OMM 2018 Black Mountains - Day 2

Little sleep, knees feeling pretty screwed and left shin very sore but wanted to give today a go.

The first 7 controls were tough and slow going, we took it steady but were still feeling reasonable. Was very conservative on the downhills due to knee and shin pain. Lost a little time on each 9 (~90s) and 10 (30s) and still feeling fine at 12 so ploughed on. Foolish route to 13 though dropping down through the bracken to the fence as the undergrowth was awful; lost a good 10mins here.

Uneventful after that until the finish. 5th overall after a drop out. Still really disappointed with performance overall this weekend.

OMM 2018 Black Mountains - Day 1

Bar a hiccup missing the path up the hill to one and having to run back ~100m, the first 3.5hrs up to 12 were comfortable and straight forwards. Nick pushed on up to 13 which is the first time I started feeling it a little but still moving ok on the contouring. We lost a bit of time on 14 being too high and having to bash down the braken into the control. Also not sure going straight using the path to 15 was the best option as it meant a big climb at the end of the leg, though our split was solid.

The wheels came off for me on the way to 17 and it was pretty sudden. We dropped more than perhaps we should have and stopped to get water from the stream but as I stood back up I suddenly felt very dizzy and out of breath. I felt truly awful. I just tried to hang in there to 18 but the climb into 18 was excruciating; I had absolutely no power to get up the hill and was more a crawl on all fours. Had taken on more food and water but these made no difference but I didn't think they would but worth a try.

The last 4-5km was really tough tussocks and wind was biting. I don't remember huge amounts of this section, I was borderline hypothermic and just trying to move forwards, which at times was hard. Our split was nearly 9mins on the run in, I don't know what I was doing to take that long?

We finished 6th on the day which was disappointing particularly given it was going ok. Had lost an hour in that last 10km or so.
