Run 1:06:27 [3] 11.2 km (5:56 / km) +190m 5:28 / km

Monday night run from Keith's with Keith, Chloe, Cecil, Nobs and met on the Bridge by Ben Maliphant. So a nice sociable chatty run round Ashton Court . The youngsters seemed quite happy to go at a pace this old man and his 'not as fit as he used to be' buddy could manage.

Orienteering race 35:41 [4] 5.07 km (7:02 / km) +50m 6:42 / km

British Middle champs. Stock Hill .

Pretty happy with my performance. A bit hesitant on some of the shorter legs perhaps - I thought the new map was excellent. Clear, and easy to read - the decision to use 5m contours I think was a really good call and helped in that regard. I thought better, easier to use than the 1980s Harveys interpretation with 2.5 m. The one thing I had difficulty with was the north lines - or rather their absence for some significant parts of the map - perhaps emphasised by the 1:7,500 and ISOM compliant 300m gap. Of course, if they had been drawn everywhere, that would have obscured some of the detail - can't have it all ! Anyway, I think some of my hesitation on shorter legs - e.g. 2,3, 6 - , was difficulty I had quickly fixing an accurate bearing. I should have adapted / been flexible and used undergrowth lines rather than worrying where North lines were. Rougher bearings were OK - orientation of control nos, ok to give me a north fix.

Now there is a decent map again, looking forward to running here again - esp in winter when undergrowth down.

Urban Orienteering race 16:25 [4] 3.1 km (5:18 / km) +20m 5:08 / km

British Sprint Champs Bath Uni - Qualifier.

Generally off the pace. Just one significant wobble - 15 s on 9 - spotting ahead of me what I thought were three mapped trees in the pattern I was expecting - actually mapped as scattered trees - and on the orther side of a path - so no excuses. But failed to qualify for A final by 25s anyhow. Dissappointed - need to make sure I do some faster running as part of project 60 ....

Urban Orienteering race 13:17 [4] 2.5 km (5:19 / km) +20m 5:07 / km

B Final. For some reason, a much better performance - easy parkland start, meant I got up to a good tempo from the start ??? Not sure. No problem with multi level stuff - geeking on Friday, paid off in that regard.

Orienteering race 26:18 [4] 3.2 km (8:13 / km) +30m 7:51 / km

Thought it might be a good idea to take in SBOC sprint race around the marina. Traffic diabolical getting into Swansea along Fabian Way - Alice got out and ran last mile or so to get there on time.

When I evenually got there, I was not feeling like running at all, after nearly three hours in the car, but Paddy had kept start open, and I was persuaded to run. No warm up tho' so very slow to start. As I got going started to enjoy it. Almost stopped too soon - completely missing last two controls out but Alice and Pddy shouted at me, so I completed the course. Fortunately journey back was closer to the customary one hour.
