orienteering (Flagstaff Hill) 1:06:00 [3] 5.4 km (12:13 / km)
shoes: Asics GT-2000

On my way out the door, wearing running shorts, I suddenly had the realisation that it wasn't going to be street-O but that the courses would go into the bushland near the flood control dam, and that much of this is prickly acacia - so I went back for full leg cover, which was a good idea, although some of the thick stuff turned out to be young wattles which aren't so prickly. Maybe a compass would have been a good idea too?

This event was promoted towards newcomers but I am hoping none of them did the longest course, because I'm not convinced that they would have enjoyed it. I did, in a masochistic sort of way - remembering some of the experiences which mum & Susanne & I first had when we started orienteering 30 years ago.

Came home and made orienteering-control biscuits to take to Nick's 18th :)

swimming 37:00 [3] 1.0 km (37:00 / km)

Gradually loosening up. Slept better last night, although the dog didn't. He keeps seeing cats in the back garden and his outrage at this invasion of privacy is highly audible.

running (Belair night) 1:04:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Kayano 21

I was the one who suggested that from Long Gully we go up Saddle Hill Rd, but I really struggled on the climb - legs have been really painful the last couple of days through groin/adductor/quads and even kept me awake last night. Singletrack down into the redwoods and back along the creek was pleasant, although it would seem that single-file didn't work for people who were minus a headlamp. Warm patches of air were common tonight, and made me think of rogaining.

running long 1:31:00 [3]
shoes: Asics GT-2000

Slow plod across to Brownhill Creek, up behind Carrick Hill and Waite, back through Mitcham. Pleasant rain-washed morning but adductors and groin were becoming progressively more horrible as tends to be the case with this combination of shoes and orthotics. Still, moving better than the dog, who claims to have done something to his shoulder.

running 33:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Kayano 21

Coach Bridget decided that we would do half-a dozen-200s each (the boys got nine) in a sort of 3-person relay, so the recovery was the time taken for the other 2 people to run theirs, and there was no excuse for not running mine as hard as I could, which is not saying much because I have no aerobic capacity. Good fun, plus a lap of the uni loop before & after.

swimming 36:00 [3] 1.0 km (36:00 / km)

Hip was ok after anti-inflammatories and foam rollering but both hips are very tight and maybe a massage tonight will hurt, I mean help.

Note

Left home at 7am to drop dog to Perry (G had gone to Melbourne overnight driving a road train full of fruit and veg) pick up parents and head for Belair to put out a few more controls then drive up with the maps to the top start where, since it had stopped raining, it was actually quite pleasant to spend a couple of hours watching people puffing their way up the hill (dad took a deckchair to sit at the trainline crossing warning people, but only one train came past in that time). Tyson's courses were well received, and numbers good although not outstanding, and afterwards numerous friends headed off to watch the soccer while I helped collect controls/pack up then dropped parents home and retrieved Meatloaf. It would have been a perfect afternoon for a ride but I was absolutely stuffed from doing nothing, and didn't think my hip would like it, so took a while even to make good on my promise to walk his dogship. By the time I had done that, though, the results were up already - good work Tyson!
