Orienteering race (FWTN, Braid Hills) 1:00:00 [3] **** 3.88 km (15:29 / km) +150m 12:58 / km
shoes: Montrail Highlanders

Braid Hills. Weather fine but cool and windy. After New Year FWTNs are different. This one was contour only plus crags, depressions and fences. Also 2 legs of the course were following a line and adding up the number of 'controls' passed. The map scale was appanantly 1:7500 but seemed more like 1:9500 when measured. I completely stuffed up controls 1 to 4 but then got a grip and enjoyed it. I found 5 'controls' on the line legs; 2 on the first and 3 on the second (the correct answer). Slow from last control to finish as couldn't see the way through the gorse. Very enjoyable; must go back and look in the daylight along with the map. Some of the crags seemed more like earth banks e.g. control 8.

Orienteering (EOT, Hillend) 1:05:00 [3] *** 5.0 km (13:00 / km) +200m 10:50 / km
shoes: Montrail Highlanders

Hillend park; windy cool and a little drizzle. Margaret (and Les?) had devised an exercise where we jogged / walked a fair way up the hill before doing 4 legs following the index contour as far as possible. Quite hard with all the gorse but became easier as we got up the hill above the gorse. Finished on the little hill at the west of the map. Ran down from there but need new batteries so was quite slow. Went with Andrew

Running 27:11 [3] 5.08 km (5:21 / km) +30m 5:12 / km
shoes: Nike Air Thielsen

Mild and clear, hardly any wind. 'Normal' run with Andrew but silly b had had a cheese and ham toastie too close to when we started. We had a couple of stretches of walking; hence the slower than usual time. He'll learn hopefully.
