orienteering race (Bendig-O-Ringen) 1:37:31 [3] 8.2 km (11:54 / km)
shoes: Inov8 Oroc spikes

This was a fun event thanks to Neil & Julie - 4 short courses on goldmining skraplands (bottersnike territory, but it wasn't too junky) on the northern outskirts of Bendigo, with the simple premise that the time taken to travel between the last control on one map and the first control on the next map was deleted from the splits, and all 4 course times added together for the final result.

My times for each map (including time to/from first/last control):
St Justs Point - 27 min (including about 3 at a standstill trying to fight my way through a thicket of brush when I knew exactly where I was meant to be one watercourse further over)
New Argus 24 min (poor route choice right over the big mullock heap, overshot one control)
South Star 24min (maybe I should have gone straight up the massive erosion instead of around)
New St Mungo 31 min (again got caught in green and also took some very wide route choices, plus didn't see the correct way from last control to finish through school).

I was generally slow & uncoordinated because of my knees, and still a bit flat from having a cold, but this was very enjoyable orienteering (the middle two maps when combined = Virginia Hill) and the sun was shining upon Bendigo, unlike in grey Melbourne. A pity that more people hadn't come up from Melbourne though. With serious promotion, the 5-races-in-two-days format could become a premier weekend on the OV calendar!
