Note

Lailah met her GrandRoger during Spring Break...

5 PM

Walking 1:00:58 [1] 4.16 mi (14:39 / mi) +83m 13:48 / mi
weight:174lbs shoes: Z Hiking Boots

After a nap, around the neighborhood to loosen up the legs. A bit warm for my taste, and speaking of taste, I kept eating bugs. Ugh!

Glad to get a workout in, especially since I walked up and down lots of hills. Good BG training.

9 AM

Orienteering race (West Point - Green Y Long) 2:05:59 [4] *** 5.9 km (21:21 / km) +230m 17:52 / km
shoes: Pink!! Ice Bugs

GPS = 5.59 miles and 291 climb
Error time ~ 32 minutes

Route

Ah, in previous years I would have been super thrilled with this effort, but I think I could have done so much better today... Next year!

After an error to #2, I was very happy with my plan and execution for legs 2-5. Totally blew 5-6-7, and I would have quit when I wasn't finding 7, but it was a long way back, and I hadn't really been out there that long. So, I hung in there for the moral victory.

On the way to 8, there is a little sideways right turn and then back, just before I got on the trail. It looks small, but it was actually key, because I stopped myself from going off where I shouldn't have been going.

Controls 8-9-10 were pleasing, 10 especially because I caught the fact that the cup was a little further down the trail then the reentrant, and I crossed over without any extra climb. The end of the route to 11 was a good recovering for me, recognizing where I was and fixing things before it got ugly.

Finished on empty.

Ended up in 3rd place for the weekend with Peggy 1st, S Pepper 2nd (moved up with a fine effort), me holding onto 3rd, with Janet skipping a control on a course two weeks prematurely.

It was an excellent weekend of orienteering.

Note

Trip home went well, starting with a pleasant stop at the closest McD's, where we sat and ate with Peggy, Nadim, and Max.

Satisfied my salt cravings with heavily salted fries and two double cheese burgers.

Was able to recover the data from my phone, and my new one arrives tomorrow. I was just getting ready to upgrade to the 4, so the loss of the other one isn't that painful, just a little embarrassing.

Walking (Walk to start) 15:31 [1] 1.0 mi (15:31 / mi) +70m 12:45 / mi
shoes: Pink!! Ice Bugs

Day 1 of the 32 Annual West Point A-Meet was staged out of Round Pond.

What a beautiful place.

Got ready and then walked to the start.

9 AM

Orienteering race (West Point - Green Y Midd) 1:05:26 [4] *** 3.5 km (18:42 / km) +140m 15:35 / km
shoes: Pink!! Ice Bugs

GPS = 3.17 miles and 163 m climb
Error time ~15:00

Route

Excited about competing again, though feeling somewhat tempered by the fact that I don't orienteer well at West Point on general principle. I didn't totally disprove that principle, but I did well enough, for me, that I was happy at the end.

Did not go far enough to 1 and then got nervous and drawn off to another control. Happy with navigation to 2 and 3. A bit miffed at 4 because I went right by the boulder on one side and didn't see it until the second pass on the opposite side. Hosed 5 by getting too high and then fighting with the blueberry to add insult to injury. Controls 6-9 went well, but the miss to 10 was a surprise when I saw the tracks. I didn't remember doing that.

It was a beautiful day in the woods, and I had fun hanging out after.
1 PM

Orienteering race (Sprint) 24:24 [4] *** 2.1 km (11:37 / km) +70m 9:58 / km
shoes: Pink!! Ice Bugs

GPS = 1.57 miles and 56 m climb
Error ~1:30

Route

Finished 37/100+. Wow! I didn't even realize that I finished in the top half. Very cool.

Fumbled out of the start into the rose thorn bush stuff. Really happy with seeing and making the correct decision to climb early for #6. Gave back the advantage by staying on the trail too long to #7 and getting hung up in the green.

But, pleased with the race. And, thanks to being able to give a personal prewarning from the spectator control, and Rob noticing that I was finishing, Roger actually got a photo...

5 PM

Note

Had dinner and excellent conversation with Clem and Sandy.

Only sad part of the day was when my phone fell out of my pocket into the toilet.

Walking 10:00 [1] 0.5 mi (20:00 / mi)

Drove into NYC from where we were staying in Spring Valley. First order of business - the usual game Roger plays of thinking he can get street parking in Manhattan. After about 30 minutes, I was having a major meltdown caused by driving up and down streets, feeling more and more anxious, so I finally demanded that we get to the parking garage before 10 to get the early bird rate. Ticket said 9:58. I was thoroughly ticked off at this point, so I am writing this down to remind me that next time I will be demanding we garage park right away, or he can drop me off on the corner.

Anyway, after I was out of the car, I was able to tamp down the anxiety and had a pleasant enough day.

Took the subway to Harlem and walked around there for about 40 minutes until the restaurant opened. Had a large lunch followed by a disappointing trip to an athletic store near Rockefeller Center, and then into Greenwich Village. Back to rescue the car, and now we scored a spot easily near a school. Had dinner before heading back to the hotel.

Roger and I headed off to New York this morning. A leisurely trip up the highway, followed by a nap, and then dinner at a so-so Spanish place, and after dinner drinks at a nicer Italian place.

Mowing/Yard (Speed mowing) 10:00 [0]
weight:177lbs

Roger said I didn't need to mow today, but it was going to be too long if left until next week, so I raced around the yard to get it in before the afternoon thunderstorms.

Bad timing for a mini-funk perhaps, but allergies have laid me pretty low this week, along with trying to get a lot of projects finished. So, I will call this a good taper and rest before WP. Lame, but I am not going to beat myself up over it either.
