Sunday Aug 10

Biking (Fountainhead) 45:00 [2] 8.5 mi (5:17 / mi)
shoes: Salomom XT Wings 10
Had time between timing duties today, so I road my bike on the Fountainhead park roads. It seemed like it was all downhill or uphill, though there was a small fairly neutral part as well. Four laps - all the way down to the water and then out to the park entrance. Good breathing activity getting up the hills. I guess you would call it intervals?

I had originally thought that I ride during both 1 hour breaks, but the one session was quite enough. :) Beautiful day, and timing went well as well, so low stress.

Saturday Aug 9

Trail Run (Prince William Forest Par) 2:15:00 [3] 10.2 mi (13:13 / mi)
shoes: Salomom XT Wings 10
Met Joshua (USMAOC) before my planned run and handed off a copy of the map with the controls I streamered back in June.

I got out for my run at 8:20 AM. Temps were just below 70 F and no humidity to speak of. What a special August day in the Washington, DC area!! I figured that if I couldn't be at the US Champs in Laramie that I may as well be in the park from the last US Champs. :)

Since I always do my 10 mile loop in the same direction, just varying the start location, I decided to run in the opposite direction today. I was a little apprehensive about doing this because I always feel like the Turkey Run trail is a major downhill, and I did not look forward to doing this as a major uphill at the end. But, I really liked this direction, and coming back up to Turkey Run wasn't bad at all.

The time isn't one of my best, but after the first 10 minutes where I only had half a lung, I felt like I was really running comfortably and "fast." And getting up the hills seemed easier today. Maybe there is something to the bike riding.

Beside having to hurdle a snake on the trail which didn't hang around for it's photo op!, I have no complaints about the day. No heat, no humidity, not even one FDF. What a great day!

O Training 20:00 [2] 1.0 mi (20:00 / mi)
shoes: Salomom XT Wings 10
Ran into four adventure racers out looking for permanent controls about 20 minutes into my run. I heard someone say "That trail isn't on out map." Knowing that the map they had from the Visitor's Center is very out dated, I backtracked for a consultation. They commented that they had seen the 3 colored streamers I had on a nearby control, and they thought I was a stream bed off. I may have doubted my location, but Sandy and Kris had already been there as well, so I was pretty comfortable. I gave them one of the more updated map I was carrying, and went on. At the stream/trail junction, I decided to go ahead and visit the snake rootstock, and also see if I could find the permanent control.

I found my streamered rootstock again (no snake out today), then went to the cairn I thought they were looking for, but I found no marker.

I headed back to the trail to continue my trail run.

When I finished, one of the guys let me know that they finally found the permanent marker. It was supposed to be on the side of the hill, not on the cairn... However, a park worker had removed it, turned it upside down, and used it to secure a fence in the area marking sensitive area. :(

Friday Aug 8

Note
Late again to work today - 4 out of 5 days this week. Too nice of a day to drive in, but I needed the car today.

Thursday Aug 7

Note
My butt was dragging today, so it was a good day to drive in.

Weird dreams last night. One of them included being presented a bill for dinner which included a $12,200 bottle of wine.

Wednesday Aug 6

Biking (Commute) 58:00 [1] 11.0 mi (5:17 / mi)
shoes: Shimano Bike
IN: 14:30 2.6 miles (extra to get around the light I just missed)
Lunch: 9:00 1.7 (trip actually included picking up lunch today since we were out of leftovers at home)
Mail run/Ice Cream social: 9:00 1.6 (nice to be able to eat ice cream on company time)
Home: 25:30 5.1 (hill split was 2:07)

Had grandiose idea of running after I got home, but the body aches made me think better of it (I AM SO EASY!). So, I read a trashy book and drank white wine instead.

Tuesday Aug 5

Biking 34:00 [1] 6.5 mi (5:13 / mi)
shoes: Shimano Bike
IN: 13:00 2.4
Lunch: 8:30 1.6
Home: 12:30 2.5

Looked like it was going to rain, and I thought I would run after work, so I went straight home instead of going around. Avoided the big hill this way. :)
Running (Neighborhood & bike trail) 20:00 [2] 1.9 mi (10:30 / mi)
shoes: Orange Crush (adidas)
Nothing like being annoyed with my spouse to get me motivated enough to leave the house for a run which I really didn't want to do. Stopped at 4 minute mark to retie my shoes, but otherwise ran without stopping. I was gaining on a fit looking guy at the end, but I decided 20 minutes was enough, so I let him go. Again, my breathing wasn't very good, but then, neither were my legs.

Home, high school, George Mason, bike trail, Walter Reed for a little ways.

Lots of painted over graffiti spots on the bike trail. :(

Walking 28:00 [1] 1.9 mi (14:43 / mi)
shoes: Orange Crush (adidas)
Reverse of the run route.

Monday Aug 4

Biking 55:00 [1] 10.6 mi (5:10 / mi)
shoes: Shimano Bike
IN: 13:00 2.4
Lunch: 8:15 1.6
Mail run: 8:15 1.6
Home: 25:00 5.0

Made it up the hill OK today, though I was breathing pretty heavily.
Core (THE DVD) 40:00 [2]
It was NOT pretty! Had to take about six 30 second breaks besides the couple of short breaks built in, but I did all of the reps (except the rolling planks which bother my toes and ankles). Breathing was ragged and lack of fitness was evident.
