US Sprint Champs

Welp, not quite awesome. For the first half of the course I felt like I was orienteering at the edge of control (like, really at the edge) but that I wasn't really running anywhere near 'sprint fast'. Nothing I could do about the running thing, it was almost all I had and I couldn't have read the map faster. It just felt sluggish. But the orienteering was fine, a few hesitations but I think that was okay. Took the left around route to 17 and the left route through the light green to 19, which I guess were fine. Splits seem to indicate that my speed/orienteering wasn't so bad, overall. Even won the split to 8 in F21, which was the only 'trappy' control, so that's a plus. Also, tied for the fastest finish split [edit: in F21!] with Ali, I guess everyone felt as awful as I did at the end. So that's a plus, of a sort.

The moment of extreme unawesomeness was 18. I got off-kilter leaving 17, I might have been checking out the long leg after, and I ran on the upper path instead of dropping down to the ball field. It took me a long time to realize it - had to cut through the light green to get back down and, well, that was slow, too. I thought I'd lost ~20 seconds or so, but by the splits it looks to be more like 45 seconds. In other words, ugh. I am disgusted and kicking myself for the time being, but I will forgive myself in 3, 2, 1... Time to be awesome again.

Went for a very enjoyable and easy, flat run around Heard Farm, mostly just to see how it would feel. Such a beautiful place and it was really nice out. I saw lots of cute wildlife. I spent the run envisioning myself as an awesome orienteer, except for the minute or so when I was considering evasive actions against a very agitated and large dog, owner not in sight for most of the time. Trip to America is complete now, encounter with angry dog while running was the last item on the list.

I want to say that the head explody feeling decreased after running.

Note
(sick)

Fucking sinuses.

I'm not getting better. I think I felt better because I was being diligent about nasal irrigation. I didn't use my neti pot this morning and now my face hurts and I'm getting all tired and clogged up, just like before. So, great, I can irrigate every day and continue to feel like I am improving, but I'm not sure that I actually am solving the problem. Awesome!

Note

Went bowling with Ian, Dean, Caroline and Manuel. My performance was not stellar, and my excitement over the possibility of the first Red Sox win of the season seems to have cost me victory in the second match. However, I was very glad to have a chance to do some real bowling while I was here! And also to meet Manuel. :-)

"Warm up" trot from Brendan's to Tufts with all those people I was with. I don't remember anymore. My sister was there.

Orienteering 19:09 intensity: (44 @1) + (17:01 @2) + (1:24 @3) ** 2.6 km (7:21 / km) +56m 6:39 / km

Sprint 1, Ali's sprint, at a solid jog. I was smart today, s-m-r-t, and kept it really easy, for realz. FULL FOCUS.

Orienteering 26:38 intensity: (1 @0) + (1:04 @1) + (25:33 @2) ** 3.41 km (7:49 / km) +57m 7:12 / km

Brendan's sprint, still taking it easy. SUCCESS. I win.

Running warm up/down (road) 15:01 intensity: (17 @0) + (4:42 @1) + (10:02 @2) 2.38 km (6:19 / km) +19m 6:04 / km

Back to Brendan's for the feast. Good times.

A little warm up trying to actually get warm. It felt cold with jacket on.

Orienteering 57:50 intensity: (24 @1) + (6:21 @2) + (36:26 @3) + (14:39 @4) ** 6.17 km (9:22 / km) +220m 7:57 / km

Prospect Hill Green.

Managed to take it easier than 'racing' but not easy enough to be 'jogging'. Even with all the walking in the second half of the course. Not sure that was smart.

Still, some mistakes.
