Orienteering race 1:02:23 [4] 4.88 km (12:47 / km) +305m 9:44 / km

British Nights at Great Tower

A really fun race. Well planned and tricky. Shame about the mist coming and going which made luck quite a factor. Overall I think I benefited - doing most of the race in the relative clear and only having to deal with the mist for the last few controls. So my position - 3rd , behind Tim and Quentin - probably flatters me.

A couple of avoidable wobbles with direction early on a couple of legs - perticulalry 4 which took me longer to work out what I had done than it should have. After that pleased with how I coped with the very technical western slope - apart from missing the path option from 9 to 10. Back in mist by 13 so took my headlight off which helped a lot with seeing things around me, tho' map reading became hard - should have invested 30s to put on my back up light for that purpose. Took some very safe options then to limit the damage.

Note

Much better day than we were expecting, given weather forecast and storm Doris. I think we were in the eye of the storm to start, even had some sunshine. Got a bit windy and decidedly chillier later on , but had chosen a sheltered spot as our base so most did a fair number of the exercises. Only thing I ditched was the clock relay.

Run 1:12:30 [3] 8.6 km (8:26 / km) +470m 6:37 / km

MDC run up Tor Y Foel

One of our smallest turnouts for yonks. Including one of our slower members. So the pace was slow with a lot of regroups. But that was fine after a heavy week last week.

Pretty windy so opted for gradual incline to South of the mountain, which was reasonably sheltered then up ridge with wind either across or behind.

Food in Coach and Horses afterwards was pretty good and in ample portions - definitely better than it used to be.

Run 1:02:00 [3] 10.67 km (5:49 / km) +150m 5:26 / km

Across the Downs to Blaise with Ben, Meg, Chloe and Jack.

My ankle not feeling strong, so avoided the stonier paths in Blaise. Apart form that not feeling too bad until the push up Holybush lane

Lots of frogs in on the path by the river in Blaise. No matterr how many Chloe kissed, none of them became a prince.

Note

A really good 9 day's orienteering. Good maps, terrain and weather. Interesting races.

Good company too , tho' I probably eat and drank too much !

Feel set up for the UK races to come now.
10 AM

Orienteering race 36:03 [4] 4.2 km (8:35 / km) +115m 7:33 / km

Middle race at Canada De Canara.. Chasing start format tho' I wasn't particulalry aware of other runners on my course until the very end.

Nice to finish with my best performance of the week. 3 or 4 wobbles , which I could /should have avoided - but probably never more than 20s or so.

4th on the day, apparently haveing overtaken 4. Slightly less rocky, more runnable terrain probably helped. Wasn't particulalry conscious of my ankle at all.
