Hike to start using an orienteering map (had to bushwhack between trails at one point), with Glen, Nancy, and Ed. Forgot to turn watch on until partway to the road but only missed the first few minutes of it.

Cool in the shade but we just kept chugging. I used a hiking pole (which I left at the assembly/download area).

Dechutes Daze 3, Upper Dutchman Short, 4km, set by AliC and Theo Dreher. Temps mostly in 60s during the run.

Fun course with one long leg, gently up and over a hill to flat and mostly open terrain. Fun terrain to play in with not as many scary legs as I expected. ;-)

Short's controls were 1-3 and 8-12 of the Medium course; we just skipped the northern loop and went straight from their 3-8.

I was pushed a bit right to 5 but looked over at the right time. Then was pushed right around the green and started heading for the wrong hill but it didn't look right so corrected. Turned as I went up the clearing and reentrant past the cliff, to see if my sister who started a minute back was behind me, and instead saw my brother (who had started earlier). He said he kept me in sight for 6-7 (and heard the beep at 6) but I went a bit faster down the hill to 8 and in. They were both about 10 minutes back...well done!

Fun course on another beautiful day.

"Dog bones" Short (Border Collie, vs the Long Great Dane) exercise on Lava Butte map south of Bend, upper 60s to low 70s while we were running. 1:10000, 5m. Nominally (best estimate of shortest/best route) 4.9 km with 45m climb. Area was across the road from the actual Lava Butte and Newberry Volcanic National Monument, in flatter wooded terrain with more sandy footing than yesterday's lava areas.

This was a mass start event. There were 7 pairs of controls on the short course where you had to go to one of the numbered pair and then the other before continuing on to the next pair, so it rewarded looking ahead to look not only at the route in to but also out of each pair.

I went 1L-1R-2R-2L-3R-3L-4L-4R-5R-5L-6R-6L-7R-7L-finish (as you look at the dogbone pair from the approach). I overshot the #4 which was a rocky hilltop by circling south of the hill to the west and dropping too low...had to climb back up to it.

Because of the mass start there was a large stream of people to and between the first couple of pairs of controls, but then they started getting more spread out. By the time I was headed to the 5s from 4(tree) I was alone until I got close to 5.

Lucky on 5R because I reached about the right distance from where I left the trail but didn't see the rocky ground right away because of the vegetation in the area, but I noticed someone to my left approach a spot and then move away the way he had come...aha!!

To the almost-start location/finish (stopped my watch before reaching actual start). Double this distance for the walk back to parking.

Deschutes Daze 1-Short, advertised as 4.3 km, but we think they forgot to add back in the distances of the shortcuts-from-the-Long. We skipped 5-6-7 and 9.

Temp at start 65-70. It stayed cool at Mt Bachelor, certainly cooler than the 88 in Bend when we got back.

Trouble with 5 (didn't take a split; bag was hidden in trees), 11 (6th split) (relocated from the road beyond it and then still was one non-ridge over (but saw people) and 14 (not as bad an error. Knee pain coming down the hill out of 13, but I stopped to stretch when I reached the wide trail, and was okay from there.

10 through 14 (my splits 5-9) where in a detailed lava area. Map name? Witch of Many Boulders ;-)

Two falls, one a wooomph onto my belly; the other was softer.
