Spin from 295 into city on cycleway. #Right knee still swollen and painful after crash yesterday - mobile enough so hopefully not much rehab is needed.

Pocahontas trails. PUnctured twice (once pinch flat, once a duff tube?), had to go back to car for more spare tubes, then came off on gravelly turn and bashed right knee. Feels like I hyperextended it - should be OK if can keep it mobile.
More flowing songle and double track, dusty and sketchy, but fantastic fun,

Capital bike path - 295 out to James and back.
Easy to be snobby about bike paths not being proper cycling, but this is brilliant. No traffic, few junctions, quiet, good surface.

Orienteering 20:00 [3]

Some more mapping at Point of Rocks

Tuesday Aug 25, 2015 #

Out to Dutch gap for a lap, then easily back.

Monday Aug 24, 2015 #

Ride US 42:00 [3]

Easy spin - legs tired to begin with but eased out.

Charles city loop.
A cooler 33 degrees today but this was about all I could manage especially as the last shop was closed. I rely on gas stations to refill bottle and such.
Easy tapping mostly, and the final 20km used some the the recently completed parts of the capital trail - really nice.
Need to target some increasing distance rides as the weather begins to cool off.

Ride US 2:15:00 [3]

Pocahontas IMBA trails. FAntastic swoopy, dry singletrack trails and even managed to re-find the floating feeling a few . Almost like I could ride a mountain bike properly at one time.
Also some fannying around when I became temporarily directionally challenged.
Great way to relax after a trying few days.

Point of Rocks

Wednesday Aug 19, 2015 #

Five small hills, then some spinning.

Roads to Dutch Gap, 2 laps of trails then home. Not technical trails but ideal for getting the hang of CX gearing. Good tempo workout.
Bizarre altercation with elderly bearded guy in truck at stop lights on the way back. I've been here a while now but the unpredictability of attitudes and closed mindedness of some people still takes me by surprise.

Orienteering 20:00 [3]

Rest of map update at point of rocks for an hour or so.

Sunday Aug 16, 2015 #

Ride US 1:30:00 [3]

Aimed for longer ride but legs felt weary. Some battlefields and a small section of the Worlds TTT course.
Need some sort of challenge for the next few weeks. None of the accessible Gran Fondos are convenient dates son will have to invent one of my own.

Saturday Aug 15, 2015 #

To Pocohontas for some IMBA trails

Orienteering 30:00 [3]

An hour updating Map at Point of Rocks. No rocks at all but many track and vegetation changes.

More shakedown. Actually bike rides really sharply.
I'm still nackered though. Two flights separated by a week leave me flat few days; hope things are normal by weekend.

Ride US 35:00 [3]

Shakedown for cx bike. Legs felt great, surprisingly.

Monday Aug 10, 2015 #

Note

Travel back to us. Nineteen hours whichever route one chooses.

Bumbling about to the start and from finish

Orienteering 1:30:00 [3]

Day 5
If I had not already decided not to run tomorrow, could easily have jacked this in several times.
1 - 200 meters to a crag above a stream, except that it was right on the stream and was yellow/ black taped above. Met Donald who had been there a while. Eventually happened on the control.
3 - all my own work, amplified by the white being neither high runnability nor high visibility . On adjacent knoll above another unmapped stream.
5 - loads of unmapped wind blow. Slow.
5-6 apparently the wide green screen means windblow not bracken. Spent ages clambering, backtracking, faffing.
Lovely legs up to 7 and around 8,9. Very slow going though.
12- poor route choice but also lost contact.
Took ages. Enjoyed many parts of it and on balance glad I ran.
But can't help feeling that some aspects of quality control must have failed to present that course one that map as one day of a six day holiday event.

Day 4 inc 20 mins of wu and cd
Steadier again. Not seen splits but no real problems finding flags. Peculiar planning on our course to give so many viable track options in such a lovely forest.
4 - very conservative route choice
6 - hesitated when right on line and to plan. Have yet to regain that inbuilt distance judgement that comes with just doing events.
10 - conservative rc again.

Process still feels very clunky and not floating at all hence the abysmal results, but only to be expected given preparation. Another stick to basics day tomorrow on a late-ish start.

Orienteering 1:00:00 [3]
shoes: XTalon212-1

Day 3 middle at Darnaway.
4- sloppy direction leaving 3 so slightly right - 30 seconds
6. - left 5 on bearing 3-4 - can't remember doing that ever before and now, twice in 2 days. Poor process.
8- should have chosen to keep out of open grot longer
10- likewise - risky route choice through light green
11 sloppy direction leaving 10
14 - sloppy compass again.

So, smaller errors but still very basic ones. Lovely woods but not orienteering in a fluent enjoyable way yet. More concentration on the basics tomorrow.

Ride US 1:40:00 [3]
shoes: 7005SL

Loops around edge of Loch Ness. Relaxing.

Monday Aug 3, 2015 #

Orienteering 1:30:00 [3]
shoes: 'Red' Jalas Blacks

Training continues, although it's a big event to consider as training.

No map CONTACT out of #1 so inexplicably crossed a steam needlessly.
Poor CONCENTRATION out of #3 when navigated to #6 instead.
Low CONFIDENCE to 6 - knew what the map was saying but drawn high by track. Others lost major time here. Not sure why a form line spur in high bracken was used as site when so much else available.
Poor CONTACT approaching 7 in high bracken then took ages to figure it out
Poor PICTURE of 9 so slightly too low
No particular mistakes after that but the whole process which once was so automatic still feels so clunky. And cycling fitness means nothing.

Very simple plan for the next couple of races : have a simple plan for each control and keep more in the moment.
Plus to and from assembly, plus warm up.

Ride US 45:00 [3]
shoes: 7005SL

Easy loop down to Loch Ness with Jenn and nick. Good leg stretch.

S6d day 1
Performance as expected but not as hoped. Map seemed alien and distance judgement non existent. A few smaller misses then binned ages in a stupid are of archery targets. Really enjoyed it - good fun and not as hopeless a result as I had thought.
Hope to get another 20 controls worth of practice tomorrow
