. Nice night, upper 50s, clear. Melissa seemed stronger today than before (again). Now, if we can just get her to run a little more often...
Got some new shoes today, including the ones I wore tonight, the F-Lite 230s. They're very similar to the X-Talon 212s: very light, 2-arrow, sticky rubber. Just a flat shoe for urban/hard pack. But the sizing doesn't seem to be exactly the same, since these seem to be a bit long on me. I don't seem to have a problem anymore with running in slightly big shoes, so I'll just keep these and see if I can't try on a size smaller some time for future pairs.
