Orienteering race 30:18 [4] 5.9 km (5:08 / km) +75m 4:50 / km

POM day 1 - Urban Middle in Evora.

Nothing too tricky, or requiring lots of fine close reading of the map - i.e. I could read it !

A bit more traffic - people and cars - than I would have liked

Think I got all the routes OK. And running reasonably. 3 mins down on Clive's winning time which felt about right

Orienteering 30:00 [3] 4.0 km (7:30 / km)

POM Model - Monte do Esbarrondadouro.

A pleasant trot out after an early morning flight. Pretty open and easy - set compass and look up. Couldn't really work out the "distinctive" trees tho'

Orienteering race 1:11:14 [4] 10.77 km (6:37 / km) +117m 6:16 / km

Army race - Hollands Wood in the New Forest.

Very white open forest, some of it lovely and fast and some of it either very soggy or a bit rough - bracken, ditches etc.

Technically very easy - not that the planner could have done much about it. And it didn't stop me from making an enormous banana on one of the controls - 30 degrees out on my bearing at least - 90s perhaps.

Also lost a bit on the penultimate control - rashly plunging into a very wet bit of marshy ground which I could and should have easily avoided. Another 30s ish.

Still pleased with how I was running - beat Colin Dixon foir the first time in a long time in an army race.

Beautiful winters day and a nice outing - worth struggling thru the traffic.

Leigh woods with Keith, Ben and Adam. Drying out nicely . Longest Monday night for a long while. I have it on good authority that Keith swore at least once.....

Orienteering race 1:28:02 [4] 12.1 km (7:17 / km) +185m 6:46 / km

Brown at Triple Gloster classic race.

Very sloppy at times,

Confused at the start - wasn't sure whether I had passed the start kite. Then really poor lack of plan - run and hope I would pick things up. Drifted slightly right, fortunately picked up small marsh with control on it and realised I was on wrong side of veg boundary. 1:23 lost according to splits browser. Saw Clem as I was exitting - knew he was starting not far after me , so that spurred me on a bit.

Suddenly lost confidence on where I was on long leg to 3 - confused a bit by veg - mistook some light green for semi open, and lost track of which forest track I was on, so ended up not quite on the route I had wanted, but corrected easily enough and you can't see mistake in the split.

got into a bit of a race with an RAF guy for a couple of controls, extra pace but missed 7 by about a minute which cancelled things out.

Banana on 13 and crossed at wrong crossing point, caught by proximity of forest track.

Another miss on 17 - poor plan - thought I would see the small clearing and didn't notice distinctive trees on the map ( or the ground - tho I wasn't looking for them) had to check position by going towards track to east and obvious veg change . Another minute

And compass to 18 not good enough - 25s .

took on the rough open with a failry direct route to 20, which in retrospect was a poor choice. But pleased I was strong enough to keep running through it.

in fact in general, pretty pleased with how I was running. Beat some guys I haven't beaten for a while , so encouraging, But navigation needs to be much more disciplined in that type of area - less run on needle and hope needed.
