Orienteering race (Combat Village - Orange) 16:30 [4] *** 1.2 mi (13:45 / mi) +29m 12:47 / mi
shoes: Red Fish

Ankle injury - probably just sprained badly, but another X-ray in a few days is called for. Sigh.

So, here is the scoop...I went out without my ankle braces. I guess I was feeling invincible or rushed or hard headed, or a combination of all three, and I paid the price. Clearly, I still have lessons to learn.

Kenny was going out on Orange right around the same time, so I had a goal in mind of being less then 1/2 his time, and maybe top 3 as a bonus. This inner competitiveness was further compounded by a couple also on Orange who were near 1 when I punched and then beat me to 2. They were having a drink on the road on the way to 3, and I really wanted to get to 3 ahead of them. So, I ran into the woods, and partway there, going down a slight incline and planting to reverse direction, my left ankle went over, I heard a triple crunch, and as I crumbled to the ground I double knocked my head on the chest high log that I was going around.

Luckily, the head knock didn't seem to be an issue, but the ankle hurt more then any other sprain in the past. I did a quick evaluation as Haley and James came up behind me and asked me if I was OK. I had to admit that I didn't think I was OK, and Haley stayed with me as James ran the mile back to the Start. While he was gone, I crawled and hopped back to the road/water stop and sat in the shade.

Unfortunately, this was the only water stop for Orange-Blue, so lots of people came by, and also there was a rescue squad on hand, so I got a ride back to the start in an ambulance - first for me. Just a little too much attention. An x-ray was suggested, and Marit's daughter, Marit drove me to Ft. Belvoir. Four hours later, I was done there. Of course, with all of the swelling, the x-ray is inconclusive.

Heidi and David drove my car home after, and Roger picked me up at the emergency room.

Thank you to everyone who helped and are thinking of me. Follow up is next Tuesday, and most likely if is just a bad sprain, but either way, I am off of my feet for a few weeks.
