Note

Two controls (4 and 9) were not synced and/or labeled properly (and not programmed properly so some data fixing was required before posting), leading to some really weird splits to controls 4 and 5, which were actually almost equidistant legs.

(My watch times, shown on my track, are about 5+ minutes each, instead of 2 and 9.)

Green course at Green Lane County Park (northern part), designed by Steve A. Map is dated 2006. There was a lot of downfall in the woods that wasn't reflected on the map which was particularly irksome when near controls. That said, he did keep us in the whiter woods for the most part. About 38 and mostly sunny but a nasty NW breeze (that was kicking up small whitecaps on the lake). Nominally 4.3 km, 110m climb.

One and 2 okay. Hit the stream/ditch area for #3 north of where the flag was and couldn't find the ditch under all the downed trees for awhile. Once I did I managed to find the small "rootstock" the flag was hung near. Good to 4 and 5, then did a loop-de-loop on the way to 6 around more downed trees with mounds of tall grass between them that could have been knolls but weren't. Relocated on the line from the two driveway pillars on the road bend at the edge of the map. Dave Urban was also wandering around here. And then there was a pair of very large trees blocking the way to the flag; Dave went between them while I climbed up part of the knoll one tree laid across and over the log.

Stayed in woods to the creekbed to 8 but should have taken the trail as the rootstock he chose to hang the flag on was almost on the trail. Trail most of the way to 9.

Then a map exchange (he *could* have just put the other map on the back and saved a map case, but there were two bins with maps at 9) so I tucked my first map into a pocket and continued. #10 was head down the hill until I could see a flag in the open woods (on a barely discernible but mapped dot knoll). Trails most of the way to 11, then dogleg back out to head to 12, where I was a bit S of the line but could see from a distance.

13 was my other non-spike. My intent was to head due east to the big trail and identify the stone wall end to attack the dot knoll among root stocks, but I must have been headed more northeast and when I crossed the trail and found rootstocks but no flag, was thinking enough to head to the trail along the lake to find the ditch east of it and in (rather than exploring the unmapped rootstocks looking for a flag that wasn't there). Then it was just a long trail run in from there with a control along the way.

Took a couple of tumbles with no damage, but my right knee is sore now from the uneven terrain. Need to get back to some knee strengthening exercises, I think.

Accidentally turned off my watch at some point so I added 50 seconds back in to match my download time. No HR strap today.

Back to GL tomorrow too, but a different section. I'm signed up for a Yellow course and then control pickup. Hope it's less brutally cold.

Attempted a walk around the block with A. but needed to return to move the car. Mostly overcast and about 50; pre-turkey...

"Orchard" neighborhood and once around our community's exterior. Temp was in the upper 30s with a NW breeze which was uncomfortable at times, but I was properly dressed.

Brand new shoes. A bit underwhelming on the arch support, but otherwise a very cushy ride, and I did not catch a toe.

Brown course on DVOA's Fair Hill Mason-Dixon map for the mid-Atlantic Champs. This course didn't get close to the state line (farthest north control was about 800m north). 3.7 km, 135m climb, 1:10000. It was mostly cloudy and upper 40s when we started a bit after 11.

As usual at Fair Hill, courses tend to jump from wooded section to wooded section, with runs through fields in between. The grass in the fields was knocked down but not cut short, so it was a bit "sloggy" at times. I started not long after Jim E. and passed him on the approach to 4 after he got confused by another control nearby (on a stream bend within the control circle, but not on a rootstock). He wasn't far behind at 8 and punched 9 ahead of me but then bobbled leaving the control so I finished several minutes ahead of him. Got my feet wet on my final approach to #10. Only non-spike was checking out the bag on the stream bend (near #4). I suppose I could have gone straighter on the approach to #7, but was avoiding a steep climb.

Finished second in the official Brown Female category (i.e., running your age class's course), well behind Peggy D. who finished in about 47 minutes, and I earned 8 points for DVOA in doing so. I managed to beat all but four of the official Brown Male runners (for bragging rights).

Starting at 1:30-ish, after about a 45 minute break. Temps in low to mid 50s, cloudy.

First leg (of three) on a DVOA 9-point relay team with Glen and Dim Paulau (and daughter who runs with him). This was described as white/yellow level, with control descriptions spelled out. 1.9 km; the 80m climb seemed like a lot, but I came in near the time I predicted for myself (25-30 minutes). Based on my time I guessed Peggy, who started at the same time, was about 16-17 minutes; she was closer to 17, she said.

A bit of a bobble out of #1 when I missed the trail and went 20m down the wrong one before heading back. Caught Florence between 2 and 3 and led (except for across the field between 3 and 4) until the final control, after which she sprinted into the finish. Everyone else was way out ahead of me from the start, except for some kids who started late and passed me. Sam K, who was on 1st leg of a 3-pt team and started 14 minutes after I did, passed me at the last control.

Glen says we finished 9th overall, and earned 8 pts for DVOA (1st place was 60 pts, I think) in the relay.

Mid-Atlantics scoring system below. The first three teams (a 3-pt, a 6-pt, and a 9-pt) today all finished within a minute or so of one another; very nice handicapping.
