Wednesday Feb 28

Exerc. Class 55:00 [2]
For some reason my right shoulder has been sore/tight/stiff(?), both before and after class. Doesn't really hurt much; it's just making its presence known.

Monday Feb 26

Exerc. Class 55:00 [2]
Back to the normal exercise class (not at the Y). Fun to be back with Jennifer and the crew--the Y group is so impersonal (no interaction besides just giving direction). But the Y will be good backup (for Fridays and messy weather days when I can't/won't get outside).

Sunday Feb 25

Running (road) long 53:20 [4] 4.4 mi (12:07 / mi)
shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 1
RT Blass loop (Rider's Mills)--CCW. Only had to walk a little, on the steepest part of the hill (about 265ft worth).

Friday Feb 23

Exerc. Class 1:00:00 [3]
"Step it up" class at the Y. I must say, the Y step classes are a "step above" my regular class. I really have to pay attention to follow the new combos (that most of the other participants are familiar with). I'll still go back to my other ex. class, though, because I enjoy that trainer.

Bumper sticker seen on a car on the way home: "I love my weiner." (A woman was driving the car. I will make no other comment.)

Two dozen birds and two squirrels (one grey, one red) observed at the feeder at lunchtime.

Thursday Feb 22

Walking 41:02 [3] 2.6 mi (15:46 / mi)
shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 1
To 1mi point then back via Alb Tpk and Syring.

I don't usually see a lot of wildlife while walking/running (except the occasional dog or sometimes deer), but after I got back I looked out at the bird feeder and counted 2 dozen birds--chickadees, cardinals, juncos, downy woodpecker (on the suet), sparrow, purple finch, goldfinch. The mourning doves were there in similar numbers earlier this morning. I have two feeders and also spread some seed on top of the snow for the ground feeders... though I've noticed the cardinals and juncos are now comfortable going to the feeder itself even though it's not a platform (which they prefer).

Wednesday Feb 21

Exerc. Class 1:00:00 [3]
4-4-2 class at the Y (that's a sequence of 4 min aerobics, 4 min step, and 2 [or more] min of weights). Much tougher than I'm used to as the aerobics was medium-impact (not low-) and there were more reps on the weights. I'm feeling it in the shoulders--good! Loud music.

My regular exer. class is on break this week. I do like that instructor the best.

Tuesday Feb 20

Note
Joined the 'Y' today so I can force myself to exercise during my regular exercise-class's session breaks and on cold/windy days (or hot days in the summer). We'll see where this goes.

I'll run later today, though. It's "warm" outside! 44F--haven't seen that kind of heat since... January!
Running (road) 44:01 [4] 3.65 mi (12:04 / mi)
shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 1
Partly sunny and 44--almost perfect! Surely nicer than it's been lately.

66 & Richmond Rd to Bashford & back. Dist. measured on my FR205.

Monday Feb 19

Note
(rest day)
A well-deserved rest day...

Sunday Feb 18

Orienteering race (Green X) 1:28:06 [5] *** 4.71 km (18:42 / km) +200m 15:26 / km
spiked:9/12c shoes: VJ Falcon - size 6
Lazy at the beginning, plus perhaps the start triangle was in the wrong place? I knew I was headed a little more SSE instead of ESE to #1, but hit ditches that I didn't expect to hit, and corrected from well to the west of my intended route. Sloppy to #2, having to relocate; and the same to #3. After that I settled down and, though not all my routes were optimal (even for me), I had no trouble finding the rest of the controls.

Oh, and those new shoes? Bad idea to wear them the first time at a race (where you can't go back and change them). :-) But you knew that. Two new blisters--ugh.

Day 2 Green X - Splits

Saturday Feb 17

Event: Georgia Navigator Cup

Walking hills 35:00 [2] 2.5 km (14:00 / km) +75m 12:10 / km
shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 (old)
Walk to start; mostly flat or downhill until the last half-km which was fairly steep. When I was called up I couldn't get through the throng of kids and had to ask to be let through.
Orienteering race (Green-X) 1:29:31 [5] *** 5.23 km (17:07 / km) +230m 14:02 / km
spiked:11/13c shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 (old)
My planned route from 3-4 took me in the vicinity of #9 but before I actually checked the reentrant I was unsure where I was so slowed down. Also, on let 5 I was temporarily unfocused (distracted by other runners) and hesitated, but decided I was on-route and lost a little bit to hesitation. Otherwise it was a physical slog up some hillsides but my navigating was dead-on; my sense was that it was a technically "easy" green course (just physical). Around 90 minutes is typical of my present conditioning level (meaning, I haven't been running much lately!).

Orienteering race (sprint) 36:17 [3] *** 2.28 km (15:55 / km)
spiked:8/12c shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 (old)
More exercise? Sure, why not. I was intending to walk (since I saw maprunner doing so) but threw in some jogging here and there (like on the trail, 8-9). Still, I managed to bobble #3 (ended up too far right) and #5 (too far right again; up near #2). Tripped over vines on hillside near #9 and just lost all will to run anymore. I was dead beat by the end.

Sprint - Splits

Green X Day 1 - Splits

Thursday Feb 15

Shoveling (strength) 20:00 [2]
Shoveling 16" of snow to make a path to the garage (about 20' away), then neatening up after using snow thrower.
Strength 2:00:00 [1]
Running the snowthrower to clear the drive (or at least half of it) plus part of the neighbors' (they're around 80 and their machine wasn't working; their daughter won't be there until after work to help them clear the rest)--I cleared out the plowed stuff at the driveway end, and cleared a path from the road to near their house. I did have to manhandle it a few times (like when it ran out of gas...), plus keep my left hand clamped to make it move.

I'm gonna be feeling this tomorrow, and maybe for the next several days! All upper-body, though, so it shouldn't slow me down this weekend. A little bit in the upper back (from the shoveling), front of shoulders, biceps, and the grasping muscles near the thumb were what got used the most.

Wednesday Feb 14

Note
Shoveled a path to[edited this] the road (about 6-7" deep at the time) so I could get the paper and then decided to take the shovel to the mailboxes. Turns out the mail-lady had already been there in her SUV! I shoveled anyway (figuring there will be less to move tomorrow morning). This is always tough because the road plow piles the snow in front of the mailboxes, so it's not light, fluffy stuff I have to move.

Don't think I'll do pushups today. :-)
Note
We're up to 14" of Yowsa!! at 4 pm; more is falling.

Snowblower tomorrow morning after it stops (I hope!). Once I get shoveled out to the garage to get to the snowblower, of course. :-)

Tuesday Feb 13

Note
10 knee pushups (or girly ones, as vmeyer calls them). I can't do the others (yet).

Monday Feb 12

Exerc. Class 55:00 [2]
Good class (including step)--a better workout than on Saturday. Tight hips and back from yesterday's run, so it was a good thing I went today to get all stretched out again. :-)

Sunday Feb 11

Running (road) 46:50 [4] 4.0 mi (11:43 / mi)
shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 1
31 and sunny - finally! Did a fairly flat run because I haven't actually run in a little while (too cold). I should have taken my new neck gaiter (just a little nylon or polyester thing, not fleece) for my face for the first mile... Otherwise, I dressed correctly and was warm enough for the most part.
Note
Got my new Forerunner back a few days ago but it's been too cold (until today) to try it out! Then I went and "stopped" it instead of taking a lap after a mile, and didn't realize it for a couple of tenths.... D'oh!

Saturday Feb 10

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]
Not a very spirited workout today (it was a full house, no room to get too active or use steps), so I rated it 1 intensity (I barely felt my pulse rise; no hint of sweat). Oh well; better than doing nothing. :-)

Friday Feb 9

Walking 35:45 [3]
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 #2
At the mall. 3 round trips. They say it's 1 mile if you go from one end to the other and skirt along the edges of all the nooks and crannies. I didn't do that, but stayed at the edges of the regular aisles, so I did maybe 2.4 mi (which would give me a mile pace of 14:29). This is doable given that there are no hills (only a couple of staircases). :-) 20 and windy outside--yeah, I'll walk indoors.

Thursday Feb 8

Strength (moving wood) 10:00 [3]
Brought wood in, refilled wood cart, brought more wood in (used all the wood in the hoop and had to refill!), refilled wood cart, put cart away.

Does this count as "carbon sequestration"??

Wednesday Feb 7

Exerc. Class 55:00 [2]
Circuits today. What does that mean? Instead of everyone doing the same thing at the same time, some of us rotated through various exercises (plies, bicep curls, triceps, Superman, bridge, lateral raises, chair sits, etc.) while others worked on the step. Same workout as usual with a different approach.

I don't usually do full pushups; I don't even do knee-based pushups very often (I substitute "bench presses" with 10-lb weights--I know, wimpy!). But I did 1-1/2 full pushups today (couldn't push back up from the 2nd one). We'll see if I can do 2 tomorrow.

Tuesday Feb 6

Note
I got my replacement FR205 yesterday. The beep sounds much louder. I wonder what will happen to the one I returned.

Monday Feb 5

Exerc. Class 55:00 [2]
Tough class, lots of weight reps. Felt good.

Saturday Feb 3

Exerc. Class 55:00 [2]
Another Saturday class. It's warmer out than they said it would be today, but I decided indoor exercise would be just as good as outdoor, especially since the roads are messy due to the 2-3 inches of snow we got last night. It was fun listening to the instructor spar verbally with one of the students, too. :-)

The snow makes everything look nice, and best of all covers up the manure (and smell) on the field next door!

Friday Feb 2

Walking 29:36 [4] 2.0 mi (14:48 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 #2
Couldn't pass up this beautiful day (38F) (plus I had some things to mail at the P.O.).

AOWN: Pungent aroma of liquid manure, spread on the meadow/field adjacent to our property. Wonder if they're planning on planting something there come spring?

Thursday Feb 1

Walking 50:15 [4] 3.3 mi (15:14 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 #2
Pratt Rd. out-and-back (incl. hills). A bit on the cool/breezy side, temp. about 30.

Felt good to walk; felt even better to be done. :-)
