running race (Sturt Gorge trail run) 2:20:33 [3] 19.5 km (7:12 / km) +471m 6:26 / km
(sick) shoes: Asics Kayano 23

Slightly tempted to stay home in bed but I'd arranged to pick Zara up, and this sounded like an interesting run with no nasty surprises, as long as the river wasn't too deep. Maybe 5 degrees at the start @Blackwood footy clubrooms, and a lot of people were wearing thermals, but I figured I'd be ok for a couple of hours - and in fact it didn't rain at all.

Fairly obviously, this is a run which is downhill from the start and I didn't feel too bad, although took it pretty easy on the singletrack (which was basically the whole course). Probably shouldn't have worn my oldest shoes with the tread falling off, but didn't think that newer ones would have any better grip under the conditions. And I remained upright throughout...got a bit frustrated at the people in front of me pussyfooting every river crossing as though they were doing the Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy!

A bit disappointed how many people passed me every time there was any uphill in the first half; guess this was a combination of lack of fitness, lack of traction and this week's cold. Didn't really matter though because I was out to enjoy myself rather than overcooking it. Perhaps I should have tried a bit harder, because I ended up 25 min behind Zara - mind you, she was 3rd woman :)

riding (Brownhill Creek) 1:08:00 [3] 19.5 km (3:29 / km)
(sick)

Rather coldy the past couple of days (not sure who breathed on me @work but there are many potential culprits at this time of year) but it was good to get some fresh air and although the raincoat caused wind resistance it also caused lack of precipitation during that time. Followed by AOTKM which will have hopefully loosened up my ankle that's been bad since NZ (stiffness hopefully won't be exacerbated by a 20km trail run tomorrow).

Tyson had put a lot of effort into setting this event for Wallaringa, with vetting assistance from AK, and it was a day when the sun finally came out, so very pleasant all round, even if my hamstring was a bit unhappy (I kept misjudging the distance to jump into and across creeks yesterday because of wearing glasses; the reason I previously gave up on doing so was that I couldn't judge where I was putting my feet). Partway through the course I could see Martin Steer in front of me, so I tried a bit harder, but didn't manage to run him down until right near the end.

Controls were all in and the event packed up by 1pm!
