Note

AP does not allow characters other than numbers, so I will list the weight that I want to lose. When it gets to or near 0, I will have been successful!
9 AM

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

In Chatham. No stepping today; long warm-up followed by aerobics and abs, then stretching.

Should have walked this afternoon but wimped out. Will do a longer workout tomorrow at the Y.

Note

Goal -- beat 65 minutes if the distance is toward the short end (possible 3-5 mi; based optimistically on 2008 results and who I run near). Distance is yet unknown, so I don't know how realistic the goal is, but maybe it will give me impetus at the finish...

Weight to lose: 9 pounds (~4kg)

3 PM

Walking 45:38 [2] 2.63 mi (17:21 / mi) +70m 16:01 / mi
shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 2

With Glen, to get out of the house on this 'warm' but gray day (temp in upper 40s most of the day).

The predicted rain may have something to say about tomorrow's snowshoe race ...

Note

Looking back at 2010:

I have about 60 hours more training logged than last year (which was slightly better than the year before), but a lot of it was Pilates (almost twice as much as 2009, when I discovered the class after I couldn't do the step class anymore). Almost 2 hours less orienteering than 2009, but more hiking, which might reflect the trips up to the plateau at Moreau. My road running has hit just about 0.

I guess a goal for 2011 is to have more hours of orienteering. I listed last year's (and 2008's) snowshoeing under running, I think, so I don't have a comparison there. I did 4 races each of the past two years. Maybe I can get to a 5th this year, now that I don't have to "rent" snowshoes. :-)
4 PM

Snowshoe 31:35 [3] 1.54 mi (20:31 / mi) +35m 19:10 / mi
shoes: Dion 121 snowshoes

Ran around the back fields in the track that Glen set a day or two ago, getting near sunset so it limited how long I was out. The new snowshoes are awesome -- now I have to go to enough races to make them worthwhile. Didn't push the pace too much as we're doing a race on Sunday.

Clothing choices all pretty good for ~38F except for the pants -- supplex nylon but the snow stuck right to it and immediately melted -- very cold!!! Will try something different Sunday. (Trail NB 706 #2)

Ran the downhills and a few flats, but had to walk all uphills. This is not a flat course.

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

Used rings for extra hip workout. Did several Pilates pushups (full plank to dropped knees to drop shoulder-back to push up, then back to plank). Not a good idea with my shoulder, which is achy now. Probably should have just stuck with a plank, which I can do for a little while.
11 AM

Walking hills (treadmill) 32:36 [2] 2.0 mi (16:18 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

1/2 mile warmup at 0.5% incline - 7:48
1/2 mile at 5-6.5% (MHR 122) - 8:11
1/2 mile at 3% - 7:43
1/4 mile at 8% (MHR 128) - 4:15
1/4 mile cool-down at 1% - 4:39

Note

For Christmas, we made our almost-16-year old non-orienteer nephew do a scavenger hunt for his present (XBox 360-Kinect)...

We hid flat candies (Ghirardelli peppermint bark, individually wrapped) which had a piece of paper taped to them. The papers each had a letter, which spelled the location of the present, once unscrambled. It only took him a few minutes to unscramble the 10 letters. I think he enjoyed it, much more than if he just found a box under the tree and knew what it was.

The A-meet near Pittsburgh, PA, next June is in his neck of the woods, and my brother (his father) is the only one of my siblings who doesn't orienteer. We hope to get him "hooked" as well, once we can get him to a meet!

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

Wasn't sure I'd make it to Pilates as I had an appointment in Albany this AM. Got to the Y just after 10 and realized I'd make the 10:30 class just fine. Walked a few laps of the indoor track to warm up before (5:42, 0.4 miles).

They refinished the wood floor in the exercise room just last Thursday, so there's still some odor from that but it wasn't as bad as I expected (and as the basketball courts below the indoor track seem to be when they're redone).
11 AM

Fitness equipment (erging) 5:00 [1] 0.7 km (7:06 / km)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Erging to do some upper body since I can't do side planks because of my shoulder. We also did some chest presses and flys in Pilates.

Walking (treadmill) 29:18 [2] 2.0 mi (14:39 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Incline 1%

Walking warm up/down (treadmill) 4:34 [1] 0.25 mi (18:17 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Listened to a How Stuff Works episode from last February about the Amish during my walking. I'm pretty sure I listened to it before.
