Orienteering 37:06 [3] 4.8 km (7:44 / km) +280m 5:59 / km

Orienteering on Bleaberry fell. Felt good, nice steady pace. One mistakes on number 11, lost 1 and half mins. Was way to low. Mike turned up and showed us that he still has it (33 min). Not sure if he won because Todd and Steve b turned up aswell. Pleased with my strength in terrain at the moment. Feel like my endurance is good at the moment and really looking forward to the Saunders (lets hope for good weather). Long run planned for tomorrow depending on the weather after work. Up Langstarth, Esk Hawes and back some way depending on the weather.

Event: Great Lakes

Running race (Great Lakes fell race ) 3:47:37 [3] 23.3 km (9:46 / km) +2100m 6:44 / km

Great Lakes run fell race. My first long fell race and my first English Championship race. Not great weather all day with continous rain and mist above 500 metres. Put myself towards the back of the pack so I didnt get caught up with the big guys infront and kill myself on the first climb. Set a good pace going up the band feeling strong keeping a smile on my face. No one else was smile which was a surprise. Had a good route onto Bowfell and again on to Esk Pike. Going on to Esk Pike I caught Toby which was a surprise and just after that I slipped and smashed my shin on a rock. It hurt for a few minutes but then it was fine. Then ran with Toby for most of the race. Coming into Esk Hause I seemed to be infront of a group of 30. Me and Toby the only ones with maps out which explained that I was infront. I lead the group up to Great End. Then most of the group went right and me, Toby and a few other kept straight and then we heard a Marshall calling and we went into the checkpoint. I turned to look around coming off the top seeing the rest of the group coming crashing across to the Checkpoint. The group caught and I went with them. Got onto Scafell Pike and felt strong still. Had one of my gels and some water. Stuggled on the rocky path of the top but then got going and then went left and found the BG grassy gully down to Foxes Tarn Gully. Toby Caught me at the top of the BG gully as I stopped to check my direction was right. Then up Foxes Tarn gully and we tried some Gill scrambling. Got to the top of Scafell with with Toby close behind. The route off Scafell was much rougher than I thought it was. Contoured to low which Toby realised so we climbed a little back up to Slight Side. Came off Slight side and ended up at the top of one of the gullies some people use to decend off Slight. It looked horrible and dangerous so I got back on top my planned route. Decended well down to Great Moss and crossed the River Esk with Toby. Then we made our way towards Swinsty Gill and I started to feel a little tired and empty so I got out my banana and started to munch. We crossed Lingcove Beck just before the accent of Swinsty Gill. Toby helped me cross the Beck because it was powerful. Then I got into a good pace going up Swinsty Gill. Toby slowly pulled away and I got the map out and the jelly babies. Felt like a long time until I got to main Path coming off Crinkle Crags. Decended well on the side of the path and got to Red tarn feeling ok. Just going up Pike of Blisco I turned to look behind me and saw Toby (apparently we must of crossed in the mist and he ended up to far right at the top of the Gill) Got to the top of Blisco at the same time and then just coming off the top we were climbing down this rock step and my right quad cramped up. I said to to Toby I would see him at the bottom. Stretched for a few minutes and then made my way slowly down. Got on to the main grassy spur coming down and bum slided most of the way down. Got to the bottom and someone advised me to go up river to the bridge and I did because I didnt fancy crossing the river on my own (I would of ended up in Ambleside). Got to the Bridge and all the people coming down off Blisco were heading for the Bridge. Pushed hard from the Bridge. Finshed strongly. Pleased with my time and really enjoyed it.

Splits for the race:

Running 2:32:00 [4] 17.0 km (8:56 / km) +968m 6:58 / km

Fell run to recce some of the Great Lakes run route. Parked just above Eskdale YHA. Then headed up to Slight Side. Got to the top in hour. Then dropped down around Horn Crag, then down to Great Moss, over to the top of Mosedale and then contoured up to Stonesty Gill, headed up to about half way. Then the mist came in and I decided to turn around. Went back the same way and then down the River Esk. Good run out, felt good. Was eating and drinking well remembering eating something every hour and drinking alot. Ended up drinking two litres. Feeling up with really fresh water in the mountain streams.

Note

On the way back, went over HardKnott and Wrynose which was an experience in the little Corsa. Stopped in Langdale to have a look at the decent of Pike of Blisco. If I run in the race I will carry my O map of Pike of Blisco to find a good route down if the mist is down.
