Orienteering 45:00 [3] 5.0 km (9:00 / km) +70m 8:25 / km

Drove to Jukola in morning . Dropped Ben and Meg at the apartments they were staying in with the RR guys. Then Alice and I set up camp at Jukola in the warm sun, before a brief excursion on the model area. Worth doing. Nice in parts, rough in others. Weather very humid. I managed to just get back before the rain storm hit, but Alice ended up pretty wet.

Easy around some summer controls in a lovely area near Salmi. Lost concentraition totally when I met Alice mid way round and ballsed up a couple of controls.

Grilled Sausages by the lake in the rain for Lunch. Fortunatley a sheltered BBQ area, and had the merits of keeping the mossies at bay.

Rajamaen Rikmenti training at Rockallio . First leg practice - I was given a boys map this year but cut out a few controls so they wouldn't have to wait for me. Great terrain.

Local Rasti Vihti evening race north of Nummela. Small area and mixed - some nice some rough. Multi loops around a central control to squeeze distance in. Orienteering OK but not feeling very strong in terrain. Should probably have opted for the B course - a bit shorter, but looked more fun.

Orienteering race 41:52 [4] 5.05 km (8:17 / km) +80m 7:41 / km

British Middle Champs - Leith Hill.

Late start. Had been told by everyone how tricky it was, so went off with thoughts to treat almost like a night race. Worked OK to start and reasonably clean thru first 9 or so - safe routes etc . Should have done the same on 10 - gone along path to right to junction. Instead followed the vague broken ground ridge. Lost confidence a bit - had I come too far ? - turned round to see control on what looked like the North side of a bush - my description so went back and punched - obviously with out checking the code ! Leaving 10 things did seem a little bit wrong, but I soon sussd out the little paths and alarm bells failed to go off . Joined by Keth Masson for a bit - had no idea whther he started ahead or behind me. Turned out he had started ahead, and looks like he also MPd 10, so I am guessing he saw me punch, and just trusted me !!! Sorry Keith. Very scrappy for a few controls as we proceeded to put each other off - including a pretty signifcant miss (90s) on 15. Got myself back on track with a safe path route to 16 whilst Keith went AWOL .

Strap had come un done on my thumb compass - should have stopped to do it up - instead just tried to hold it on to map with out dropping it. Faffing with that rather than concentrating on direction meant a few more avoidable small misses as the navigation got a bit less fiddly - 19, 21 and even the on the last control I ended up left and going thru thicker forest than I needed to.

So not a good result - and an opportunity missed. I actually really enjoyed the race, a good challenge , and was doing it well in parts ( leading at 9) - just should have kept it together more.
