Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

In Chatham. No stepping -- again. What is this -- the easy class??

Sunday Jun 7, 2009 #

Walking 29:03 [2] 2.0 mi (14:31 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 #4-Y

MB community center (used to be UM church) and back. Lovely afternoon, overcast (keeping it cooler) and upper 70s.

Orienteering race 47:41 [3] *** 2.3 km (20:44 / km)
spiked:11/14c shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #2

EMPO 'long' sprint at Foxenkill Flats (new map at BKW Schools campus). 1:5000, 2.5m contours Beautiful day, sunny and upper 70s.

First two controls, fine. Then DISASTER, as the next control, visible from the 2nd, was on the other side of a high-enough chain-link fence that I didn't want to climb it (at least one runner did; I was concerned about the pointy things at the top.

I looked quickly for a gap in the fence but didn't see one near where I was; thought the choice was 200m around the fence to the left or 150m to the right, so I went right; but after about 50m of almost-fight (mapped as light green) realized the veg. was really crappy. THEN I noticed the gap in the fence 35-40m in the opposite direction. Choice words were spoken; I went back the way I came, to use the gap. About 3:45 lost. Ugh.

All the woods were mapped as white or light green, but there were variations in levels of green, I think, that weren't reflected on the map.

Major bobble on another control just off the edge of a field (I mis-read the field), and plunged into the green woods much too early; 6:30 lost.

Then, on another short leg that should have taken a minute (but was determined later to be incorrectly mapped and possibly incorrectly placed as well) I went well beyond the control and doubled back after hitting a major stream; another 8:30 lost.

Okay on the rest, but those three mistakes (on a 'spirnt' course!) cost me almost 19 minutes. I'm pretty sure I was in last place. Time to refuel and get mentally prepared for the next one at Norray Farm, a few miles away.

Dist. covered (per FR) -- 3.55 km.

Orienteering race 1:00:43 [3] *** 3.6 km (16:52 / km)
spiked:12/14c shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #2

EMPO 'long' sprint at Norray Farm. Much better outing than this morning; my bobbles (5 and 13) were minor, probably 2-3 minutes total (mostly a poor reading of the trails from 4-5). Phil H-T added a small bit of neat cliff/woods near the start/finish and set 4 controls there near the end. I wasn't fastest woman (I think Dorinda was, at ~58 min) but I wasn't last this time, either.

If Glen and I both have decent runs, I typically run 150% longer than he does. When I finished he asked me to calculate his time; 2/3rd of my time is darn close to 40:14 40:28 [corrected], which was his time. :-)

FR shows distance covered of 4.73 km (Glen was around 4.4) 4.58.

Might scan maps and post them later.

Note

Track maps for Foxenkill and Norray.

My track is in pink; Glen's is in orange.

Note
(rest day)

Legs (quads and calves) sore from yesterday. Will take it easy today, getting ready for EMPO sprints in Berne Saturday. :-)

Running (dirt) hills 21:19 [2] ** 1.03 mi (20:41 / mi) +75m 16:52 / mi
shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 1

Went to Lenox (after volunteering at the school library) to run the Walsh trail south from Olivia's Overlook. People in the parking lot, so decided to drive down to Stevens Glen (pdf) to see if it was less populated, as I still needed to change clothes. It was deserted.

So I changed, then ran the trail to the waterfall and back as a warm-up to my run/hike from Olivia's. Walked the uphills if they got too steep, which they tended to do, and took it easy on the descent, too. Took the left fork(s) when the trails split.

Wide open woods (with ferns in places but not ubiquitous) under mostly pines with some hardwoods mixed in to contribute to the leafy surface (duff) off-trail.

Running (dirt) hills 1:07:32 [3] ** 3.3 mi (20:28 / mi) +200m 17:13 / mi
shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 1

Walking mixed in when it got too steep to run.

After Stevens Glen, went back to Olivia's Overlook and headed out on the trails there. I decided to do the Walsh to Charcoal Trail (counter-clockwise loop) with a side trip to the cistern, then back up the hill to parking. Nice day for running, partly cloudy and low 70s. Saw 3 other people on the trail (including a woman, smiling, listening to an iPod, and dressed in what appeared to be linen tank top and cropped pants - perhaps she had climbed up from the Kripalu Yoga Center down the road...). From Walsh extended out the Ridge Trail a little bit, as far as the 3rd overlook, then returned to find the Charcoal Trail.

Only saw one charcoal platform, at a wide bend in the trail, but that doesn't mean there weren't more out there. :-) No Lady Slippers, some Mountain Laurel buds (but no flowers, yet -- maybe in a week or so), and lots of Dame's Rockets in a clearing. One relatively small garter snake in the trail, who didn't bat an eye at me (though he did flick his tongue).

The climb back up from the cistern (looks like an old water supply for the estate which was below) wasn't as steep as I expected, either, though I didn't run any of it.

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

In Chatham. No stepping today (just floor aerobics) which is probably just as well for my legs.

Laugh of the day came from this comic:

Speed Bump.

Note

My tracks for Saturday (Brooksvale) and Sunday (Nobscot) green courses.

It looks like I was at the edge of the clearing for # 9 but just didn't see the bag. The track lines are really close!

Tuesday Jun 2, 2009 #

Note

Found a tiny but fairly full tick on the back of my right leg today, above the knee -- will have to keep an eye on the spot, as it's probably from Sunday's outing, so I'm logging it here...

Pilates class 55:00 [0]

At the Y. Felt "the burn" for a few minutes in some of the exercises, but mostly fairly easy. Worked abs, inner/outer thighs, back, shoulders, but mostly abs. :-)

Walking warm up/down (treadmill) 20:00 [2] 1.25 mi (16:00 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Before and after tempo run on the treadmill at the Y.

Hiking hills 17:00 [3] 1.14 mi (14:55 / mi)
shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #3

Incline on 5%, speed at 4mph.

Running (treadmill) tempo 20:00 [4] 2.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Speed at 6 mph, incline started at 1% but dropped before I was done.

Note

Upper body strength -- vacuumed the car today (~20 min.). Lots of loose gravel/stones in the front seat area, likely picked up from our driveway as much as anywhere else.
