Orienteering race 1:10:09 [4] 8.35 km (8:24 / km) +195m 7:31 / km

Army Race at Mytchett. Wanted to try out ankle in terrain. Well strapped up and it felt OK. With lots of pits in brackeny wood, and not always exactly where I was expecting them, quite a few minor misses but nothing major.

Caught up Alice and Pete Huzan half way round, but was never able to get away.

Becoming sloppy with the Emit punching with one failing to register. But an enjoyable outing none the less.

Long ( for me) cycle with Alice. Plan had been to go along canal as far as Goytre Wharf for some coffee and birthday cake and return the way we came. Got just beyond Pontypool and realised we probably wouldn't be able to get there and back and have time for some cake before it got dark. So turned round and thought we would make a circular route via Hafodyrynys and the Crumlin branch of the canal. Got to the top of the hill at Hafodyrynys and on the spur of the moment decided rather than going along the most poluted road in Wales - albeit only a short stretch , we could go up to Mynydd Maen and back down the ridge to Twmbarlwm and home.

What we failed to take properly into account how much slower the motor cycle trashed track along the top would be - especially given our lack of MTB skills. And ended up coming back down the lane pretty much in the dark. Oops.

Pretty knackered by the end too. Fortunately had some Charlie Daniel made celebration cake, stashed in the freezer which was very reviving.
