Orienteering race 1:05:30 [3] 5.7 km (11:29 / km) +300m 9:06 / km

Army Race at Leckhampton Hill - on Cotswold escarpment overlooking Cheltenham..

Not inclined to race this at all - self preservation on the super steep slopes being far more of a priority. But I enjoyed the outing, great views

Run 1:19:48 [3] 9.84 km (8:07 / km) +246m 7:13 / km

MDC run from Pen y Fan ponds.

To start, quite squelchy alongside some old tip waste then a bit of faffing with non existant foot paths, but finished with a lovely track along the ridge and short diversion to the top of Mynydd Pen y Fan.

Note

A great weekend. Lots of scenery around the fabulous Connemara coast, some nice walks , incuding a decent mountain on Saturday morning. And despite being nearly blown off said mountain, weather far better than had been forecast . Only rained overnight.

Orienteering race 33:46 [4] 4.2 km (8:02 / km) +150m 6:49 / km

Relay on Derreighter . Adjacent to Middle area and very similar. Second leg in team with Charles and Alice. Decent run by Charles on first leg, So set off with some others. Again happy with how clean I was - perhaps one 30s miss - but nowhere near as fast as Aonghus especially on the up hill legs.

Orienteering race 1:11:02 [4] 6.8 km (10:27 / km) +220m 8:59 / km

Long race on Struth an Iolra. Another open area . North side of the road - first part of course - similar to Middle area, but a bit blander and tougher under foot. South side of the road, really much more detailed. A lot of rock feature as well as contour detail. Really fun to orienteer in, and glad I had a 1:10,000 map..

Pleased with how I orienteered apart from one control very near the end. Ignored the warning bell in my head - "this stream that I am expecting cross, seems to be taking a while to appear" ... "oh there it is, and that must that big boulder that is pretty much on the level I want to be at" .... " carefull bearing just over to those boulder over there".... "Where is the control ????" A bit of head scratching to try to relocate , V difficult in such a complex arae, fortunately eventually saw the control 100m / 10m climb above and behind me . 3mins lost.. Worked out when I got back that I had drifted just slightly off line and down the slope a bit, and miss identified the big boulder by the stream. Should have checked the map more carefully - "the stream seems to ahve taken a long time to come up, Is that the boulder I wanted to see, or is there another one that it could be"
Good reminder for next weekend..
