Sunrise at Old Tucson 4 mile trail race

Fun!

Running warm up/down (dirt) 6:00 [1] 1.0 km (6:00 / km)
shoes: Georgia O (X-Talon 212)

Quick warmup with some strides. Wanted to run a bit longer but then I heard Randy yelling from the balcony of the saloon and figured I should get close enough to hear in case they did something wild like start early.
2 PM

Orienteering 2:00:00 [1] *** 7.0 km (17:09 / km)
13c shoes: Alex (TrailTalon 275)

Hanging controls for tomorrow's Cholla Chaser at Catalina State Park. This also served as my control scouting trip since the park has been closed. I moved several control locations because they were kind of mean. Should be fun tomorrow.

Running (road) 31:05 intensity: (17 @0) + (4:07 @1) + (13:11 @2) + (12:59 @3) + (7 @4) + (24 @5) 5.26 km (5:54 / km)

I met up with some ComeRunners at the later edition of the Saturday morning run on the Rillito. Saw several old-timers (JoeP, Tim B., and Doreen) and met a few new faces. Tim likes to tell people about me and orienteering whenever I show up to stuff, which is great because I don't have to be this weird O-vangelizer all the time.

I needed to get to Ironwood with all the meet supplies so I just ran and chatted for 15 minutes before turning back. The Rillito, which was a solid, raging river yesterday, was down to a more modest channel this morning. I love seeing water in it!
11 AM

Orienteering race 46:59 intensity: (16 @0) + (5:42 @1) + (9:26 @2) + (21:17 @3) + (10:10 @4) + (8 @5) *** 6.09 km (7:43 / km) +23m 7:34 / km

SWSW Day 1: Ironwood Middle, Blue

Once everyone had started I headed out on Blue. This terrain is so great -- it doesn't look very complicated but you really have to concentrate or else you could find yourself swearing about drainage ditches. And it is totally possible to read the details and run fast with great contact, or properly aim off and spike the controls.

This was a decent run, had a few minor swearing incidents but I was never actually that far, and things made sense. Fun! Nice running weather, 50s and sunny, and I realized halfway through that sunblock and/or a hat would have been a good idea.

Orienteering 27:28 intensity: (3 @0) + (4:18 @1) + (21:32 @2) + (1:26 @3) + (7 @4) + (2 @5) *** 2.62 km (10:28 / km) +22m 10:03 / km
ahr:152 max:181 4c shoes: Georgia O (X-Talon 212)

Control retrieval, the part that I ran. After this I just walked.

Note

Made it to Tucson just fine and witnessed a lot of rain over the past 12 hours. This is great, the desert needs it and you can't beat the smell of the Sonoran Desert after a rainfall! But it was so much rain that lots of washes are flooded and Catalina State Park is inaccessible. That means no streamering for me and no control setting for the Cokers. And nowMelissa's been rebooked to arrive tomorrow afternoon instead of tonight, so you could say things are going really well.

It is nice to be here!

Note

Off to Tucson today! Left the house at 3:57am with Lukas and he's been super chipper and charming on the trip so far. ("Good job!" he told the agents at check-in after they were done dealing with their whole system going down.) Like me, he is a morning person and, despite his short sleep due to our early departure he has not shown any interest in getting any shuteye on flight #1. This means that the probability of the good mood continuing decreases rapidly as our trip progresses. Wish me luck.
