Orienteering race 48:20 [4] *** 3.9 km (12:24 / km) +99m 11:00 / km
spiked:12/12c slept:6.0 shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #3

Day 1 Brown, US two-day classic champs at Uwharrie National Forest near Asheboro, NC. I enjoyed the course and while I got all controls with no problem, I was a bit off my intended line to two of them (6 and 7) but had no trouble figuring out where to go when close. I enjoyed Allan N's befuddlement on the way to 11 (distracted by a white control at a nearby trail junction; he had caught me at 10) while I went straight to the dot knoll.

UPDATED:
I wore my FR 205 with display taped at the start by the meet officials. Only touched the start/stop and lap buttons. Probably should have just ignored taking laps, and will likely do so in Georgia.

FR data: 4.172 km, 100m climb. Darned close to nominal data.

Good points:
> I used careful routes making use of map features to guide me. Though we missed the model map on Friday with a late arrival, the first two controls gave me a feel for how the rocks were mapped and how gentle the 3m contours were. Had a little help with people at the flag on 4 and 5, but otherwise I didn't see too many folks out there as I was a later starter.
> Tried to stay as close to the line as I could, barring nasty obstacles. The course avoided most of the steeper climbs (as a good brown course should). From 8-9 I didn't like the looks of the green (laurel) so I swung a bit to the left/south and then around the earth bank on the W side of the stream. I didn't even see the earth bank on the E side in the green!
> At 11, as soon as I reached the top of the closer ditch to the control I started looking for whatever could be mapped as a line of dot knolls and followed them to the end even though I saw another flag nearby.

Could have been better:
> Speed on hills (duh) -- this is always the case
> not tripping on the mapped fence on the short leg between 7 and 8
> going straight through the green from 12 into finish rather than back out to the trail, but that was only a few seconds lost

Overall I was very happy with my run and my placing for the day.

Running (dirt) warm up/down 3:29 [2] 0.26 mi (13:25 / mi) +7m 12:23 / mi

Warming up on the road and around the start/finish field.

Note
(rest day)

Some creature walked (?) off with a suet feeder for the birds. Other suet feeders, when they've been forcibly attacked, have ended up on the ground under the tree, but this one is nowhere to be seen.

Not a big loss (I think they go for $2-3 at the grocery store), just a mystery.

Note

Mystery partially solved; I found the suet cage in a small wooded area about 10-15 meters from its original location. Links on the hanging chain stressed open (but not the cage itself) so maybe raccoon?
6 PM

Note

Silly airport.

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

No tools today except light weights near the end for some arm work. Lots of the normal stuff. :-)

Fitness equipment (elliptical) 31:00 [3]
shoes: Sauc.Shad.6000#7-2012H

Hill interval program, level 3. Was planning to go longer but quads are still a bit sore from Tuesday's intervals and I didn't want to overdo. 1.44mi

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

Lots of stepping; Jen did not fulfill her threat to make it "inner thigh day."
4 PM

Walking (paved road) 25:56 [3]
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 #6 - H

Mailed a sympathy card to a friend at the PO.

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

We used the rings we didn't get to use last week, but there weren't enough for all participants (I did get one). So lots of inner thigh work along with the ever-present ab work.

Running (treadmill) warm up/down 11:38 [3] 1.0 mi (11:38 / mi)
shoes: Sauc.Shad.6000#7-2012H

Decided on intervals today to get them done. This was the warm up.

Running (track) intervals (indoors) 17:11 intensity: (9:05 @2) + (8:06 @4) 1.42 mi (12:06 / mi)
shoes: Sauc.Shad.6000#7-2012H

4 x 345m hard, 230m walking (~2 min on, 2 min off)
Hard--2:02 2:02 2:01 2:01
Easy--2:08 2:13 2:26 2:18

Walking warm up/down (indoor track) 8:06 [2] 0.5 mi (16:12 / mi)
shoes: Sauc.Shad.6000#7-2012H

Also did some pulldowns (11 @ 62.5lb). No adductors because there was enough during Pilates.

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

Okay, so why aren't my legs sore today? Not enough hills yesterday?

Note

Noted some more neat stuff on the website -- thanks ken!

1) There's a "earlier" link at the bottom of the log page (as well as the << button under the week-log at the top)

2) There's a new "share..." link at the bottom of the page which brings up buttons for Google+, Facebook, and Twitter

3) The gray bar for each day's entries now shows a # symbol when you hover over it, which gives the direct link to that entry, so you don't have to figure it out. I think this will be the most useful of the 3 additions I've noted.

spiked:19/21c slept:7.5 shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #3

DVOA local meet at Fort Washington, PA, kinda on the way home from New Holland. :-) Plan to stop in to see the NJ kids for dinner.

Long skinny map with lots of trails, so not very far to relocate if needed. I was doing pretty well until the second road crossing where there were other orienteers crossing at the same time and I didn't have a good plan (actually overran my plan) from the road. But I was first to reach the control (green 18/ #70) of the group around there. Then bobbled a trail junction shortly thereafter and had to backtrack and correct (green 20/#71). Otherwise I navigated okay. Gotta be more careful when I'm tired.

UPDATE: Added FR track; 5.863 km, 168m climb calculated by Garmin/AP
Total time 1:02:39, but two splits were deduced for the untimed road crossings, resulting in race time noted above.
