Brown course on DVOA's Fair Hill Mason-Dixon map for the mid-Atlantic Champs. This course didn't get close to the state line (farthest north control was about 800m north). 3.7 km, 135m climb, 1:10000. It was mostly cloudy and upper 40s when we started a bit after 11.

As usual at Fair Hill, courses tend to jump from wooded section to wooded section, with runs through fields in between. The grass in the fields was knocked down but not cut short, so it was a bit "sloggy" at times. I started not long after Jim E. and passed him on the approach to 4 after he got confused by another control nearby (on a stream bend within the control circle, but not on a rootstock). He wasn't far behind at 8 and punched 9 ahead of me but then bobbled leaving the control so I finished several minutes ahead of him. Got my feet wet on my final approach to #10. Only non-spike was checking out the bag on the stream bend (near #4). I suppose I could have gone straighter on the approach to #7, but was avoiding a steep climb.

Finished second in the official Brown Female category (i.e., running your age class's course), well behind Peggy D. who finished in about 47 minutes, and I earned 8 points for DVOA in doing so. I managed to beat all but four of the official Brown Male runners (for bragging rights).

Starting at 1:30-ish, after about a 45 minute break. Temps in low to mid 50s, cloudy.

First leg (of three) on a DVOA 9-point relay team with Glen and Dim Paulau (and daughter who runs with him). This was described as white/yellow level, with control descriptions spelled out. 1.9 km; the 80m climb seemed like a lot, but I came in near the time I predicted for myself (25-30 minutes). Based on my time I guessed Peggy, who started at the same time, was about 16-17 minutes; she was closer to 17, she said.

A bit of a bobble out of #1 when I missed the trail and went 20m down the wrong one before heading back. Caught Florence between 2 and 3 and led (except for across the field between 3 and 4) until the final control, after which she sprinted into the finish. Everyone else was way out ahead of me from the start, except for some kids who started late and passed me. Sam K, who was on 1st leg of a 3-pt team and started 14 minutes after I did, passed me at the last control.

Glen says we finished 9th overall, and earned 8 pts for DVOA (1st place was 60 pts, I think) in the relay.

Mid-Atlantics scoring system below. The first three teams (a 3-pt, a 6-pt, and a 9-pt) today all finished within a minute or so of one another; very nice handicapping.

Park and neighborhood. Stopped our watches early when we saw a hot-air balloon, and then another one, not far from the community. One of them I'd seen before, down in Coopersburg.

Mid 40s and mostly cloudy; a bit breezy.

"Race" around the block with both grands, but as usual we had some stops and slowdowns. The fire hydrant's extension-on-a-spring-for-visibility is a favorite plaything ("barrier" or gate) with this crowd. Around 70 and mostly sunny.

WCOC bring-your-own-map training at Wooster Mountain southwest of Danbury, set by Joe. Brown course, nominally 3.7 km (no climb stated). Overcast and low 40s when we started, with some light breeze; a few sprinkles when we finished.

The length was right, and I spiked them all (7 controls plus the finish), but it was slow going due to large amounts of rock on and off the trails, and steeper climbs (up and down) than I'm used to, plus my legs are already toasted from the past two days' courses. Some flags seemed to be a bit on the hidden side, or unnecessarily hard to get to, but they were all where I expected to see them. I almost bailed after #6 because I was cold and tired, but decided it was good training to keep going.

WCOC Sessions Woods Brown, nicely set by Charlie D. 3.9 km, 130m climb (reasonable) ;-) . Temp was a bit cooler than yesterday, mid to upper 40s and mostly cloudy, but okay once underway.

Short leg to #1, to what I thought was a hill but was actually a depression-in-a-reentrant, then stay on top for the next control. Karen started a bit behind me and didn't catch me until #4 and then was out of sight (she was 52+ minutes). Saw Sue Worthington between 5 and 7 but then got ahead to 8 and 9. Nancy started on Brown after I finished; J-J was one of only 2 on Red, I think. Nancy had a nice run and finished in 61+ minutes. Good to see Lyn and George there too.

Had a brief chat with Bill D. who was helping Charlie at registration. Thanks to you both for your work!

Took the leisurely Rt 6 route between Bristol and Newtown (en route to Danbury), with a stop at Nonnewaug Falls near Waterbury. Once we found a trail map (downloaded from the Woodbury Parks & Rec website), we set off in waning (but enough) daylight. Nice little waterfall in an interesting gorge. Seems like the falls described as the resting place of the last Nonnewaug chief may be upstream from what we saw (see the edited map linked from the page above).

A nice little waterfall, and a nice little hike.

Brown course at Mt Tom by Phil B., 3.8km, 200m climb; sunny and upper 40s at start. Lots of climb, as advertised. No HR strap; just the wrist sensor.

We'd driven partway up last night, staying south of Albany; and did the rest of the drive this morning. We saw 48 and sun most of the way over until reaching the Westfield River valley where there was a lot of fog in the valley and lower temps...down to near 40. I was hoping the temp would be closer to 50 or so; it got there eventually, by the time we left the park.

We had a very nice conversation with PG as we were registering, hearing about his experience and speech on Thursday...also chatted with J-J later about the Utah parks he and Nancy had just returned from visiting.

Spiked them all, almost; I did check out an incorrect boulder near the last control but knew it was along the stream. I didn't see many other orienteers out there; Glen and Ken near the start, a woman with a pink raincoat at 7 and 8, and a fellow (with an accent, and wearing shorts) who was surprised to keep seeing me at controls that were on both his (Red) course and mine. They ran out of Brown maps before I started and repurposed a Red map (crossing off the irrelevant controls and adding one different one)...which apparently caused a shortage of red maps later on. :-D

Note

Just muscle tenderness near the injection site. A bit tired last night but otherwise not much reaction to the booster.

Note

Possibly saw a bobwhite (quail) near the edge of one of the fields I rode in. At first I thought pheasant because it had white at the throat, but it didn't look big enough.

Went biking on dirt trails at Marsh Creek State Park/Reservoir north of Downingtown. We parked at the boat launch on the west side of the lake so I could explore trails to the north (which were classified as more green than blue) while Glen rode along the lake to the blue trails east of the dam. Mid to upper 60s and mostly sunny, so short sleeves worked well.

Had to walk the bike up some of the hills (especially earlier when I wasn't as warmed up), but I did manage to safely descend a trail rated black, though I should have taken the right fork at the crazy rocks (I walked it through the rockiness).

More to explore! And I'd go down Crazy Rocks again and the one that extends it to the east.

One fall (not a complete fall; more of a collapse to one side) due to a poorly chosen line on a trail descent, where I hit my left knee on a rock and have a nice scrape there now...no kneeling for me for awhile.

Brown X Long NRE at Rodney Scout Reservation near Elk Neck SP in Maryland. Nominally 3.9 km, 140m climb; courses today were set by Wyatt R. Some map updates were made to areas near controls, but not as many as I would have liked. Mid 50s.

AP shows 26 minutes of error...~19 of that was going in circles looking for #5 in the wrong reentrant system on the hillside, about 150m west of where I should have been. This area was mapped as light green, but large green leaves remaining on the many of trees in that area reduced visibility; still, I should have corrected sooner.

The rest of the time lost was at #2, where both the charcoal platform and the flag were hidden (tucked in) behind a large unmapped rootstock mostly surrounded by greenbriar; #3, where I didn't read the description and searched the reentrant before realizing I wanted the spur next to it; and #7, where I was too far south and relocated from the road/manmade object (signpost) next to the road. I did pick up a mylar balloon along the way and tucked it into the trash bag at the water stop there (so bonus points for my good deed).

I ended up 3rd of 5, well behind Janet F., and 20+ minutes behind Sandy; ahead of Donna and Sue. 2nd at the sprint behind Janet; 1st in the middle (after Janet got frustrated and dnf'ed). Prizes were bakery-made cookies (triangle-shaped with either orange or white icing) for yesterday and small jars of honey for top 3 today.

Nice weekend; cool temps but no rain make for almost ideal conditions.

Brown X course at Bellevue State Park near Wilmington, DE. 1.9km, 18m climb nominal, set by Tom O (after some back and forth negotiations and redesigning with the park). Tom did a great job and took us to woods areas as well as wide open fields. After waking up to 30F, it warmed up to mid 40s by the time I started.

I overran #6, and neglected to look at the clue for #10, corner of stone wall (it was the *inside* corner). The error at #6 cost more than the one at #10. Otherwise I did the best I could to make route choices quickly, and execute them as fast as my body would allow. Happy with my time/place.

Brown X Middle at Iron Hill Park near Newark, DE. 2.6 km, 65m climb nominal, also set by Tom O. We hadn't been in this park since the last A meet here, and many changes have occurred in the meantime (including disc gold courses, and a new residential development in the southern portion. Mid 50s and sunny.

Not a clean run, but I again was happy that I was able to jog on the trails. Well, I did fall once when I looked at the map rather than where my feet were going on a trail, but no damage.

I wasn't careful with bearing to #1, figuring I could read all the detail of the disc golf areas, but that wasn't the case. I knew it wasn't mine but checked the number on a control on a rootstock near a ditch just to be sure and possibly identify it to use to correct, but that didn't help much. Finally saw Jim Eagleton who I was pretty sure was also on BrX coming towards it and saw where he went.

Happy with my route to 2. Jim found 3 before 2 and was correcting as I approached 3. I saw him again several places later on the course, too.

The area around 6 was hard to read with all the trails and contours so I looped around to the north on trails and hoped I picked the right ones, but found the other large(r) boulder outside the circle to the SSE before correcting.

I should have cut through woods from 6-7 but went out of my way on trails. Jim E., who'd punched 6 at the same time as me, attacked from the trail when I did, though he'd taken a different route to get there. I had him in my sights for most of the rest, though he, and many others, outgunned me on the run-in from the Go control.

Nice to meet Lex and Pete's granddaughter and see Johnny as a grownup/dad. They were only there for this event.
