Note

Sad to see an obituary for erstwhile competitor Shelley Pennington, who died in late June of ovarian cancer.

SVO Brown course at Colonel Denning SP near Doubling Gap. 3.6 km and (purportedly) 160m climb, though my big errors on #3 and 9 had me going up and down hills too. Temp was in the low 70s but climbing and it was very humid in the woods, which were largely open and free from underbrush except in some areas. Some downfall of smaller trunks (hemlocks?) plus numerous mapped rootstocks, of which I had 5 on the course (along with 3 dot knolls and a reentrant). The green course was entirely different from my course; the red apparently had controls from both.

Took the road to the bend for #1, then doglegged back to the road to cross it on the way to #2. To #3 I was on the road until past the embankment, thinking to skirt above the green blob in the reentrant just before the control, but I lost confidence partway and wandered on the wrong side of the spur before I eventually crossed it. Where I crossed I could see a flag on what looked to be a knoll, to my right (uphill) and punched it, but noted it was not the code I was seeking, so I corrected and headed downhill to mine at last. This dot knoll should probably be removed from the map, though, as it was barely up to my knee (not 0.8m as described). I forgot to take a split here.

4-5-6-7 were fine. Came upon a trio (or quad?) of male teenagers at #7 who I had seen on the way to 3, along with a couple of girls wearing black long-sleeved shirts. Another dogleg (as I took the same trail in and out) but then I cut the corner between trails to 8, getting ahead of the girls.

Had the boys within sight through 8 (beating all but one of them to it), then had to cross a steep reentrant on the way to 9 (rootstock next to a stream). I suppose the smarter thing would have been to take the paralleling trail all the way downhill to the roads/camping area then roads/trails to the bend below 9, but I crossed the reentrant, took off from one camping spot without verifying where I was, and then wandered again the the wrong reentrant system (which had water in it which was not reflected on the map) before heading downhill to attack from the bend I should have used much earlier. As I approached I saw the pair of girls in black again. They asked, "do you do multiple courses?" (making me think they thought I had finished long before and was doing another one); I answered I had messed up this control pretty badly. Forgot to take a split here too. Made it back in after that with no difficulty, but I was hot and tired.

I need to be better at ignoring others!!

Positives: I did well on 7 of the 9. The woods were pretty darn open for July. I picked and ate ripe raspberries and/or wineberries on the way in and out of #5.

Car thermometer read 83 as we left a bit after 2pm.

Park and neighborhood loops after dinner with Glen (we started just before sunset so plenty of civil twilight). Two large toads and maybe a few small ones. Mid to upper 70s still.

Apparently the last time I used my Garmin to log exercise was a week ago, biking. So much has happened between then and now I don't remember where that ride was...maybe Nockamixon? ;-)
[EDIT: No, local roads.]

[weekend in DE for a mom's-side extended family reunion, then helping watch grandkids in NJ]

Today's ride was on the D&L Rail Trail, north from Slatington almost to Bowmanstown. We stopped and turned around a bit after Riverside Park which has a boat launch. They are working on the next section, but from the south all they've finished is the bridge over Lizard Creek (where we actually turned around). Then it's on roads through Bowmanstown before rejoining the finished portion. Maybe we'll get there later this summer.

Warm (low to mid 80s with partly sunny skies), and not much shade on the route, especially as it goes through Lehigh Gap. From the Riverside Park boat launch area we could see the north end of the I-476 (Northeast Extension) tunnel through the Blue Mountain ridge west of the Lehigh Gap. It did not thunderstorm and rain on us as it did last time we were on the D&L.
