Bailed on the EX2 event in order to be at the first full QOC event of the season.
What a beautiful day, at least while sitting in the shade. It was a little too warm when I went out on my course at 1:30...
Debuted the O-Lynx Touch self-entry system, and I would have to say that it was a success! With 228 starts (~50 of those pre-entered groups), the ability to have people with their own SI-card use an easy interface to enter themselves was invaluable. I think we did about 100 entries through the self serve, either people with their own SI-cards, or some of the 35 who bought cards today, as well as the people needing to be entered for a second course.
Things were going so smoothly, that I got out on a course, and I wasn't even the last starter of the day.
Course went OK, considering that I am in terrible shape. AP error to #1 was because I walked from the Start up the hill and across the dam and was giving a crash course to a couple who had never orienteered before and were going out on Orange with no clue. In the end, they were 45 minutes overtime but had found controls 1-9. Error to 5 was a bit of a poor choice out of 4, and a bit more from going into the woods too soon for the control.
WinSplits doesn't flag 5 as an error but says my "run in" from the GO control was an error. Yes, well, maybe the only nitpick, because, otherwise the course was wonderful...that 325 m run it was no fun. Especially since it was up a slight rise, so it seemed endless.
Excitement of the day was over two 10 year old boys who had navigated around the Yellow course in good time but then took a several mile detour between the GO control and the Finish. The longest split from the GO control in history maybe at 2:38 minutes. The 30 minute talking to that they got from various parties after they were brought back from the next lake over, though not meanly done, was probably a bit excessive at that point.
Anyway, it was a fine day, and I got to play in the woods as well. Thanks, Peggy!
Props to rambo for not only attending the event, coming from far, far away, but also working a registration shift first. Thanks, Amber!
