WCOC local meet at Paugussett SF. After yesterday's hike I didn't think my legs were up to doing Red. Fortunately, the Green used many of the same detailed areas of the map as Red so we got a technical as well as physical challenge. Great course, set by Dave Webber. Somehow I managed to finish second of the women (about 9-10 minutes behind the fastest woman, a visitor from Germany) on the course and 3rd overall, out of about 10, despite my slow per/k time! Red turned out to be the most popular course, with more than 20!
I did manage to mess up a few controls; on one I was distracted by Donna who had picked up someone's cell phone (dropped on the trail) and wanted me to clip it to her pack--when I continued I went the wrong way. On two others I know I didn't check my compass enough and misread the rock detail and had to correct from nearby features (I probably spent too much time looking before correcting, but I consciously did relocate off nearby features--good practice there). At # 5 I misread the clue and thought I was looking for the south side of a hill instead of a boulder--d'oh! In total, about 6-7 minutes of error, maybe?
