Orienteering 50:00 [3] 6.0 km (8:20 / km)

Controlling duties at Mallards Pike for triple Gloster Middle race. A number of small little loops from the warmth and dry of my car.

Most people seemed to enjoy and appreciate Richard's courses - quite rightly as I thought they made good use of the area he had. One or two whinges about their length - as predicted they were all too long for a middle race. Good job Ben ran 35:01 for the Brown - but even that was too long according to the official guidelines. Fortunately David May wasn't there or I might have got a telling off......

WIFI in the results pavillion, so was able to watch the Rugby, whilst waiting for everyone to finish.

Urban Orienteering race 30:54 [4] 4.89 km (6:19 / km) +70m 5:54 / km

Informal night race around Chepstow.

Eyesight with the narrow alleys and headlight not really up to it . But enjoyed the race, and the drill hall as base, with free soup etc, made for a very sociable evening.

Run 1:41:08 [3] 13.2 km (7:40 / km) +617m 6:13 / km

Run with Alice in the Black Mountains. Table Mountain, Pen Cerrig-calch, Pen Allt Mawr and back down the Tal Trwynau ridge. Lovely sunny day, but still a little bit of snow on the tops. As muddy as ever, but we were parked by a convenient stream so able to clean off ok. Late lunch in the Bear.

Thursday Feb 1 #

(rest day)

None of the Swansea youngsters around, so gave the drive to Swansea a miss - sorry Chester.

Run 42:31 [3] 5.5 km (7:44 / km) +200m 6:32 / km

Picked Alice up after her work on my way back from Pembrey, and had a brief run up on Mynydd y Gaer - Just enough daylight not to need headlights - our first of the year - hooray!

Lots of fierce signs at entrance to the woods on the North side of the mountain, and met some guys in a vehicle coming out of the gate so took footpath up the Western side of it instead. A bit wet, but nowhere as bad as I remember it - and actually probably nicer than the forest track. Checked map when I got back - I had always assumed there was a right of way up thru the wood - but apparently not. Doesn't stop it wrankling a bit - being stopped from going somewhere we have run for years.....

Tuesday Jan 30 #

Had intended to go to Marcus's for MDC run but spent a lot longer at Pembrey than I had expected.

Orienteering race 1:34:15 [4] 8.84 km (10:40 / km) +438m 8:33 / km

Welsh League at Nant y Arian.

Some good old fashioned welsh orienteering - rough forest, steep slopes, tussocky moorland , thick mist / drizzle and dodgy out of date map......

"Waterproof" map, pretty soaked and floppy soon into race. And then got a bit muddy, and ink started rubbing off a little bit. This also happened at last army race - far worse actually. NOTE TO SELF - remember to take good plastic map bag to start in these conditions.

Quite enjoyed it, tho' legs feeling yesterday, and not running or orienteering particulalry well.

Useful Croeso 2020 meeting afterwards. I am not sure if Clare's mum is going to forgive me....
