orienteering race (SA MTBO Champs) 1:05:37 [2] 9.3 km (7:03 / km)

I was organiser for Wallaringa's MTBO champs at Three Chain Break/Chalks and Fern set some great courses, therefore wasn't using her bike today, so she kindly lent it to me and I did my first ever MTBO event (Kay would be so proud) in W open B!

Decided beforehand that I would get off and walk anything which spooked me - which meant walking the bike DOWN the very first hill (also the steepest on course) after spending about 5 min dithering over whether one track would be less steep than another. But apparently I wasn't the only one to walk down that hill.

Once I got to know Fern's bike (and trust it way more not to throw me, than I do my little hybrid), this was really kind of fun. Gears changed at the touch of a fingertip (I can hardly reach my own gears with outstretched fingers) and the bike was very responsive even if I couldn't see my front wheel because of a map board in the way.

It was such a nice day out, especially riding through avenues of pines, on soft needles, that I was almost sorry to finish. So I went control collecting later but that was by car and running in to a few sites, which gave me a chance to admire the wildflowers in the native section (around the start of the M21 course at WOC trials 2003) and to run off the cake from Wallaringa's communal morning tea.

The best bit is that I didn't get beaten by any W60s, who were on the same course :)
