Hiking (Uphill) 31:23 [2] 1.84 km (17:06 / km) +156m 12:00 / km
slept:7.5 shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 2

Hiked from Spier Falls Rd parking area to meeting place for team training weekend exercises. Alex was there along with several US team members plus the Owens family from VT.

Orienteering (control pick) 1:06:38 [3] 3.91 km (17:03 / km) +93m 15:14 / km
spiked:9/12c shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #3

Training on the plateau at Moreau, thanks to Alex and Ali and everyone else who helped set this up. I did the first 12 controls on the control-pick exercise, then headed back to the start. I probably should have worked on improving memorization with the partner exercise, but we had limited time and both Glen and I wanted to do this one.

Edit: Updated # controls. No relocation needed (except on the way from 12 to the start), but I counted as non-spikes those where I was in the circle but not finding the streamer or mini control right away but having to look around a bit. At 2, for example, I saw the cliff rather than the rocky knoll in the map circle, and had to look at the description to confirm what I was actually looking for (d'oh--the cliff was a control location I convinced Glen not to use in the A meet). That said, I wasn't far off on any of the ones I didn't get right away. Very fun.

Hiking (Downhill) 42:10 [1] 1.82 km (23:07 / km) +71m 19:21 / km
shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 2

Hiked back to the car, taking the staircase of death (as Glen calls it)/blue trail to the 'amphitheater' and then the white trail to the yellow trail and back to the parking lot at Spier Falls Rd. Somehow Glen's watch measured both hikes closer to 2 km than 1.83, but I log what mine says. :-) Quads got a workout; some of those descents were pretty tricky (muddy and steep).

Despite bug spray, there were plenty of voracious mosquitoes around if you were going slowly enough...we killed our share. Bug spray recommended.

Note

AOWN notes: Saw a black squirrel try to cross the road in front of us Friday (but think better of it and go back), then an oriole or tanager at Pine Bush Preserve near the landfill.

Today on the way home from Ratlum we stopped at the Sheffield Covered Bridge and the frogs were having a concert, along with tons of mosquitoes. Hope the birds got their fill for supper! Nearby fields all flooded with recent rain.

Orienteering race 23:29 [4] *** 2.14 km (11:00 / km) +38m 10:06 / km
spiked:10/13c shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #2

Temp in mid 70s and sunny, but the woods were dry. Wet spots on the trails from recent rain, though!

First sprint, course A, of team sprint relay at Ratlum Mtn, starting in the mass start. Messed up on 3 when I turned the wrong way (90* off!) on the big trails and didn't realize until I'd gone outside the gate and it was woods and not a pond--about a minute and a half or longer error. I'd seen the trail leaving 3 and got to it faster than those who missed it (on the map, it was kind of hidden under the control circle); caught up to Judy again here (who I'd passed on the way to 2, but then oops). Good through the next few; cut through woods a bit too soon to 7 and hit logging remnants; Lyn, who took the trail around, beat Judy and me to the control. 8 was not at the large group of large boulders but a bit downhill and I caught that fact a bit before the others. From 10-11 I stayed at the edge of the field and took the driveway around to the trail below the garden, which turned out to be a good thing as there was some unmapped garden (olive green) if you went around the other way. Glen had already gone off in the leg 2 mass start when I finished.

EDIT: added FR track

Orienteering race 23:24 [4] *** 1.98 km (11:49 / km) +54m 10:24 / km
spiked:10/10c shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #2

Second sprint, B. Nominal distance for both was 1.7 km; 60m climb on the first one, 75 on the second. No wrong trails this time, though I was slow going to the cliff (2) and climbing the bare rock to 3. Route choice from 7-8 had a choice of two trails; the left route was a bit faster, but I took the right. Glen again went out on a mass start. Fun courses. Time from the watch is from the time Glen tagged me; results have me in 23:21 (from the time I punched the start box after picking up my second map).

Afterwards was the picnic and short WCOC club meeting to plan the fall schedule. Good food and good conversations with Gail and Judy. Two kinds of chocolate cake! Thanks to Charlie and Rhonda for again hosting this event; I'm finally getting used to this map.

Running (dirt) 41:40 [2] 4.6 km (9:03 / km) +47m 8:37 / km
slept:7.5 shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 2

Trails at the Pine Bush, from the Nature Center. Nice day, partly sunny with temps in the low to mid 70s. This park was a good choice after the recent rain (almost 2" in the last day or so; 10+" since May 21!) as the sandy trails soak up the water. Marshy areas adjacent to some of the trails had standing water, but I only had to step across a puddle (actually connecting two pools) once. Nice view of the Albany landfill on the east side. :P Walked up only the steepest trails (including the Blue trail cutting back north near the end, which has steps); fell once, landing on my knee but not going all the way down.

10 AM

Walking (indoor track) 22:26 [3] 1.5 mi (14:57 / mi)

Listening to Wait Wait. Foot hurt sometimes, less when I curled my toes. Not a long-term solution.
Cooldown of .2 mi, 3:32

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

5-5-5 (like circuits) again. Right side of torso stiff from yesterday's rings in Pilates, but that loosened up over the course of the class.

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

Using rings. I wish she would change the warm up to -not- start from childs pose which is uncomfortable for my knees and feet; this is something fairly new (I hope just for the summer). Good leg workout.
11 AM

Fitness equipment (elliptical) 20:02 [3]
shoes: Sauc.Shad.6000#7-2012H

Hill interval level 3 for 20 minutes (0.85mi) and cooldown for 2 (0.1).
Adductors and pulldowns after, plus stretching.

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

Except for my right foot (PF) being sore as heck, this was a good workout with intervals of step, aerobics, and strength. Iced my foot before class but it still hurts.
