Kadaverløpet 2009. Legendary long distance orienteering organized annually since 1958 by the orienteering club at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences. Bus transport to start (at a secret location) at 8 in the morning, then you get a course and run back. This year, about 45 participants showed up, among them quite a few students with negligible orienteering experience.

Had my alarm set to 6 am, but felt so tired that I turned of the alarm and decided to skip the race. But then I woke up again at 7, feeling much better, and decided to put on some running clothes and give it a try.

The bus ride to the start was quite long, and we ended up on some small dirt roads in Hobøl. Warmed up for a few minutes, consumed some toilet paper, and then was ready for mass start. The course setter could also inform that the map was in 1:50000 scale, and that the course was 27 km.

Some of the guys started off in an incredible speed, and I was fighting hard to keep up with them. Then we got off the path and into the forest, and everyone seemed to slow down. I made a little sprint catching up with Håvard Lucasen, and we took the lead. The first leg must have been about 7k long, and on a 50000-scale map, it is not easy to know where one is. I tried to follow my compass (and of course, Håvard's back), and we seemed to find an ok route.

At the first control, which also was the first drink&food-control, we had obtained almost a 4 minute lead. A cool thing about Kadavern is that 4 minute stop is mandatory at the refreshment controls. In that way I do not need to feel bad about drinking a cup of sports drink and having some energy gel.

First pit stop:


Håvard and I kept on running together, and after making a small mistake at the second control, we were running good and fast. It was good not to be alone, because orienteering on a map like this is hard! My calves started hurting on the way to the fifth control. Asphalt running was hard on them.

Second pit stop:



Had luckily sent some shoes to the second food&drink-control, so I decided to change from Integrators to some heavy Asics running shoes. Pushed down more gel, something to drink, and ran off.

Håvard apparently had decided to win the race, and I had no chance following him on the way to the eigth control. Concentrated on keeping up the pace and orienteer well on my own. Did it pretty well, except some cramps on the inside of my left thigh up the hill to number 10.

All in all a very good and fun race, and a good result for being the first time.
